Abstract

A sliding window or patio door assembly has a window or patio door 10 which is formed from two panels 11 12 that slide within a lower sill member 13. The lower sill member includes a longitudinally extending channel 15 within which the window or door slides, the window or door carrying seals 21 which extend longitudinally along the lower frame member of the window or door to contact the sides of the channel to seal the lower frame member of the window or door to the sill. The channel is provided with a longitudinally extending support rib 17 on which the window or door slides and the lower frame member carries a pair of longitudinally extending seals 23 located one on each side of the support rib extending outwardly to engage the sides of the channel. Drainage holes 25 26 allow any water within the channel 15 to drain out. The sill has a flatter profile which allows elderly people to enter the building more easily.

Description

1
SLIDING WINDOW OR PATIO DOOR ASSEMBLY
This invention relates to sliding window and door assemblies and in particular to such assemblies in which a window or patio door slides within an outer frame, the outer frame having a lower sill member which slidably supports a lower frame member of the window or patio door.
Such assemblies are well known but normally suffer from problems due to the cross section of the sill being unacceptably deep due to the need to support the sliding window or door and also provide sealing arrangements for the sliding window and door. This requires the user to step over the high sill member when the assembly is housing a slidable patio door and this is highly inconvenient for users, particularly if they are older or disabled, and can lead to the user tripping over the sill member and is also difficult for wheel chair access.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a sliding window or door assembly which has a more compact sill member with a significantly reduced depth which greatly reduces the above problem.
Thus according to the present invention there is provided a sliding window or patio door assembly comprising a window or patio door which slides within an outer frame, the outer frame having a lower sill member which slidably supports a lower frame member of the window or patio door, the lower sill member including a longitudinally extending channel within which the window or door slides, the window or door carrying seals which extend longitudinally along the lower frame member of the window or door to contact the sides of the channel to seal the lower frame member of the window or door to the sill.
By recessing the window or door within the sill channel and sealing the window or door to the sill by seals also located in the channel the depth of the sill can be significantly reduced from, for example 10cms deep to say 2cms deep. This makes a considerable difference to the ease with which the user can pass over the sill when used as part of a patio door assembly.
The channel in the sill is preferably provided with a longitudinally extending support rib on which the window or door slides.
The lower frame member may carry a pair of longitudinally extending seals located one on each side of the support rib extending outwardly to engage the sides of the channel.
The lower edge of the lower frame member may include a longitudinally extending recess in which a support member is secured, the support member housing wheel sets which roll on the support rib, the support member also carrying the seals.
2
The support member may also include at least one substantially horizontally extending flange which projects out beyond the outer edge of the window or door to deflect water dripping from the bottom of the window or door.
The sill may include drainage means to allow any water which enters the channel to drain out of the sill.
The sill is preferably a metal extrusion made, for example, from aluminium.
The present invention also provides a lower sill member for use in a window or door assembly as described above, the sill having a longitudinally extending channel provided with a longitudinally extending support rib on which the window or door slides and having channel sides contacted by the seals carried by the window or door.
The present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:-
Figure 1 shows a perspective sectional view through the sill and lower frame members of an assembly in accordance with the present invention as applied to a patio door, and
Figure 2 shows the section of Figure 1 viewed orthogonally.
Referring to the drawings, a patio door assembly 10 has a fixed panel with a lower frame member 11 and a sliding panel with a lower frame member 12. Members 11 and 12 are supported within an outer frame the lower part of which is in the form of a sill 13.
Sill 13 includes a longitudinally extending channel 15 within which the sliding panel 12 is supported via wheel sets or rollers 16 which move along a support rib 17 which is an integral part of the sill. The wheel sets 16 each have an outer sheet metal housing 18 secured within an extruded support member 19 received within a longitudinally extending recess 20 in the lower frame member 12. As can be seen from Figure 1, support member 19 is sealed within lower frame member recess 20 by seals 21 which contact the sides of support member 19 and are supported in T-shaped slots 22 in the lower frame member 12. The support member 19 also carries two seals 23 which extend longitudinally along the lower frame member 12 and contact the sides of the channel 15 to seal the lower frame member of the sliding panel to the sill.
The support member 19 also includes at least one substantially horizontally extending flange 24 which projects out beyond the outer edge of the lower frame member 12 and, in addition to locating the support member 19 within recess 20, the outer flange 24a also deflects water dripping from the bottom of the lower frame member 12 away from channel 15. The sill 13 also includes drainage means (e.g. holes 25 and 26) to allow any water which enters the channel 15 to drain out of the sill.
3
The lower frame member 11 of the fixed panel of the patio door is of similar cross section to the member 12 and has a similar recess 20' which receives a support member 19' which includes the flanges 24, 24a and a support and locating flange 27 instead of the wheel sets 16. Flange 27 is received in a recess 28 provided in the sill 13. The support member 19' is sealed to the lower frame member 11 by seals 21' located in slots 22'.
Conveniently the sill 13 is an aluminium extrusion in order to have the necessary strength.
As will be appreciated, by recessing the lower frame member 12 of the sliding panel into the channel 15 and sealing the sliding panel to the sill by seals 23 also located in the channel, the depth of the sill can be significantly reduced. For example, the sill can be reduced from typically 10cms deep to say 2cms deep. This makes a considerable difference to the ease with which the user can step over the sill when used as part of a patio door assembly.
The invention can also be used with sliding window arrangements where the reduced sill height is again useful.
