Abstract

A reluctance motor 10 comprises a rotor comprising a plurality of rotor poles, and a stator comprising a plurality of stator poles. Each stator pole comprises a stator winding arranged to be driven by a substantially sinusoidal alternating current (AC) drive current so as to cause the rotor to rotate about a rotation axis of the motor. Each stator winding is arranged to be driven in one of a symmetric connection configuration (fig. 13) and an asymmetric connection configuration (fig. 12). Each stator winding may be arranged to be driven in the asymmetric connection configuration when the rotational speed of the motor is less than a motor speed threshold; and in the symmetric connection configuration when the rotational speed of the motor is greater than a motor speed threshold.
