Abstract

The kit comprises a first type of block 102 with a hermaphrodite joint, i.e. dual male and female or both protruding and recessed connections, at least on one end of the block. In use the male part of one block is placed into the female part of another block. The kit also comprises second and third type blocks, which are typically half the height of the first type, and comprise only one of the male or female connections. The kit may also comprise blocks which have a plan view cross, crucifix or T shaped to allow walls to be built at right angles to the original wall. The block may be made from the following types of material: concrete; plastic; insulating; refractory; transparent or hollow. The block may be used in construction or as a toy

Description

Interlocking Blocks
Background
Plain rectangular blocks have been used for many years to lbrm the walls of buildings, being bedded in the fonn of courses, the blocks being staggered above each other to prevent weak vertical mortar areas from fracturing. There is a degree of skill required of the bricklayer in achieving level and consistent layers of mortar and block or brick spacing and of building a verti-cal straight wall. The mortar has to be mixed and used within a certain time and work has to be paused after a number of courses of brick or blockwork to allow the mortar to harden. At this stage the mortar joints on the outside of a wall have to be pointed and mortar on the inside of the wall has to be removed.
The interlocking blocks according to the invention reduce or eliminate the need for mortar or any other fixing method thus achieving saving of time and money In the building thdustry The invention also has advantages when applied to construction toys or model making where the con-struction process is less messy and models can be dismantled and the blocks re-used.
Description
A typical full height block according to the invention will have hermaphrodite joints at both ends consisting of male and female parts placed one above the othet The blocks preferably join by lowering one block into the top half of the joint of another block. Other types of block are used, of less height (typically half height), containing just one part ofthejoint. In order to build a straight wall you would need a level foundation. The first course of blocks would then be made up of alternate full height blocks and part height blocks. Successive courses would be construct-ed using full height blocks until the top course where alternate blocks of a part height would be required to obtain a level top to the wall.
The action of vertically lowering blocks into position enables several parts of each course of a wall to be worked on at the same time. The ends of the wall could notch into posts having rebates or steclwork or single joint-ended blocks or corner blocks could be used. Where an aperture or doororwindowframeistobeinsertedblocksmaybeusedwithstandardjointsinoneendto suit the adjoining blocks and suitable fixing means at the other end. Where a wall needs a buttress, blocks can be used having joints in their side as well as in the end. Alternatively, some blocks may be made to a different thickness or material to give improved strength and stability char-acteristics to the wall. Blocks in a wall may have surface decoration or finish according to the properties required of the wall. Blocks may be hollow or have channels such as to enable elec-tricity; gas and water carrying services to be installed within the wall. The blocks may be filled with insulating material, reinforcement or concrete etc to improve the strength of a building.
Particular blocks, as at corners or intersections, could have specific reinforcement or vertical clamping or fastening to the foundation. Blocks could be designed for cavity wall construction having joints at the ends of each of the inner and outer leaves.
Whilst the blocks have many uses in vertical constructions in which they are retained by the weight of each block acting downwards, horizontal constructions such as floors, roads and drives would also share the advantages over the use of other designs.
Detailed Description
Figure I shows a block 1 of the first type with a heraphrodite joint having a tapered recess 2 and a tapered tenon 3. The dimensions of the tenon 3 are such that it may engage with the dimen- sions of the recess 2 with a desired interference, sliding or loose fit Figure 2 shows an assem-bly of the first type of block lb with the first type of block Ia. The tenon 2a of the block Ia is engaged with the recess 3b of the block lb. Further blocks of the first type may be assembled to the unoccupied recess 2b or to the unoccupied tenon 3a of the block la. It is not shown but block of half the height (typical) of the first type of block having only the recess could be fitted to the tenon 3a in order to occupy the space between the ground and the base of the block Ib, similarly a type of block having only the tenon part of the joint could be fitted into the recess 2b in order to provide a level top to an assembly. It can be further envisaged that a number of longer double-ended blocks could be assembled together to form a wall structure. In figure 3 a full height block 1 is shown which has hermaphrodite joints 2 and 3 at each of its ends. A dotted line shows where the full height block could be cut to demonstrate the formations on half-height blocks. The holes 6 would allow a fixing to lock a tenon 3 into the recess 2 after assembly, by means of a pin, screw or bolt etc.The end view shows as optional recess 4 in the upper face of the block 1 and this accepts a formation 5 when blocks are assembled above each other, in order to prevent water from ingressing from the outside of a wall to its inside. Figure 4a shows various different shapcs of recesses and tcnons that may bc more appropriate or economical to manufac-ture, recess 7 is part of a circular section to correspond to tenon 8. However, the shape 9 may be easier to manufacture and may have advantages in tolerance. The tenon shape 9 need only fit in the recess 7 at the diameter part of the recess. Figure 4b shows a full height double ended block 1 having a full cylindrical recess 2 and a circular section pillar 3. Such a design could be accom-plished using a dowel glued into a hole with the same centreline as the cylindrical recess 2.
The figure 4c illustrates blocks constructed into walls. Block 100 is part of a wall constructed with full height and half height blocks having tenons and recesses siniilar to those in figure 3. The fig-ure 4d shows a wall constructed using the full height blocks 102 of figure 4b, these leave spaces 101 and 103 in the top and bottom courses. The space 101 does not contain any interlocking fea-ture and would need to be secured. The figure 4e shows a half height block 106 containing holes which fills a bottom course space and the top full height blocks are replaced by a course of special blocks 105 that are twice the length of the standard full height blocks 1 in order to achieve a level top to the wall. The blocks 105 may have plain tops or they may have joint parts 104 suitable for adding parts at right angles to the wall.
Figure 5 shows three views of a block 10 that may be used in forming a corner at the end of a straight wall. The top view shows recesses 11, the bottom view shows tenons 12. In figure 6 a full height block 13 is shown that has three hemaphrodite joints 14, 15 and 16 to enable a wall to adjoin a straight wall at right angles. Figure 7 is a full height block 17 having four joints 18, 19, 20 and 21.
An alternative means for joining two walls at a corner is shown in figures 8 and 9, showing a half height block with two recesses in figure 8 and a half height block with tenons in figure 9. A full height version would combine the two half height blocks.
Individual components shown in the drawings are not limited to use in their drawings and they may be used in other drawings and in all aspects of the invention.
