Abstract

A wallet with an external compartment 2 having an RFID-reflective rear-lining, facilitates the reliable use of an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Device) enabled card without interference from other cards contained within the wallet. An embossed area 5 on the external side of the compartment provides tactile indication of the correct side to place upon the RFID reader without requiring visual inspection.

Description

1
RFID-Shielded Compartment within Wallet
This invention allows a person to utilise an RFID-enabled card in a specific wallet compartment without interference from other similar cards within the same.
When using a service such as Transport for London's Oyster Card, an individual is often forced to keep their card outside of a wallet (or similar) due to interference from other items within that wallet preventing its effective use. Not only is this inconvenient (as it forces the individual to stop and search for their card within their bag, or retrieve it from their wallet, or from on their person), but it is also insecure, for a loose card is much more easily misplaced or stolen.
To overcome these problems, the present invention proposes a soft compartment slot behind one 'side' of the wallet into which the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) card is placed. On the rear of this slot, between the card and the rest of the contents of the wallet, is secured a lining designed to reflect RFID waves, ensuring that the only signal returned to the machine is the response of the intended card.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows the outer (rear) side of the wallet laid flat, with the soft compartment slot shown on the left.
Figure 2 shows an exploded view of the three-layer makeup of the compartment slot.
In Figure 1, the (non RFID-reflective) outer surface of the wallet (1) is shown covering the RFID-reflective lining within the compartment (2). The slot (3) enables the insertion of an RFID-enabled card into the compartment, and is secured by a Velcro seal (4). An embossed area (5) on the outer surface of the wallet indicates, by touch, the side which should be placed on the RFID pad without the need for visual inspection.
Figure 2 shows the outer surface of the wallet (1), under which is placed the RFID-enabled card of choice (6). Beneath this is the RFID-reflective lining (7) which ensures that incoming RFID signals (8) do not penetrate past the chosen card. This, in turn, enables interference-free signals (9) to be returned from the card to the RFID pad. Behind this lining is the normal interior wallet lining (10), allowing the normal use of the wallet for all other purposes.

Claims (1)

  1. Claims
    1. A wallet with an external compartment featuring an RFID-reflective rear-lining, facilitating the reliable use of an RFID-enabled card without interference from other cards contained within, and utilising tactile indication of that face through an embossed area, negating the need for visual inspection prior to use.
