Detailed Description
5
An anchor assembly in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention is illustrated in Figures 1 to 4. The anchor assembly comprises an anchor bracket 10 adapted to be located against the rear face of a wall or the rear face of an outer skin of a cavity wall construction, the anchor bracket 10 having horizontally extending securing prongs 12,14 to 10 be located into the mortar between adjacent courses of a brick wall to secure the anchor bracket 10 to the wall.
A sleeve 20 is provided to be located between adjacent bricks of the wall, in front of the anchor bracket 10, the sleeve 20 defining an opening 23 therethrough to give access to the 15 anchor bracket 10 from the exterior of the wall, whereby an attachment member 30 can be inserted through the sleeve 20 to engage the anchor bracket 10, an outer end of the attachment member 30 extending out of the front face of the wall to define an attachment point for an object, such as scaffolding or a ladder, such that the attachment member 30 can transfer a load applied thereto to the wall via the anchor bracket 10.
20
The attachment member 30 comprises an elongate member having a rear end shaped to define a hook 32 for engaging the anchor bracket 10, and a threaded forward end 34 onto which can be secured an eye bolt/nut 36. A protection plate 40 is locatable against the front face of the wall, an aperture being provided in said protection plate 40 to receive the forward 25 end 34 of the elongate attachment member 30, the protection plate 40 being secured to the front face of the wall by a nut 38 and washer 39 applied to the threaded end 34 of the attachment member 30 before the eye bolt/nut 36 is attached thereto, to protect the front face of the wall.
30 As shown in Figure 1, the anchor bracket 10 has an inverted U shaped planar plate portion adapted to lie against a rear face of a wall, the planar portion 16 having an elongate central section 16 and a pair of depending limbs extending 18,19 downwardly from either end of the central section, therefrom, an end of each depending limb being bent at 90° to define said
5
securing prongs 12,14 arranged to extend horizontally into the mortar between the bricks of adjacent courses of a brick wall to secure the anchor bracket 10 to the rear face of the wall.
The end of each securing prong 12,14 is provided with an arrow shaped profile to anchor the 5 securing prongs 12,14 into the mortar.
In use, the anchor bracket 10 is located against a rear face of the wall, or the rear face of the outer skin of the wall in the case of a cavity wall construction, with the securing prongs 12,14 embedded in the mortar between the adjacent courses of the wall, such that the central 10 section 16 of the anchor bracket 10 is located directly in line with the joint in the brickwork (i.e. aligned with the gap between adjacent bricks behind which the bracket is positioned) into which the sleeve 20 is located.
The sleeve 20 comprises a pair of parallel side plates 21,22 defining an opening 23 15 therebetween to be exposed to an outer face of the wall, into which opening can be inserted the attachment member 30. The width of the sleeve 20 is arranged to be approximately equal to the normal thickness of mortar provided between adjacent bricks, for example around 10mm.
20 The rear edge of each side plate 21,22 of the sleeve 20 is shaped to define a hook portion 24 to be located over the central section 16 of the anchor bracket 10 to lock the sleeve onto the anchor bracket.
As best shown in Figure 3, an upper wall defined between the side plates of the sleeve has a 25 downwardly depending recess 25 for receiving mortar to assist retention of the sleeve 10 between the bricks. A rear end 26 of the upper wall is shaped to act as a shield, preventing mortar from dropping onto the upper edge of the anchor bracket 10 during installation of the anchor assembly.
30 A guide wall 27 is provided between the side plates 21,22 of the sleeve 20, extending upwardly from a lower region of the opening 23 at a forward end of the sleeve 20 towards the rear of the sleeve 20, said guide wall 27 terminating adjacent the anchor bracket 10, such that the guide wall 27 guides insertion of the attachment member 30 into the sleeve 20 to ensure that the hook 32 readily engages the central section 16 of the anchor bracket 10 and
6
also acts as a drain to drain water out of the sleeve 20 towards the outer face of the wall. A forward end of the guide wall 27 defines a lip 60 arranged to extend beyond the front face of the wall into which the sleeve is located to drain water away from the front face of the all, preventing staining of the front face of the wall.
5
The guide wall 27 adjoins a downwardly extending rear wall 28 of the sleeve 20, an upper opening being defined between the rear ends of the side plates 21,22, above said rear wall 28, to allow passage of the hook 32 of the attachment member 30 therethrough whereby the hook 32 can be engaged over the centre section 16 of the anchor bracket 10. A lower 10 opening 29 is provided in the rear wall 28, below the guide wall 27, to allow passage of a lower end of the hook 32 of the attachment member 30 therethrough.
As shown in Figure 4, a plug like cover member 50 is provided for insertion into the opening 23 of the sleeve 20 when the attachment member 30 is removed and the anchor 15 assembly is not in use, sealing the sleeve 20 to prevent the ingress of water or insects therethrough.
The anchor bracket 10 and sleeve 20 are built into the wall during construction to form a permanent part of the wall construction. When not in use, the opening 23 of the sleeve 20 is 20 sealed by the cover 50. Numerous such anchor assemblies may be built into the walls of a building at any desired location where an anchor device may be required to secure objects, in particular scaffolding, to the wall. As described above, the sleeve 20 is dimensioned to fit between adjacent bricks in a course of bricks, within the same space normally occupied by mortar. The anchor bracket 10 is secured to the rear face of the wall, such that it is not 25 visible in the finished wall, the sleeve 20 providing access to the anchor bracket 10 to allow an attachment member to be secured thereto when desired.
When it is desired to utilise the anchor assembly to secure an object, such as scaffolding or a ladder, to the wall, the cover 50 is removed to expose the opening 23 through the sleeve 20 30 to provide access to the anchor bracket 10. The attachment member 30 can then be inserted through the sleeve 20 until the hook 32 of the anchor bracket engages the central section 16 of the anchor bracket 10, the guide wall 27 guiding passage of the hook 32 into position over the anchor bracket 10. Next a protection plate 40 is placed over the threaded end 34 of the attachment member 30 to protect the front face of the wall and is secured in place by the nut
7
38 and washer 39. The eye bolt/nut 36 is then screwed onto the exposed threaded end 34 of the attachment member 30, to provide an attachment point for said object.
While the anchor assembly of the present invention has been described in relation to 5 securing scaffolding or ladders to a wall, such assembly may have many other applications, for example to provide a mounting for a cable or line, such as a washing line, or to provide an anchor point for a lanyard or safety line for persons working at height.
Whilst the anchor assembly of the present invention has been described in relation to its use 10 with a brick wall, it is envisaged that it may be used to provide an anchor point on concrete panels or walls, infill panels or curtain walling.
The anchor assembly of the present invention can be easily installed during construction of a wall, for example by a bricklayer. The anchor assembly can be used when required without 15 any damage to the wall of block work. The permanent components of the anchor assembly remain substantially hidden when not in use and can be used to provide anchor points whenever maintenance work is required. The anchor assembly can also be utilised during construction of the building.
20 The invention is not limited to the embodiment(s) described herein but can be amended or modified without departing from the scope of the present invention.
