Abstract

Divider 10 comprising an opaque member which is attachable to a mobile computing apparatus such that a first portion of a screen is on a first side and a second portion of the screen is on a second side for use with a multi-player game. Thus, a user on one side of the mobile computing apparatus cannot view a portion on the opposing side. The divider 10 may include a planar opaque member 11 and may also include a roof 13 and sidewalls 15, 16 increasing the range of angles a user on one side cannot see the opposing side of the device. The divider 10 may also include a cross-shaped opaque member that splits the screen into quadrants. The divider 10 may attach to any form of mobile computing apparatus such as smartphone or tablet and may attach by clips 17 or suction cups. The divider 10 allows using a single screen to display multi-user's secret information at the same time.

Description

A DEVICE FOR IMPROVING MULTI-PLAYER APPLICATIONS ON A MOBILE
COMPUTING APPARATUS
This invention relates to a device for improving multi-player applications on a mobile computing apparatus, such as an iPhone ® or iPad ®.
Some mobile computing applications, such as gaming applications, involve a scenario where one user's information should not be shared with another user. For example, in the popular game known as Battleships', a first user does not want a second user to know the location of their fleet of ships. This presents a problem when multiple users are using the same mobile computing apparatus, as the developers must implement a turn-by-turn structure to the application to ensure that no information is shared between users.
This can result in extra steps which take time for the developer to implement, and slow down the pace of the application. It is therefore desirable to alleviate the above problem.
According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a device, for dividing a screen of a mobile computing apparatus, the device comprising an opaque divider; and attachment means for attaching the opaque divider to the mobile computing apparatus, wherein the opaque divider is attachable to the mobile computing apparatus such that a first portion of the screen is on a first side of the opaque divider and a second portion of the screen is on a second side of the opaque divider.
The divider is attachable to the mobile computing apparatus' screen in such a way that a first portion of the screen is on one side of the divider and a second portion of the screen is on a second side of the divider. Therefore, as the divider is opaque, the first portion of the screen is only visible to a first user on the first side of the divider, and the second portion of the screen is only visible to a second user on the second side of the divider. Thus, the screen is effectively split' in two, such that each user cannot view the other user's side of the screen.
A developer may therefore implement a multi-user application on a single mobile computing apparatus relying on the opaque divider (rather than turn-by-turn based play) to keep each user's information confidential.
The opaque divider may include a planar opaque member. The planar opaque member may therefore simply cross the screen (typically across a central portion of the screen) in order to divide the screen in two.
The opaque divider may also include an opaque roof, extending either side of the opaque divider. The opaque root increases the range of angles in which a user on one side of the device cannot see the portion of the screen on the opposing side of the device.
The opaque divider may also include opaque sidewalls, extending either side of the opaque divider. The opaque sidewalls also increase the range of angles in which a user on one side of the device cannot see the portion of the screen on the opposing side of the device.
The opaque divider may also include a cross-shaped opaque member such that a first portion of the screen is in a first quadrant of the cross-shaped opaque member, a second portion of the screen is in a second quadrant of the cross-shaped opaque member, a third portion of the screen is in a third quadrant of the cross-shaped opaque member, and a fourth portion of the screen is in a fourth quadrant of the cross-shaped opaque member. Thus, an opaque divider may also be used to divide the screen into tour quadrants, increasing the number of users who may participate in a multi-user application.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example, and with reference to the drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view ot a divider of a first embodiment of the present invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view of a divider of a second embodiment of the present invention; and Figure 3 is a perspective view ot a divider of a third embodiment of the present invention.
A tirst embodiment of a divider 10 of the present invention will now be described with reference to Figure 1. The divider lOis constructed out of opaque material, such as opaque plastic, and includes a central planar member 11, a roof 13, a tirst sidewall 15, a second sidewall 16, and a pair of clips 17 (only the tirst clip is shown in Figure 1, however, the second clip is identical to the first clip and is positioned on the second sidewall 16).
As shown in Figure 1, the divider 10 is attachable to a mobile computing apparatus (in this case an iFhone ®), such that the central planar member 11 extends across a screen of the mobile computing apparatus. The user can therefore position the central planar member 11 such that it extends across a central portion of the screen of the mobile computing apparatus, effectively splitting the screen into first and second substantially equally sized portions.
The central planar member 11, root 13 and first and second sidewalls 15, 16 are all opaque.
Thus, a first user on a first side of the mobile computing apparatus can view the first portion of the screen, but cannot view the second portion of the screen as the opaque divider 10 is in the line of sight. Accordingly, a second user on a second side of the mobile computing apparatus can view the second portion of the screen, but cannot view the first portion of the screen as the opaque divider 10 is in the line of sight.
Therefore, an application developer can create applications for a mobile computing apparatus including the divider of the present invention, which involve multiple users but do not require turn-by-turn based play. Figure 1 shows a mobile computing apparatus playing the popular game Battleships'. Without the divider, the users on each side of the device would be able to see the location of the opponent's fleet and the game would be compromised. However, with the divider, the users can play as if they are effectively using two separate screens, and the divider 10 ensures that each user's information is not disclosed to the opponent on the other side of the mobile computing apparatus.
A second embodiment of a divider 20 of the present invention is shown in Figure 2. The divider 20 is essentially the same as the divider 10 of the first embodiment, and includes a central planar member 21, a roof 23, a first sidewall 25, a second sidewall 26, and a pair of clips 27 (again, only one clip is shown, but a second clip on the second sidewall 26 is also provided). In this embodiment, the divider 20 is slightly larger, adapted to attach to a tablet computer (in this case, an iPad ®) in order to split the screen of the tablet computer in two.
A third embodiment of a divider 30 of the present invention is shown in Figure 3. In this embodiment, the divider 30 includes a cross-shaped member 31, a roof 23, and a pair of clips 37. The divider 30 of the third embodiment of the invention therefore effectively splits the screen into four quadrants, such that a first user may view a first quadrant but not the second, third or fourth quadrants; a second user may view the second quadrant but not the first, third or fourth quadrants; a third user may view the third quadrant but not the first, second or fourth quadrant; and a fourth user may view the fourth quadrant but not the first, second or third quadrant. Thus, a developer may create an application involving four users, each using a quadrant of the same screen of a mobile computing apparatus.
The skilled person will understand that the divider of the present invention may be configured to attach to any form of mobile computing apparatus (such as any form of smartphone or tablet computer), in order to split the screen of the mobile computing apparatus into a plurality of portions. The present invention is therefore not limited to be used with the iPhone ® or iPad ® as in the examples above.
The skilled person will also understand that the divider of the present invention may be configured to split the screen of a mobile computing apparatus into any number of portions by using an appropriate number of dividers. The dividers of the first, second and third embodiments above split the screen into two or four portions by way of example.
Furthermore, the clips mentioned in the first, second and third embodiments are not the only form of attachment means suitable for the present invention. For example, suction cups or other attachment means may be used to attach the divider to the mobile computing apparatus.
The skilled person will also understand that the opaque sidewalls and roof are not essential features of the present invention. However, they increase the range of angles in which a user on one side of the opaque divider cannot see a portion of the screen on the opposing side of the opaque divider.
The skilled person will understand that any combination of features is possible within the scope of the present invention, as claimed.
