Description

HAIR DRYER WITH A NOISE REDUCING MECHANISM
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a hair dryer with a noise reducing mechanism and, more particularly, to a hair dryer with a noise reducing mechanism for reducing the noise resulting from air intake.
Hair dryer is a necessary electric appliance for drying the hair of people. FIG 11 shows a conventional hair dryer including a housing 1', an electric heating mechanism 2', and a fan 3'. The housing I' includes a compartment II' receiving the electric heating mechanism 2' and the fan 3'. The housing 1' includes an air outlet 12' in a front end thereof and an air inlet 13' in a rear end thereof. A gridded cover 14' is mounted in the air inlet 13'. The electric heating mechanism 2' and the fan 3' are received in front and rear portions of the compartment 11'. The fan 3' can be operated to draw ambient air currents into the compartment 11' via the air inlet 13'. The air currents are heated by the heating mechanism 2' and exit the housing I' via the air outlet 12'.
As indicated by the arrows in FIG. 11, when the ambient air currents pass through the air inlet 13' having a smaller diameter, the air currents impact a periphery of the air inlet 13' and cause noise at a location "a". Turbulence is generated in the air currents entering the compartment 11' and impacts the inner periphery of the housing 1', significantly increasing the noise. In use, the noise causes discomfort to a person whose hair is being dried, because the hair dryer near is near a head of the person. The noise also causes professional injury to the hearing of the workers in beauty shops or the like.
FIG 12 shows another conventional hair dryer disclosed in Taiwan Patent Publication No. 566114 for avoiding the above disadvantages. The hair dryer includes two housings 4' and 5'. The housing 4' can be held by a hand of a user. The housing 4' includes an air outlet 41' and receives an electric heating mechanism 42'. The housing 5' includes an air inlet 51' and receives a fan 52'. A tube 6' for guiding air is mounted between the housings 4' and 5'. The fan 52' can be operated to draw anThient air currents into the housing 5', and the air currents arc guided into the housing 4' via the tube 6'.
The air currents entering the housing 4' are heated by the electric heating mechanism 42' and exit the housing 4' via the air outlet 41'. Through use of the tube 6', the noise resulting from air intake is distant to a person whose hair is being dried. Thus, the person will not feel discomfort when the outlet 41' of the housing 4' is near the head of the person for drying the hair.
However, the tube 6' causes inconvenience to the user holding the housing 4'.
Furthermore, the tube 6' increases the travel of the air currents and reduces the air output efficiency. Further, the total costs of the hair dryer are increased due to the additional components.
FIG. 13 is a conventional hair dryer similar to the hair dryer of FIG. II. An air-permeable sponge 7' is mounted in the air inlet 13' to reduce the noise resulting from air intake.
However, the sponge 7' causes wind resistance and, thus, reduces the air output amount. Thus, the hair dryer has poor efficiency and fails to provide the desired effect.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
With reference to FIGS. 1-3, a hair dryer with a noise reducing mechanism of a first embodiment according to the present invention includes a housing 1, an electric heating mechanism 2, a fan 3, an air guiding tube 4, and a sound absorber 5. The housing 1 is comprised of a front housing 101 and a rear housing 102 that are coupled together.
The housing I includes a compartment 11 in a central portion thereof The housing 1 further includes an air outlet 12 in a front end thereof and an air inlet 13 in a rear end thereof A gridded cover 14 is mounted to the air inlet 13 to prevent hair or alien objects from entering the compartment 11.
The electric heating mechanism 2 is mounted in a front portion of the compartment 11 of the housing 1. The fan 3 is mounted in a rear portion of the compartment 11 of the housing 1 and can be driven by a motor 31 mounted in the compartment 11.
The air guiding tube 4 is integrally formed with the rear housing 101 at a location between the fan 3 and the air inlet 13. The front and rear housings 101 and 102 have shapes allowing easy assembly of the components. The air guiding tube 4 includes an air guiding hole 41 coaxial to the air inlet 13. An end 42 of the air guiding tube 41 is integrally formed with the air inlet 13. The other end 43 of the air guiding tube 41 is located adjacent to the fan 3 and has a lip 44. An outer periphery of the air guiding tube 4 is spaced from an inner periphery of the housing 1 by a spacing 111.
The sound absorber 5 can be made of a sponge, a sound absorbing foam, or other sound absorbing material. The sound absorber 5 is annular and hollow and includes a central hole 51 extending along the longitudinal axis of the air guiding hole 41. The sound absorber 5 is fixed to an inner periphery of the air guiding hole 41 by gluing. The sound absorber 5 has an end abutting the lip 44.
With reference to FIG. 4, in use, the fan 3 is operated to draw ambient air currents through the air inlet 13 into the air guiding hole 41 having a smaller diameter.
The air currents are then guided to the fan 3. Since the air currents flowing from the wider outside into the air guiding tube 4 having a smaller diameter impact the sound S absorber 5 while passing through the air guiding tube 4, a muffling effect is provided by the sound absorber 5. Instead of dircctly impacting the inner periphery of the air guiding tube 4, the incoming air currents impact the sound absorber 5, avoiding the air guiding tube 4 from becoming a noise source while reducing the noise resulting from the air intake of the hair dryer. Thus, the noise at the location "b" can be significantly reduced.
The spacing ill between the air guiding tube 4 and the housing I further reduces the noise resulting from the impact to the inner periphery 1 by the incoming air currents while providing a concentrating effect and a guiding effect for the air currents.
Furthermore, the air currents in the air guiding hole 41 flow through the central hole 51 of the sound absorber 5 without obvious resistance to the air currents. Thus, the resultant noise of the hair dryer can be significantly reduced while maintaining better air output efficiency. Further, the lip 44 in the air guiding hole 41 abuts the end face of the sound absorber 5 to prevent the sound absorber 5 from disengaging from the air guiding hole 41 under the action of the suction force during operation of the fan 3, providing enhanced assembling stability.
The air guiding tube 4 can be integrally formed with or separate from the housing I. FIGS. 5 and 6 show a second embodiment similar to the first embodiment. In this embodiment, the air inlet 13 of the housing I includes a threaded portion 131. The outer periphery of the air guiding tube 4 has a threaded portion 45. The threaded portion of the air guiding tube 4 is threadcdly engaged with the threaded portion 131 of the air inlet 13 of the housing 1, with the air guiding hole 41 aligned with the air inlet 13, with the end 43 of the air guiding tube 4 located adjacent to the fan 3, providing a noise reducing effect.
FIG 7 shows a third embodiment similar to the first and second embodiments.
In this embodiment, the air inlet 13 of the housing I includes a coupling portion 132 having a coupling hole. The air guiding tube 4 includes a coupling portion 46 having a coupling member. The coupling portion 46 of the air guiding tube 4 is coupled with the coupling portion 132 of the air inlet 13 of the housing 1, with the air guiding hole 41 aligned with the air inlet 13, with the end 43 of the air guiding tube 4 located adjacent to the fan 3, providing the noise reducing effect. Furthermore, this arrangement allows easy detachment of the air guiding tube 4 and the sound absorber 5 for cleaning purposes.
FIGS. 8 and 9 show a fourth embodiment similar to the first embodiment. In this embodiment, the outer periphery of the air guiding tube 4 has a threaded portion 45.
The gridded cover 14 includes a threaded portion 141 threadedly engaged with the threaded portion 45 of the air guiding tube 4. After assembly of the air guiding tube 4 and the gridded cover 14, the gridded cover 14 is engaged in the air inlet 13 of the housing 1, providing the noise reducing effect. This arrangement allows the air guiding tube 4 and the sound absorber 5 to be mounted into a hair dryer while allowing easy detachment for cleaning purposes.
The air guiding tube 4 and the gridded cover 14 can be assembled with each other by snapping fasteners or other provisions. FIG. 10 shows a fifth embodiment similar to the fourth embodiment. In this embodiment, an end of the air guiding tube 4 includes a threaded portion 47 threadedly engaged with the threaded portion 131 of the air inlet 13, and the other end of the air guiding tube 4 extends beyond the housing 1.
This arrangement also significantly reduces the noise during the air intake of air currents from the wider outside while providing better air output efficiency.
Although specific embodiments have been illustrated and described, numerous modifications and variations are still possible without departing from the essence of the invention. The scope of the invention is limited by the accompanying claims.
