Abstract

A belt drive comprises a belt (25, fig 1), e.g. a V-belt or V-ribbed belt, a driven pulley 26 and at least idler pulleys 29, 33, 34. The pulleys 26, 29, 33 and 34 are arranged relative to each other so that the belt (25) contacts in sequence idler pulley 29 one side of the drivel pulley 26, the idler pulley 33, an opposing side of the driven pulley and then the idler pulley 34. This arrangement of idler pulleys 26, 29 and 34 results in the belt (25) being held against distinct opposing sides or areas of the driven pulley 26 so that resultant force vectors F12 and F34 of inbound and outbound belt tensions T1-4 of each side/area of contact act in a subtractive manner and reduces a total hub load Fhub. Pulley 29 may drive an alternator 27 and driven pulley 26 may drive a compressor (11) of an air conditioning system (10). Other pulleys may drive a fan or a pump.
