Abstract

A water wheel with radial blades B rotates around a horizontal axis S. The blades seal against a curved bed section C. The wheel is driven (i.e. works in reverse) and pumps water, raising it by a vertical distance H. The wheel lifts water with high efficiency over low head differences, e.g. for algae ponds or irrigation schemes. The blades of the wheel can be radial, inclined or curved.

Description

Hydrostatic Pressure Pumping Wheel (HPW)
Background
This invention relates to a horizontal axis water wheel with radial blades running in a curved bed section where the wheel is driven by a machine or motor and is used to lift water upwards in the direction of its rotation.
Pumping large volumes of water over a small height difference of 2m or less is required in some technical applications such as algae ponds with gravity flow. Standard pumps are not designed for such a purpose.
Statement of invention
The recently developed Hydrostatic Pressure Wheel, a hydropower converter for very low head differences, can be utilised working in reverse as a pump. This Hydrostatic Pressure Pumping Wheel (HPPW) can lift large volumes of up to 5 m3/s and meter width by height differences between 0.3 to 1 m. The HPPW is a horizontal axis water wheel with radial blades, running in a curved bed section of one blade distance length. Its axis is driven by a motor to rotate the bottom blades in the direction of pumping.
Advantages The HPPW has the advantage of having high efficiencies combined with being a very simple machine.
The machine consists of the curved bed section, wheel with radial blades and spokes, axis with power train and drive motor. It is specifically developed for pumping water over very low head differences. It will provide a cost-effective means to lift water e.g. in algae ponds or in drainage or irrigation schemes.
Example
An example of the invention will now be described referring to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows the wheel from the side with the direction of pumping from right to left.
The water arrives from the right with a velocity v2 and a depth d2. The blades B' rotate over the shaft 5' with a tangential velocity vt. At the bed, a curved section C' with the length of one blade tip distance raises the bed level and closes the wheel blade against the downstream. The movement of the blades capture the water and lift it up by a distance H'. The water exits the wheel at a higher elevation d1 with a velocity v1.

Claims (4)

  1. Claims 1. A wheel with radial blades rotating over a horizontal axis driven by an electric motor to lift water vertically upwards.
  2. 2. The blades can be radial or with a positive or negative angle with the radius or with a curvature.
  3. 3. The wheel has 10 to 40 blades.
  4. 4. A curvature at the bottom which seals the blades and which raises the bed level by a certain distance.
