Buttonhole sewing-machines. -In group-stitching machines such as buttonhole sewing- machines having a feed-wheel driven through a train of gears including a star-wheel, the lateral vibration of the needle is effected by a connection with the feed-wheel drive and hence through the star-wheel gearing. The machine illustrated is in part of known construction and in part as described in Specification 250,113. The needle-bar 5 is mounted in a swinging gate 7 which is connected by a link 10 to a slotted arm 11 connected by a link 13 to a crank-pin 14 mounted on a radially-movable slide 15 carried by a guide-head 16 on a hollow shaft 17. The guidehead 16 receives semi-rotational impulses through a train of gears 18 from an intermediate feedactuating shaft 19 on which is a star-wheel 20 with which mesh pins 21 carried by the hub of a bevel-pinion 22 driven by a bevel-pinion 24 from the sewing-shaft 9. A pin 27 within the shaft 17 has a coned head 28 which engages the slide 15 to adjust its position and the throw of the needle. The rod 27 is moved periodically to increase the vibrations of the needle for barring the ends of a buttonhole by a lever 33 engaging a stud 31 on the rod and actuated by blocks 39 on a cam-wheel 36 fixed on the shaft 37 which carries the main feed-wheel 38 which shifts the work-holder. The stitch-forming devices, worksupport and clamping devices are of known construction. A stop-motion of known type and a control shaft 68, driven in known manner from a pulley through a disc having spaced radially slidable clutch-dogs 71, are employed in the machine illustrated.
