Abstract

A rake 10 for levelling and smoothing wet uncured concrete comprises an elongate handle 22 and a rake head 24, 34 extending transverse to the handle. A first side of the head defines an elongate blade 136 or a row of teeth or tines 26, and an opposite side of the head defines a curved smoothing surface 25, 34. The curved surface may be made of a cylindrical tube 28, or a curved sheet 34. The curved surface 25 may extend on either side of the row of tines 26.

Description

A Rake This invention relates to a rake for working wet uncured concrete.
According to the present invention there is provided a rake comprising an elongate handle, a rake head provided at one end of the handle extending transverse to the handle, a first side of the head defming an elongate blade or a row of teeth or tines, a second side of the head, opposite said first side, defining a curved smoothing surface.
When used for working wet uncured concrete, the first side of the head can be used to level wet uncured concrete while the sccond side of the head can be used to smooth the surface of the concrete.
In one embodiment said head is formed from an elongate cylindrical body, said elongate blade or row of tines or teeth extending from the cylindrical body on said first side of the head, said curved smoothing surface bcthg defined by an outer side of said cylindrical body on said second side of the head. Said cylindrical body may have a diameter of at least 25mm, more preferably at least 30mm. In a preferred embodiment the cylindrical body has a diameter of at least 50mm.
In an alternative embodiment said body comprises an elongate plate or sheet like member extending perpendicular to the handle, a first transverse side of said plate like member terminating in an edge defining said elongate blade or row of teeth or tines of said first side of the head, a second transverse side of the plate being curved to define a U shaped cross section, an outer side of said curved section forming said smoothing surface of the second side of the head. Said curved section may have a diameter of at least 12.5mm, more preferably at least 25mm.
The row of tines or teeth may be provided on a central region of the head, said curved smoothing surface extending on either side of the row of tines.
Said row of tines or teeth may comprise flat teeth. Preferably said row of tines or teeth comprise a blade like member having a serrated edge to define said tines. Ahernatively said first side of the head defines a blade like member having a substantially straight edge.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with referencc to the accompanying drawings, in which:-Figure 1 is a perspcctivc view of a rake in accordance with a first embodiment of the present invention; Figure 2 is a side vicw of thc rake of Figurc U Figure 3 is a perspective view of a rake in accordancc with a sccond embodimcnt of the present invention; Figure 4 is a side vicw of thc rake of Figurc 3; Figure 5 is a first perspective view of a rake in accordancc with a third embodimcnt of the present invention; Figure 6 is a second perspective view of the rake of FigureS; Figure 7 is a side vicw of thc rake of Figure 5; Figure 8 is a perspective view of a rake in accordance with a fhriher embodiment of the present invention.
A rake in accordance with a first embodiment of the invention is illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. The rake I comprises an elongate handle 2, a rake head 4 being mounted on an end of the handle 2 to extend transverse to the handlc 2. The rake head 4 is formed from an elongate cylindrical tube 5 having a diameter of 50mm or more. A row of tines 6 extend from one side of the tube 5 to extend substantially perpendicular to the handle 2 such that the tines 6 can be used to lcvel a area of wet uncured concrete. A second side of the tube 5, opposite the tines 6, defines a curvcd outer surface 8 which can be used for smoothing an area of wet uncured concrete. The row of tines 6 comprise flat teeth formed in a blade like member having a serrated edge to define said tines. Alternatively the tines may comprise a plurality of separate teeth or elongate nail like members arranged in a row extending from the rake head perpendicular to both the rake head and the handle. Further alternativdy said blade like member may comprise a straight edge, devoid or tines or teeth.
The rakc head 4 and handle 2 may be formed from a metal, such as steel or aluminium, or from a plastic.
A rake 10 in accordance with a second embodiment of the present invention is illustrated in Figures 3 and 4. The rake 10 is similar to that of Figure 1, comprising and elongate handle 22 and a rake head 24 formed from an elongate cylindrical tube 25 having a row of tines 26 extending from oae side thereof. However, the width of the rake head 24 is greater than that of the embodiment of Figure 1, such that the rake head 24 may extend between shuttering to allow it to be used as a screed. The row of tines 25 extend over a central region of the rake head 24, the row of tines 26 having a width less than that of the rake head 24.
A rake 30 in accordance with a third embodiment of the present invention is illustrated in Figures 5 to 7. The rake 30 comprises an elongate handle 32 having a rake head 34 mounted on an end of the handle 32 to extend transverse to the handle 32.
The rake head 34 is formed from a plate like member having a first longitudinal side termiaating in a serrated edge defining a row or tines or teeth 36. The second longitudinal side 37 of the rake plate like member, opposite said first longitudinal side, is curved to define a U shaped cross section, an outer side of said curved side 37 defining a curved smoothing surface 38 that can be used to smooth a region of wet uncured concrete. Said curved side 37 may have a radius of at least 25mm.
The handle 32 may be supported within a mounting tube 39 welded to a rear of the first longitudinal side of the rake head and to an edge of the second longitudinal side 37, as shown in Figures 5 and 7.
In a modified embodiment, shown in Figure 8, the first longitudinal side of the rake head 34 may terminate in a straight blade like edge fl6, devoid of teeth or tines. Such straight edge may be used as a scraper, for example for cleaning cattle stalls.
While the rake of the present invention has been described in relation to a tool for working wet uncured concrete, it is envisaged that such rake may have a large number of uses, including clearing snow, raking leaves and/or spreading, raking or smoothing numerous granular or particulate materLals, such as soil, gravel or wood chippings or for scraping substances off a surface.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment(s) described herein but can be amended or modified without departing from the scope of the present invention.
