Abstract

A sports post 2 made of a plastics material and having a proximal end 3 adapted to be attached to a base. The post 2 may be cylindrical and tubular and may be filled 8 with expanded polyurethane foam to strengthen it. The post may be weighted at its proximal end 3 and this may be provided by having material 9 denser than the plastics material of the post positioned internally within the proximal end of the post. The post may be sealed at either end by safety caps 5 and 6.

Description

Sports Post The present invention relates to a sports post.
In order to play the game of rounders, four posts are required to mark out the pitch.
Traditionally these posts comprise a wooden pole and a rubber base, the pole being tipped with a safety cap.
Unfortunately traditional rounders posts are beset with problems, as they are prone to tipping over upon contact with a player. Furthermore, the posts are liable to becoming unusable owing to the pole warping over time.
The present invention seeks to address these issues.
According to the present invention there is provided a sports post pole having a main body with a proximal end adapted to be attached to a base and a distal end wherein the main body of the pole is substantially formed of a plastics material.
By providing a pole that has a main body formed of a plastics material the pole is lightened and is therefore less liable to be knocked over by a player when in use. Furthermore, owing to it being formed of a plastics material the pole will not warp over time.
Preferably the main body of the pole is cylindrical.
Provision of a cylindrical pole allows for it to be used with existing sports post bases and safety caps.
In one embodiment the main body of the pole is tubular.
A tubular pole is very light and therefore even less prone to tipping over.
Preferably the pole is at least partly filled with a strengthening material.
By strengthening the pole it is less likely to be damaged during use. Further, if it is damaged in use the pole may be protected from shattering by the strengthening material.
In one embodiment the pole is at least partly filled with a foam material.
Preferably the pole is substantially filled with a foam material. Preferably the foam material is expanded polyurethane.
Foam materials and in particular expanded polyurethane provide for a lightweight way to strengthen the tubular pole.
Preferably the pole is weighted adjacent to its proximal end. Preferably the pole is internally weighted adjacent to its proximal end. Preferably the pole is internally weighted adjacent to its proximal end with a material denser than the plastics material that the main body of the pole is formed from.
By weighting the pole adjacent to its proximal end the pole is even less likely to be knocked over in use.
Preferably the pole is sealed at its proximal end with a cap.
Sealing the proximal end with a cap ensures that the nothing can go in or out of the pole through that opening.
Preferably the pole is sealed at its distal end with a cap. Preferably the cap comprises an elongate neck that extends inside the pole towards the proximal end thereof.
Sealing the distal end with a cap ensures that the nothing can go in or out of the pole through that opening. Furthermore, provision of an elongate neck provides a further reinforcement at the distal end, which may be useful if accessories are to be attached to the pole.
A specific embodiment will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: Figure 1 depicts a schematic cross-section of a pole made in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 illustrates the pole of Figure 1 in a rounders post assembly.
Referring to Figure 1 there is provided a rounders post pole having a main body 2. Main body 2 is formed of a heavy duty extruded plastic, for example high density polyethylene, but any other suitable plastics material might be employed.
Main body 2 of pole 1 is a cylindrical tube having a proximal end 3 and a distal end 4. Proximal end 3 of main body 2 is sealed with a first plastic cap 5.
Distal end 4 of main body 2 is sealed with a second plastic cap 6 that has an elongate neck 7 extending inside main body 2 from distal end 4 towards proximal end 3.
Inside main body 2 and running from cap 6 towards proximal end 3 is located expanded polyurethane foam filler 8. Filler 8 extends towards proximal end 3 over 50% of the length of main body 2. Thus, main body 2 is filled along at least a part of its length with a foam material.
Adjacent to proximal end 3 and running from cap 5 towards distal end 4 is located sand 9 that acts as a weighting material. It will be apparent that although the present embodiment employs kiln-dried sand any suitable material in order to give weight to the proximal end of pole 1 could be used.
Thus main body 2 is filled along part of its length adjacent to proximal end 3 with a weighting material, in the present embodiment sand.
Turning to the pole in use and referring to Figure 2 pole is provided with a safety cap 10 at distal end 4 and proximal end 5 is inserted into high-density rubber compound base 11. The rounders post assembly 12 may then be deployed upon a pitch.
Owing to the nature of pole 1 assembly 12 is very stable. This is so owing to the main body being formed of a plastics material and is further assisted by internally weighting pole 1 adjacent to its proximal end with a weighting material. In the present embodiment the weighting material is heavier than the plastics material out of which main body 2 of the pole is formed.
Indeed tests have demonstrated that rounders post assemblies employing poles made in accordance with the present invention are much less prone to tipping over than posts comprising traditional wooden poles. Indeed in one test the angle at which a post would fall over was increased from around 25 degrees off vertical to around 37 degrees, a marked improvement.
Furthermore, owing to main body 2 of pole 1 being formed of a plastics material pole 1 will not warp over time.
Evidently, although the present embodiment relates to a rounders posts there might be a wide variety of other sports with which a pole made in accordance with the present invention might be used.
Many variations are possible without departing from the scope of the present invention as set out in the appended claims.
