Abstract

The counterbore and chamfer tool 1 is to create a counter bore W and chamfer X at one end of a pre-drilled hole Y. The tool includes a tool shaft 2 and a cutting tool 4 at the end of the shaft having a first section 5 to cut the counter bore W in a workpiece Z. A second section 6 with a tapered face 6A is axially spaced from and adjacent to the first section. The second section cuts a chamfer X at one end of the counterbore remote from the pre-drilled hole. The first section may have a cutting face at one end.

Description

Title: Counterbore and Chamfer Tool The present invention relates to a counterbore and chamfer tool.
Counterboring of pre-drilled holes to accommodate cap headed screws has always been a problem with counterboring tools.
Using conventional counterborers always creates an unsightly burr at the top of the hole and the more the counterborer wears, the more the burr increases, which can be difficult to remove. To remove this buff, it can be filed flat then deburred with a modular deburring tool which never looks professional, or chamfered with a countersink tool which is time consuming and make counterboring a pre-dril led hole a two operation process.
The invention seeks to provide a tool which avoids these problems.
According to the present invention there is provided a counterbore and chamfer tool to create a counterbore and chamfer at one end of a pre-drilled hole comprising: a) a tool shaft, b) a cutting tool at the end of the shaft having a first section to cut a counterbore at one end of a pre-drilled hole in a workpiece, and a second section with a tapered face axially spaced from and adjacent the first section to cut a chamfer at one end of the counterbore remote from the pre-drilled hole.
Preferably the first section has a cutting face at one end.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing showing a side view of a tool above a cross section of a workpiece worked on by the tool.
Referring to the drawing there is shown a counterbore and chamfer tool I to create a counterbore W and chamfer X at one end of a pre-drilled hole Y in a workpiece 1 Tool I has a main tool shaft 2 with a threaded end 3 to connect to a tool head.
A cutting tool 4 is provided at the end of the shaft 2 having a first section 5 with a cutting face 5A to cut counterbore W at one end of pre-drilled hole Y in a workpiece Z, and a second section 6 with a tapered face 6A axially spaced from and adjacent the first section to cut the chamfer X at one end of the counterbore remote from the pre-drilled hole.
The invention provides a two in one operational cutting tool which is a solution to the aforesaid problems in engineering maching and on the tool the counterbore depth may be set at lnt/rn below the cap head screw to produce a.5OmIni chamfer on top of the counterbore.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention. I.
