Abstract

A system fitted to a vehicle passenger seat with the seat back 4 pivoting 2 relative to the seat base 5. When a force is applied to the seat back in the forward direction by either the seatbelts preventing forward movement of the passenger sitting in the seat, or a passenger colliding with the back of the seat the seat back will move forward in a controlled manner by a part 1 stretching until the seat back 4 comes into contact with a stop 3, which is part of the seat base in the example shown in the drawing. If the force then increases after reaching this point, forward movement is kept to a minimum by the stop 3. This reduces injury to passengers impacting the seat from behind, but allowing the seatbelt to function for the person sitting in the seat. The device 1 may have an area designed to break under a specified load.

Description

System to regulate and restrict forward movement of a seat back in an accident Seats in road passenger vehicles are required to meet regulations to ensure that any chance of injury to passengers in accidents is reduced. In the case of a seat with seatbelts fitted, one of these regulations is for seat anchorages; this requires the points on the seat to where the seatbelt is attached to withstand specified test loads in a forward direction to simulate a person belted into the seat during an accident. Another regulation is seat strength, which has a requirement that if the seat is hit from behind by a passenger during an accident, the seat will move a specified amount to reduce the harm inflicted on the person and this is tested by applying forces in the forward direction onto the back of the seat using shaped blocks and measuring how far they move. The forces involved in the anchorage test are far greater than those in the seat strength test. The forces applied in both tests are a lot larger than those encountered by the seats on a day to day basis, but the design issue here is that the tests are contradictory in their requirements, as the lower force requires maximum movement, whilst the Larger force requires minimaL movement.
To overcome this problem, the seat is designed with the seat back (4) being ailowed to pivot (2) relative to the seat base (5). When a force is applied to the seat back in the forward direction (by either the seatbelts preventing forward movement of the passenger sitting in the seat, or a passenger colliding with the back of the seat) the seat back will be allowed to move forward in a controlled manner by a part (1) stretching until the seat back (4) comes into contact with the stop (3), which is part of the seat base in the example shown in the drawings. If the force then increases after reaching this point, forward movement is kept to a minimum by the stop (3). This reduces injury to passengers impacting the seat from behind, but allowing the seatbelt to function for the person sitting in the seat.
The system will be described referring to the accompanying figures as examples, only the seat frame (no cushions etc) is shown for clarity: The seat back (4) is able to move relative to the seat base (5) about a pivot (2), in this case the pivot (2) is attached to the seat base (5), although in other designs it could be attached to the seat back (4). This movement is restricted by a part (1) (in this particular example a steel strip) attached to both the base (5) and the back (4) which will resist but allow a steady forward movement under a large force, this is to prevent small bumps and other forces allowing the seat to flex excessively. The part (1) is designed to allow the back (4) to move forwards the correct amount to satisfy the seat strength test just as the seat back (4) meets the stop (3), which is a reinforced area of the seat base (although it could be part of the seat back designed to meet the seat base). In this example it is a piece of box section, although some other rigid piece could be used.
If the seatbelts were being pulled, the load could continue to increase on the seat back but the stop (3) would provide adequate resistance to the additional force, allowing the seat back to remain in the same position. Figures 1-3 show the seat in its original configuration, Figure 4 shows the system under a load equal or larger than that of the seat strength test.
The part (1) may have one or more areas deliberately weakened to allow them to stretch or break (la) under loading to allow a coritrofled predictable movement and to ensure the seat back (4) moves forward far enough to satisfy seat strength requirements.
