Description

SYSTEM AND TOOL FOR MONITORING SUBSEA ASSEMBLIES.
Introduction
S This invention relates to the monitoring of subsea assemblies, and particularly the status of devices within such an assembly, which comprises a subsea wellhead and normally includes when fully assembled a production tree or Christmas tree', a blowout preventer (BOP) and a marine riser.
Such an assembly contains a multiplicity of different devices and components of which the status, i.e. operating condition or position, is relevant to the correct and safe operation of the assembly. Such devices and components may include sleeves, mandrels, rings, pistons, valves, collets and suchlike.
Such an assembly is commonly used with a tool which can be inserted) into a central bore of the assembly. Such a tool may be a running tool which is customarily used to insert or control various components of the assembly.
It is frequently important, sometimes essential, to monitor the position, either relative to other components or absolute of components within the assembly or stack' or relative to the tool because mispositioning may in many different ways cause serious even catastrophic failures. The monitoring of status may include the measurement of pressure within chambers of the tool or elsewhere in the assembly.
The invention particularly concerns a system and a tool for the monitoring of indications of position, relative position, pressure or other attributes of status of various parts of the assembly and/or the running tool and for the transmission of data representing those indications to a remote location
Summary of the claimed invention
In one aspect the invention provides a tool for insertion into a subsea assembly, including means for monitoring a position or operational state of the tool or a part thereof relative to the assembly or a part thereof, and/or the status of a part or component of the tool and/or the assembly, a source of electrical power independent of external supply, and a transmitter for wireless transmission of data from the monitoring means to a remote location.
The assembly may comprise a wellhead and the tool may include sensors of the position or status of the tool or part thereof and the wellhead or a part cooperating with the said part of the tool.
The assembly may comprise a production tree and the tool may include sensors of the position or status of the tool or part thereof and the tree or a part cooperating with the said part of the tool.
The assembly may comprise a blowout preventer and the tool may include sensors of the position or status of the tool or part thereof and the blowout preventer or a part cooperating with the said part of the tool.
In another aspect the invention provides a method of operating a tool for insertion into a subsea assembly including a wellhead and/or a production tree and/or a blowout preventer, comprising monitoring a position or operational state of the tool or a part thereof relative to the assembly or a part thereof, and/or the status of a part or component of the tool and/or the assembly, electrically powering the tool from a source carried on the tool and independent of external supply, and wirelessly transmitting data from the monitoring to a remote location.
The method may include monitoring the status of a part or region of the wellhead and/or the production tree and/or the blowout preventer and transmitting an indication of that status to the tool for onward transmission to the remote location.
The invention also provides a subsea assembly including a wellhead and/or a production tree and/or a blowout preventer, comprising means for monitoring a position or operational state at least one part of the assembly, and at least one transmitter for wirelessly transmitting data from the monitoring means to a running tool.
Brief Description of the Drawings
Figure 1 is a sectional schematic view of a running tool and a subsea assembly.
Figure 2 is a sectional schematic view of another version of a running tool and a subsea assembly.
Detailed Description
Figure 1 illustrates schematically a tool, in this example a running tool, and a subsea assembly with which the tool co-operates. This assembly 1 comprises a subsea wellhead 2 above which is disposed a BOP 3 from which a marine riser extends upwardly, The tool 4 is run into the common central aperture or bore 5 of the assembly, usually by means of a line extending to the surface.
Within the wellhead 2 are various parts, exemplified in Figure 2 by sleeves 5 but which may comprises many different components of which the absolute or relative status may be indicated by various sensors. The tool 4 also carries sensors 6 and/or transmitter and receivers which can determine the relative positions of parts such as sleeves, rings, mandrels pistons and collets on the tool with respective parts of the wellhead or components therein. These sensors and/or transmitter and receivers may cooperate with sensors and/or transmitters and receivers 7 on the well head. They may employ electronic, optical or radio methods' of measurement and/or monitoring and or transmission of data to or from the running tool. The particular method will largely depend on the nature of the parts or devices which are monitored. There may be sensors associated with data transmitters and receivers to enable the tool to recover status information on the condition (such a pressure) within parts of the wellhead.
Likewise there may be a transceiver (transmitter and receiver) on the BOP 3 for co=operation with the tool so that the position of the tool relative to the BOP can be monitored.
The sensors on the welihead or other parts of the assembly may be passive or may include transmitters which are preferably powered from a local charge storage device such as a battery.
The tool includes a transmitter together with appropriate processing circuits and devices so that data obtained by the co-operation of the tool and the wellhead and/or the BOP can be transmitted by wireless link to a remote location. The tool may also wirelessly receive data from the remote location.
The tool very preferably includes a charge storage device such as a battery pack 7 for providing locally power to sensor, processing circuits any control unit, transmitters and receivers on the tool.
The main object therefore is to provide a tool which can be used or run without requiring any power supply cable, to obtain accurate indications of relative positions of the tool or a specific part thereof and the assembly or specific part thereof, or indications of status of parts or devices within the wellhead and/or other parts of the subsea assembly and to transmit corresponding data to the surface or other remote location by wireless link, In particular the operation or position of the tool can be monitored and transmitted wirelessly without reliance on such operations as overpulls, measurement of fluid volumes of measurement of drill floor position.
Figure 2 illustrates schematically an assembly similar to that shown and described above with reference to Figure 1. However, Figure 2 includes an Xmas tree 9 including a sleeve 10 (which might be an isolation sleeve), and various sensors, transmitters and receivers, generally denoted by the reference 11, which may cooperate with respective parts or sensors on the tool. Thus the position and/or operation of the tool relative to the tree or the status of devices or parts within the tree maybe monitored as describe above.
The assembly may include a marine riser extending upwardly and the riser may have sensors and/or a transmitter and receiver for cooperation with the running tool.
