Abstract

250,172. Schwab, J. April 3, 1925. [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Regenerators. - Regenerative air heaters in which the heating elements move alternately through the gas space and the air space are constructed so that the openings in the partition between the gas and air spaces are always filled by the heating elements. Fig. 1 shows plateheating elements 10 of plain or corrugated sheet steel connected in pairs to endless chains 14 oscillated from a driving shaft 15 so that the elements 10 are reciprocated vertically through slots in a partition 11 which separates the gas space 12 from the air space 13. The edges of the slots may carry flexible wire ropes with wire pieces inserted therein acting as brushes, or the partition 11 may comprise a number of strips carrying brushes. Fig. 4 shows endless flexible bands 20 of wire gauze passing around driven shafts 25, 26 and through slots in the partition 21 provided with brushes. A further modification, Fig. 5, comprises plane or corrugated discs 30 mounted on a shaft 35 and rotated continuously in the gas and air spaces 31, 33 separated by stationary strips 31 carrying brushes 40, Fig. 8, arranged between the discs and loosely embracing the shaft 35, the ends of the strips 31 being supported by the wall of the heater. Soot brushed off the heating elements is removed through soot flaps 17, 37; this soot acts as a sealing means between the heating elements and the brushes or the edges of the slots in the partition. A simplified construction is described in which the heat-transmitting elements are rigidly fixed to the partition, the transfer being by conduction.
