Abstract

Packaging 10 comprises a planar board 20 for supporting a product, particularly a foodstuff such as a cake, and a shell-like body 30 defining a chamber 32 for receiving the product. The chamber has an opening 34 that is covered by the board when the board is attached to the body. The board and body together have at least one pair of interengageable profiles 40, 50 for securing them together. The interengageable profiles allow relative movement between the board and body, preferably about a central axis, between a first position in which they are secured together and a second position in which they are separable from one another. One of the profiles may be a channel for receiving the other. Preferably the inner surface of one of the profiles and outer surface of the other have complementary cam profiles configured to engage upon rotation and be separated upon counter rotation.

Description

S
TiTLE: PACKAGING
DESCRiPTiON
The present invention relates to packaging and particularly, but not exclusively, to packaging for foodstuffs such as cakes or the like, It is known in the art to package products in vacuum-formed clamshell packaging and such packaging is regularly used to package foodstuffs such as cakes and other baked goods.
The present applicant has identified the need for an improved form of packaging capable of manufacture with reduced reliance upon plastics material.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided packaging comprising: a substantially planar board for supporting a product; and a shell-like body defining a chamber for receiving a product, the chamber having an opening configured to be covered by the board when the board is attached to the shell-like body; wherein the board and shell- like body together dcfine at least one pair of interengageable profiles for securing the shell-like body to the board, the or each pair of interengageable profiles being configured to allow relative movement between the board and shell-like body between a first position in which the board and shell-I Ike body are secured together and a second position in which the board and shell-like body are separable from one another.
S In this way, packaging is provided in which a shell-like body formed from a first material may be itadily secured (e.g. by integral interengageable profiles) to a board formed from a second material different from the first material. The packaging may be used to package foodstuffs such as cakes or other baked foods, or to package other items such as toiletries (e.g. held in position by an insert supported by the board).
In one embodiment the board is substantially rigid (e.g. to allow the board to support a product of significant weight, for example a large cake).
In one embodiment, the board includes at least one paper or paperboard layer.
In one embodiment, the board comprises a plurality of layers (e.g. a laminated board).
En one embodiment, the shell-like body comprises plastics material.
In one embodiment, the shell-like body is vacuum formed.
In one embodiment, the shell-like body has a nansparent (e.g. translucent) portion for viewing a product stored therein.
In one embodiment, the or each pair of interengageable profiles is configured to allow relative movement between the board and shell-like body in a direction substantially nomial to the thickness of the board.
In one embodiment, one of the or each pair of interengageable profiles defines a channel for receiving the other one of the or each pair of interengageable profiles when in the fint position (e.g. to prevent relative movement between the board and shell-like body in a longitudinal disection (tg. parallel to the thickness of the board) when in the first position). hi one embodiment the channel-defining profile is provided on the shell-like body (e.g. with the shell-like body being configured to receive the board when in the second position and hold the board in the channel(s) when in the first position).
In one embodiment, the or each pair of interengageable profiles is configured to allow relative rotation between the board and shell-like body about a cenS axis between the first and second positions. In one embodiment the opening and board are substantially clitular. In one embodiment, the shell-like body is a domed or cylindrical shell.
In one embodiment, a radially innermost sur&cc of one of the or each pair of intcrcngagcable profiles and a radially outermost surfice of the other of the or each pair of interengageable profiles have complementwy cam profiles (e.g. curved peripheral profiles which increase in distance from the central axis between first and second angularly spaced points) configured to engage upon rotation about the cential axis and be separated upon counter rotation.
In one embodiment, the radially innermost and radially outermost surfaces are a snug fit when the board and shell-like body are in the second position.
In one embodiment, the first and second pasts comprise a plurality of pairs of interengageable profiles spaced eittumfcrcntially around the op4ming.
In one embodiment the plurality of pairs interengageable profiles are equally spaced around the opening.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, and with reference to the accompanying figures, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic perspective underside view of packaging in accordance with the present invention in first and second configurations; and Figure 2 is a schematic perspective view from above of the packaging of Figure 1 in the second configuration.
Fires 1 and 2 show cake packaging tO comprising a planar substantially circular paperboard board (or cake board) 20 and a plastics-based, vacuum formed transparent domed shell 30 defining a chamber 32 for receiving a cake (not shown), an opening 34 for accessing chamber 32 and a pcriphciy 36 surrounding opening 34 and defining a peripheat base38.
Board 20 and peripheral base 36 of shell 30 together define a plurality of equally angularly-spaced interengageable profiles 40 and 50 rcspectfiully for securing board 20 and tO shell 30 together. The intcmngageable profiles 40, 50 arc configured to allow relative rotation between board 20 and shcll 30 about a central longitudinal axis "A" between a finn position in which board 20 and shell 30 are secured together, and a second position in which board 20 and shell 30 att separable from one another.
Each profile 50 of shell 30 defines a channel 52 for slidingly receiving a corresponding profile 40 of the board to prevent relative movement between the shell and board in a longitudinal direction (i.e. in the direction of axis "A") when profiles 44) are so received, each channel 52 defining a radially innermost cant profile sur&cc 54 which is eonfigwed to engage upon rotation about axis "A" a radially outermost cam profile surface 42 of each respective profile 40 of board 20 as parts 20, 30 move from the second position to the first position. As is shown in Figure 1, profiles 40 are provided as tab-like projections extending from the periphery of board 20. Board 20 additionally includes a recess 24 forallowingausertoinsertafingerorthurabto griptheboard. Shell 30 further defines plurality of grips 39 formed by longitudinally extending grooves extending adjacent each profile 50.
Figure 1 shows board 20 and shell 30 orientated in the second position prior to engagement and subsequently in the first position after rotation of board 20 relative to shell about axis "A" in a clockwise direction. Cam profile surfaces 42, 54 of each interengageable profile 40, 50 are a snug fit when board 20 and shell 30 are in the first position and together define a stop for preventing ftirthcr rotation in the clockwise direction.
In use board 20 is held by a user with a thumb or finger in recess 24. Holding the board in position, shell 30 is inserted over board 20. Using grips 39 to hold shell 30 in position. board 20 is rotated clockwise 30 degrees (with profiles 40 being slidingly received by channels 52 in corresponding profiles 50) from the second position to the first position where cam profile surfaces 42, 54 meet to form a stop at five equally spaced points around the circumference of the opening 34. Board 20 and shell 30 may then be separated to access chamber 32 by rotating one pail relative to the other in the opposite sense.
Board 20 may have a thickness of approximately 3mm to provide a substantially rigid support for a large cake and may be at least partially covered with a paper/foil laminate. The assembled packaging 10 is formed with board 20 raised by 2mm from peripheral base 3 K
