Abstract

Silhouette (TM) face-lift sutures are reinforced using one or more small pieces of absorbable surgical thread 1 which each contain an upper hole 2 and a lower hole 3. Each thread is threaded onto the suture, located between two cones of the suture and its lower end is fixed to a knot of the suture whilst the upper end remains free to slide so that when the suture is pulled a cone pushes down the movable end to form a knot which grasps the tissue. The thread may be a pear-shaped piece of tape (figure 4). Multiple threads may be applied to a single suture (figures 8, 9, 12 & 14). Also disclosed are various needles for inserting the sutures (figures 10, 11 and 13).

Description

Reinforcing mean for Silhouette face lift sutures This invention relates to a mean of reinforcing the Silhouette face lift sutures.
One of the available face lift surgical sutures is the Silhouette face lift sutures with the trade mark, Silhouette Lift and Silhouette Soft.
My UK patented modifications of these sutures are, Modified Silhouette face lift sutures and Super Silhouette face lift sutures.
I have noticed that the lifting force of these sutures, which is done by the effect of the cones on the sutures, is quite limited. The suture may be dislodged easily out of the tissues by simple traction in many occasions. This invention provides a mean to reinforce the lifting force of the sutures. A small movable piece of thread is applied between the cones to produce an additional big knot when the suture is tightened after insertion to reinforce tissue engagement of the cones. The piece is made of synthetic absorbable material like polylactic acid and p0 lyd i oxa none.
The small piece of thread can be replaced by a flat pear shaped piece which is made of the same materials which are mentioned above.
The length of the small suture piece is equal to the distance between two knots of the suture. Its size is equal to the size of the face lift suture
for example 3-0.
The length of the flat pear shaped piece is equal to the distance between two knot of the face lift suture. Its largest width is less than the large diameter of the cone.
Mode of action; The piece has a fine hole on each end. It is threaded on the face lift suture through these holes. One end is fixed to a knot of the face lift suture and the other end is movable. On pulling of the face lift suture, after being inserted, the cone pushes the movable end of the piece downward toward the fixed end of the piece forming a large knot.
This knot grasps the tissues helping in suture fixation in addition to its effect as a large knot. It dissolves in due course, like the cones, and reacts with the tissues forming a better fixation of the face lift suture to the tissues.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a small piece of absorbable surgical thread, having a fine hole on each end, Figure 2 shows the small piece of thread is applied to a face lift suture, Figure 3 shows the small piece of thread in action, making a large knot, Figure 4 shows an anterior view of a flat pear shaped small piece of absorbable suture material, Figure 5 shows a lateral view of the pear shaped piece, Figure 6 shows the pear shaped piece, is applied to the face lift suture, Figure 7 shows the pear shaped piece in action, making a large knot, Figure 8 shows the small piece of surgical thread is applied to the Silhouette Soft suture, Figure 9 shows the small piece of thread is applied to the Silhouette Lift suture, Figure 10 shows the Modified Silhouette Lift needle, version one, Figure 11 shows the Modified Silhouette Lift needle, version two, Figure 12 shows the small piece of surgical thread is applied to the Modified Silhouette face lift suture, Figure 13 shows the Super Silhouette face lift needle, Figure 14 shows the small piece of surgical thread is applied to the Super Silhouette face lift suture.
In figure 1, a small piece of absorbable surgical thread 1 includes an upper movable hole 2 and a lower fixed hole 3.
Figure 2 shows the small piece of thread 1. Its lower end 3 is tied to a knot 5 of a surgical face lift suture 4. Its upper movable hole 2 slides on the suture 4. A cone 6 is situated between the upper hole 2 and a knot 7 of the face lift suture 4.
Figure 3 shows the small piece of thread un action. The face lift suture 4 is pulled up. The cone 6 pushes the upper hole 2 downward making a large knot.
Figure 4 shows an anterior view of a flat pear shaped absorbable piece 8, having an upper hole 9 and a lower hole 10.
Figure 5 shows a lateral view of the pear shaped piece 8.
Figure 6 shows the pear shaped piece 8 is applied on the face lift suture 4. Its lower hole 10 is tied to the knot 3 while upper movable hole 9 slides over the face lift suture 4.
Figure 7 shows the pear shaped piece 8 in action. The cone 6 pushes it downward on pulling the face lift suture 4, making a large knot.
Figure 8 shows the small piece of thread 1 is applied to the Silhouette Soft suture 13. Its long needles 11 and 12 are situated at its ends.
Figure 9 shows the small piece of thread 1 is applied over the Silhouette Lift suture 15 which has the long needle 14.
Figure 10 shows the Modified Silhouette Lift needle with its oblique slit 17 at its lower end 16, and the cleft 18 at its upper end.
Figure 11 shows the Modified Silhouette Lift needle with its apical slit 19 at its lower end, and cleft 18 at its upper end.
Figure 12 shows the small piece of thread 1 is applied on the Silhouette Lift suture 20. The free knot 21 of the suture 20 has been shown.
Figure 13 shows the Silhouette Soft needle with its blunt lower end 22 and its freely opened upper end 25. It has the oval window 23, the slit 24 at the upper edge of the oval window and the cleft 26 at the upper end 25.
Figure 14 shows the small piece of thread 1 is applied on the Silhouette Soft face lift suture 27. the free knot 28 has been shown.
