Abstract

An audio headset cable adapter enables the connection of a single headset to multiple electronic devices. The adapter may have a male Nexus connector 7, a female Nexus connector 8, and a further common audio connector such as a male or female 3.5 mm connector 9. The connectors may be connected by cable 5 or enclosed in a common housing (17, Fig 4).

Description

I
Audio headset cable adapter This invention relates to a cable adapter that allows a headset with a male Nexus series connector such as a TP-120, TP-120-5, TP-120-7, or similar sized type jacks with multiple poles to be compatible with more than one electronic audio device.
When using a single headset consisting of a microphone and speakers with a Nexus series connector jack, it is only possible to connect one audio device to the headset such as a communications radio. This limits the headset and therefore the user to be only connected to one electronic device.
To overcome this, the invention utilises an audio headset cable adapter that incorporates a male or female 3.5 mm four pole audio connector with a male or female Nexus connector.
The female Nexus series connector such as TJ-120, TJ-102, Ti-Wi, or similar sized component is used to mate with the male Nexus series connector. The use of a 3.5mm connector is proposed with this invention as it is one of the most common types of universal audio connector used in the open market with electronic devices such as personal media players and mobile phones. Furthermore, a four pole connector would allow the headset to be fully functional in delivering stereo sound with both audio transmitted to the headset and microphone audio to be received by the electronic device. Various other connector types can be considered in place of the 3.5 mm connector in order to make the Nexus series connector compatible with specific electronic devices such as a 2.5 mm connector, a 6.5 mm connector, RCA connectors or other audio jacks. Also, dependant on the intended use of the cable adapter, the number of poles or contact points on any of the connectors can be more or less than four in order to achieve mono sound or negate the microphone function of the headset.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows the common use of the said audio headset cable adapter.
Figure 2 shows the audio headset cable adapter with a male Nexus connector, a female Nexus connector and a female 3.5 mm connector.
Figure 3 shows the audio headset cable adapter with a male Nexus connector, a female Nexus connector and other common audio connectors.
Figure 4 shows a variation of the audio headset cable adapter shown in figure 2, with all the connectors contained within a housing.
Figure 1 shows the common use of the audio headset cable adapter 3, placed between the user 1 wearing a headset 2 and the main electronic device 4. Any amount of additional electronic devices 6 can be connected to the headset through the cable adapter 3.
In figure 2, the audio headset cable adapter consists of three component parts. A male Nexus connector with four contact poles] wired to a female Nexus connector with four contact poles 8 and a female 3.5 mm connector with four contact poles 9. These components wired together using a cables of any desired length that is insulated by plastic or rubber to minimize interference between the individual wires or external environment.
The amount of wires contained within the cable may vary dependant on the type of connector desired and the number of poles or contact points. The wire type used in the cable can be any appropriate audio wire either fibre or metal that are electrically connected by solder wire connections at the component poles to achieve a desired signal strength dependant on the intended use of the cable adapter. The components are insulted by a plastic or rubber chassis 18 shaped ergonomically and appropriately for its intended use and to achieve no external interference.
Figure 3 shows the audio headset cable adapter as stated for figure 1, however depicts an alternative embodiment in which other common audio connecters are used in place of a female 3.5 mm connector 9. Common audio connectors such as a female 2.5 mm connector 10, a female 6.5 mm connector 11, a male 2.5 mm connector 12, a male 3.5 mm connector 13, a male 6.5 mm connector 14, a pair of male RCA connectors 15, a pair of female RCA connectors 16.
Figure 4 shows a further alternative embodiment of the headset cable adapter in which all connections of the components are contained within a housing 17. The housing is insulted by a plastic or rubber chassis shaped ergonomically and appropriately for its intended use and to achieve no external interference. A variation can include the male Nexus connector] being wired at any distance from the housing using a cable 5.
