Abstract

A potted plant extractor comprises a horizontal handle, a vertical leg and a horizontal arm (in use) and is used by inserting the arm and leg along the inside wall of the pot until it reaches the bottom of the pot. The handle rotated in relation to the top edge of the pot so that the arm at the bottom of the pot moves towards the middle of the pot which allows the contents of the pot to be lifted vertically. The extractor is used when re-potting a plant so that the plant pot does not need to be turned upside down.

Description

Potted Plant Extractor When re-potting a plant, the person performing the task has to turn the plant upside down. This results in a reasonable amount of soil falling away from the roots and potential to damage any flower or leaves that may touch the ground. Additionally, roots are often caught in the holes at the bottom of the pot, making it difficult to remove the plant and associated soil from the pot.
This invention can be inserted inside of the pot between the soil and the wall of the pot. Once it reaches the bottom of the pot, the handles are turned at the top allowing the sweeping arms to move along the bottom of the pot extending toward the middle of the pot. The device can then be moved along the inside surface of the pot freeing the sides and freeing any roots attached to holes at the base.
The plant can then be lifted out of the pot vertically with the sweeping arms potentially supporting the weight of the plant and associated soil without any need to turn the pot upside-down.
This invention is comprised of at least one and preferably two extractor units in which each extractor unit is comprised of a sweeping arm, a leg, and a handle. The sweeping arm is attached to a first end of the leg and the handle is attached to the second end of the leg. The sweeping arm is preferably attached to the first end of the leg at an angle of between 75 and 105 degrees, and in one embodiment of the present invention around 90 degrees to the leg so that in combination the sweeping arm and leg make an "L" shape. The angle is determined according to the geometry of the pot from which the plant and soil are to be extracted (specifically the angle between the bottom of the pot and the side wall of the pot) and it will be understood that angles outside of the above discussed range are within the scope of the present invention. The joint between the sweeping arm and the leg may be rigid or be formed from a hinge. When the joint is a hinge there may be limits to the amount of rotation that is possible about that hinge.
The sweeping arm may extend from the joint between arm and leg in a straight fashion or may extend in an arc or curve. Most preferably, the arc or curve is adapted to be substantially the same as a portion of the inside face of the pot that the plant and associated soil are to be removed from.
The leg may be of a fixed length or may be adjustable in length. It may, for example, be telescopic.
The handle may be of any configuration that allows a user to conveniently grip the handle and cause the leg to rotate about its longitudinal axis. In one preferred embodiment, the handle is longitudinally extending and attached at an angle to the leg so that the leg can be caused to rotate about its longitudinal axis by pushing or pulling the handle in a plane substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the leg. Most preferably the handle is fixed to the leg at an angle of between 75 and 105 degrees to the leg. In one preferred embodiment, the handle is fixed to the leg so that the handle and the sweeping arm extend in approximately opposite directions.
Where the present invention is comprised of two extractor units, there is further provided a joining unit which attaches the legs of the two extractor units together so that the longitudinal axes of the legs are substantially parallel and both legs may rotate about their longitudinal axis without any movement of the joining unit. Most preferably in such an arrangement, the sweeping arms are positioned so that when the legs are rotated about their longitudinal axis they do not interfere with each other.
The length of the or each sweeping arm is preferably such that the maximum area of the bottom of the pot is passed over when the or each leg is rotated about its longitudinal axis.
The attached drawings show one example of a plant pot extractor according to the present invention.

  1. <claim-text>Claims 1. A potted-plant extractor unit comprising of a horizontal handle, a vertical leg and a horizontal sweeping arm such that the arm can be pushed down towards the base of the plant pot along the inside wall of the pot and the handle turned clockwise relative to the top edge of the plant pot causing the handle to point outwards from the edge of the pot which results in the arm at the base pointing towards the middle of the pot allowing the whole device to then be moved along the inside face of the pot to free the plant soil and roots from the wall and base of the pot before vertical extraction of the contents of the pot.</claim-text> <claim-text>2. A potted-plant extractor unit according to claim 1, in which the horizontal sweeping arm is adjustable in length to reflect the radius of the base of the plant pot. (4</claim-text> <claim-text>3. A potted-plant extractor unit according to claim 1, in which the vertical leg is adjustable in height to reflect the height of the plant pot.</claim-text> <claim-text>4. A potted-plant extractor unit according to any of the preceding claims, in which a joining unit holds two extractor units at the vertical leg area of each unit, so that the legs are substantially parallel and both legs can rotate about their longitudinal axis, the vertical positioning being such that the horizontal sweeping arms do not interfere with each other.</claim-text>
