Abstract
A hatch assembly located in use over ducting. The assembly comprises a main cover 4 and a frame 6. The frame has, located around its periphery, a smoke and gas seal 9 and a layer of intumescent material 8 is located on the cover. The frame may incorporate a slot 14 in which a flange 16 on one edge of the cover is located. At least one side of the cover may be provided with a layer of fire proof material.
Description
Hatch assembly
Field of invention
The present invention relates to a hatch assembly. More especially the invention relates to an inspection hatch located over a boiler flue or duct that can be removed to access and inspect the flue or duct behind.
Background to the invention
The majority of homes in the UK are built with boiler flues hidden behind walls or ceilings that cannot be easily be accessed for inspection.
New gas safety regulations will require the entire length of the gas flues from boilers to be visible during annual gas safety checks. If the boiler fails to work then carbon monoxide may be released which travels through the flues. Consequently boiler flues will soon need to be inspected to ensure that all joints are fixings are secure and undamaged.
The present invention seeks to provide an inspection hatch for a boiler flue suitable for use over gas flues or similar ducting that allows inspection of the flue or ducting but provides the necessary sealing and fire protection when shut.
Statement of invention
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a hatch assembly located in use over ducting allowing access to the ducting when required, the hatch assembly comprising a main oover and a frame having located around its periphery a smoke and gas seal and a layer of intumescent material.
Preferably the frame includes a recessed slot along at least one side thereof. Preferably the cover inoludes an outwardly projeoting flange which in use, is boated within the slot.
Preferably at least one side of the oover is provided with a layer of fire proof material.
Brief description of the drawings
One embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the aocompanying figures in which Figure 1 illustrates a hatch assembly constructed in accordance with the invention, with the hatch cover separated from the frame; Figure 2 illustrates the hatch assembly of figure 1 closed; Figure 3 illustrates the hatch assembly of figures 1 and 2 closed viewed from inside; and Figure 4 illustrates the locking mechanism of the hatch assembly for figures 1 to 3.
Detailed description of preferred embodiments
Referring to figure 1, a hatch assembly 2 constructed in accordance with the invention comprises a cover or door 4 detachable attached to a frame 6 constructed within a wall of a building adjacent a boiler flue or other ducting that may require inspection.
The cover 4 and frame 6 are shown as being generally square but can be clearly of any suitable shape.
The cover 4 has a layer of fire protection material 8 on its inside surface.
The frame 6 has a smoke and gas seal 8 extending around its entire periphery which prevents smoke or gas expelled from the boiler and travelling through the flue from entering the building through the hatch assembly 2.
As can be seen in figure 3, a layer of intumescent material 10 is provided around the frame periphery on its inside. The intumescent material 10 expands when heated closing all gaps and preventing any flames and heat from being released into the building through The hatch 2.
The cover 4 of the hatch 2 engages with the frame 6 via a simple locking mechanism 12 (see figure 4) . The locking mechanism 12 allows the cover to be released and opened by simply pressing the cover4 towards the frame 6.
One side of the frame 6 includes a recessed slot 14 and one side of the cover 4 has a perpendicularly projecting flange 16. In use, when the cover 4 is shut against the frame 6 the flange 16 of the cover 4 is located within the slot 14 of the frame 6.
The cover 4 oan be entirely removed from the frame 6 to allow the entire flue behind to be accessed for inspection. The cover 4 is removed by simply lifting the door flange 16 from the slot 14 and removing the cover from the frame 6.
Onoe inspection has been completed the oover 4 is attaohed baok onto the frame 6 by dropping the flange 14 baok into the slot 16 arid closing the oover 4 against the frame 6.
It is envisages that simple attachment and removal of the oover can be carried out through other commonly used methods.
The hatch 2 can be fitted to walls and ceilings either horizontally or vertically.
It will be understood, that the various embodiments described herein have been described by way of example only and that modifications may be made thereto without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined in the accompanying claims.
