Abstract

A security device which allows a vehicle owner to 'cap' and secure the diagnostic port to make it very difficult for car thieves to gain access to the vehicles computer system. By sealing off the diagnostic port with a lockable device, unauthorised access is restricted. The security device also has the ability to fragment if tampered with and leave parts of itself embedded in the diagnostic port to reduce the chances of theft due to the effort required to remove these fragments. The device locks into the vehicle diagnostic port, If an attempt is made to forcibly remove the device, it may cause damage to the port which would hinder any unauthorised attempt at access to the computer system. The vehicle would still be usable and the diagnostic port could be repaired at a later date.

Description

Description
Vehicle Diagnostic Port Security Device This invention relates to a device for easily and quickly securing a vehicle diagnostic port' from unauthorised access. The vehicle diagnostic port' is present to enable authorised vehicle technicians to access the on-board computer.
With so many vehicles now having keyless' systems it has become easier for car thieves to steal vehicles by connecting specialist diagnostic tools to the vehicle diagnostic port to override the vehicle security system.
This simple invention allows the vehicle owner to cap' the diagnostic port to make it very difficult for car thieves to gain access to the vehicles computer system. By sealing off the diagnostic port with a lockable device, unauthorised access is restricted. If the security device also has the ability to fragment if tampered with and leave parts of itself embedded in the diagnostic port, it will reduce the chances of theft due to the effort required to remove these fragments.
The key to unlock the Vehicle Diagnostic Port Security Device can be hidden by the owner or kept on a key ring.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows an example female' vehicle diagnostic port as standard on some vehicles Figure 2 shows a side elevation cut away of a male' Vehicle Diagnostic Port Security Device which plugs into the female' diagnostic port.
Figure 3 shows the jagged pins of the Vehicle Diagnostic Port Security Device which engage the female' vehicle diagnostic port.
Figure 4 shows the rear view of the Vehicle Diagnostic Port Security Device where a key locking mechanism is accessible.
FigureS shows how the locking mechanism of the Vehicle Diagnostic Port Security Device will rotate the jagged pins to engage into the female' vehicle diagnostic port.
Description
In Figure 1, an example female' vehicle diagnostic port is shown. This diagnostic port is usually found inside the vehicle in the floor area or on the underside of the dashboard. It may also be found in the engine compartment in some vehicles.
It is usually located where it can be easily accessed by vehicle technicians. The diagnostic port can be differing shapes and sizes.
In Figure 2, the Vehicle Diagnostic Port Security Device is shown in sectional view with the locking mechanism (1) and the teeth engaging mechanism (2). When the key is turned to lock the device, the teeth engage into the on-board diagnostic port.
In Figure 3,the Vehicle Diagnostic Port Security Device is shown with the jagged pins engaging mechanism (1) and the Vehicle Diagnostic Port Security Device body which engages the on-board diagnostic port.
Figure 4 shows the possible key lock mounting (1).
Figure 5 shows a method of the way in which the jagged pins can be rotated to engage the on-board diagnostic port, when a key is turned. When the key is turned, a spindle rotates (1) causing the threaded bar (2) to move. This in turn causes the jagged pins (3) to rotate and engage with the on-board diagnostic port.
