Abstract
A blank (figure 2) for forming a packaging carton (figure 6). The blank has panels for forming front and rear walls 2,4, a top 3 and a base 1 and side walls; the side walls may be formed from flaps 1a-4c. The panels for forming the base, top and front and rear walls may be joined in a series of parallel folds. There is at least one panel 5 adapted to form a prop for supporting the carton when erected (10 in figure 6). The prop-forming panel 5 may comprise edge parts 8, attaching the prop to the base 8 and first and second prop parts 9, 10, and may have an engagement part at the distal end. The edge parts 8 of the prop-forming panel 5 may be separated from the panel by cuts. This engagement part may be a tab 11, which may be inserted into a slot 7 in the base panel. The side walls may form an acute angle at the front wall-base junction.
Description
BLANK AND CARTON
Background to the Invention
[00011 This invention relates to a blank for forming a packaging carton and a carton formed from the blank.
[00021 It is well known for cartons to have front panels or portions that can be removed so that products contained in the carton can be viewed and removed by purchasers. In certain proposals, such cartons have internal base panels that slope downwardly towards the front of the carton so that products will slide or roll towards the front of the carton, facihtating their display and removal.
Summary of the Invention
[00031 We have found that a simpler, yet sufficiently robust carton can be formed if the base panel is truly external, the only part of the carton below the base panel being a prop at the rear of the carton.
[00041 The present invention provides a blank of stiff but foldable board material for forming a packaging carton, the blank having panels or flaps for forming a front wall, a base, a rear walL a top and two side walls of the carton, and having at least one panel for forming a prop extending transvers&y of the carton at or near the junction of the base and rear walls, such that the finished carton can be placed on a fiat surface with support only (a) by the or each prop and (b) at or adjacent a lower horizontal edge of the front wall.
[00051 In one embodiment, the blank comprises front, base, rear and top panels joined in a series at parallel fold lines for forming the front, base, rear arid top walls of the carton. The blank may comprise side flaps for forming the side walls.
The Nank may be configured to form side walls having an acute angle at the junction of the base and the front wall.
[00061 The blank may comprise a prop panel extending from an edge of the rear panel or the base panel parallel to said fold lines. The prop panel may have a transverse crease enabling the formation of a prop with the crease at the bottom thereof. An engagement part may be provided at an end of the prop panel remote from said edge. For example, a tab of the prop panel may be receivable in a slot in one of the base panel, the rear panel or the fold line therebetween.
[0007] The prop panel may comprise edge parts arranged to be attached to the base panel and a prop part located between the edge parts and separated therefrom by cuts.
[00081 The invention also provides a packaging carton formed from the blank described above.
Brief Description of the Drawings
[00091 The invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: [0010] Figure 1 is a plan of a blank according to a first embodiment of the invention; [0011] Figure 2 is a plan of a blank according to a second embodiment of the invention; [00121 Figures 3 and 4 are perspective views of the folding of the base of the carton; [00131 Figure 5 is a side view of the erected carton; and [00141 Figure 6 shows the opened carton.
Detailed description of particular embodiments
[0015] Figures 1 arid 2 show at ternative blanks that have been cut from double-faced corrugated paperboard. Solid lines indicate cuts, dashed (long dash) lines indicate score lines and dotted (short dash) lines indicate perforations.
[0016] The blank of Figure 1 includes a series of generally rectangular panels joined at successive transverse fold lines, namely a base panel 1, a front panel 2, a top panel 3, a rear panel 4 and a prop panel 5. Flaps la, 2a, 3a, 4a extend on either side of the base, front, top and rear panels respectively. Each of the flaps is trapezium shaped, and non-transverse sloping edges of the flaps meet the fold line between the base panel 1 and the front panel 2 and the fold line between the top pan& 3 and the rear panel 4. A tab 6 extends from the remaining side of the base panel 1.
[00171 At the centre of the fold line between the rear panel 4 and the prop panel 5, a slot 7 is formed, occupying about half the length of that line.
[00181 The prop panel 5 is formed from a generally U-shaped base attachment part 8, surrounding a first prop part 9 and a second prop part 10. The latter are joined by a transverse fold line and are separated from the attachment part 8 by cuts at their lateral edges; a fold line joins the second prop part 10 to the attachment part 8. A tab 11 having a length similar to that of the slot 7 is provided at the free side of the first prop part 9.
[0019] A removable part of the panel is formed in a conventional manner by a line of perforations 12 running across the front and top panels 2, 3 and merging with parts of the fold lines between those panels and their flaps 2a, 3a.
[0020] The blank of Figure 1 is suitable for erection, and simultaneous packaging of goods, by a machine. The bbnk of Figure 2 is suitable for manual erection. To this end the flaps 2b, 4b on one side of the front panel 2 and the rear panel 4 are formed with oblique fold lines. This blank can be supplied to a user in a partially glued, flat condition. In particular, the series of panels 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 is folded up at the transverse fold lines. Notably the tab 6 is not glued to the base panel 4. The attachment part 8 is glued to the outside of the base panel 4. Triangular parts 2c, 4c of the flaps 2b, 4b are glued to the flaps la, 3a respectiv&y. Thus the flaps la, 2b, 3a, 4c wifi automatically form a side wali of the carton when a user pulls the panels 1, 2, 3, 4 into their erected position. Products are inserted into the carton which is then closed by gluing together the flaps Ia, 2a, 3a, 4a to form the other side wall.
1100211 In the cartons formed from the blanks of Figures 1 and 2, the side walls formed from the flaps are both shaped as paraflelograms having equal acute angles between the base panel 1 and die front panel 2 and between the top panel 3 and the rear panel 4, and supplementary obtuse angles between the front panel 2 and the top panel 3 and between the base panel 1 and the rear panel 4, where the slot 7 is located.
[00221 Figures 3, 4 and 5 are applicable to cartons formed from the blanks of Figures 1 and 2. Figure 3 shows how the prop parts 9, 10 are folded away from the base panel 1, the first prop part 9 being folded downwardly and rearwardly towards the second prop part 10. Next, as shown in Figure 4, the tab 11 is inserted into the slot 12, to form a V-shaped prop from the prop parts 9, 10. The carton can now he placed on a shelf and appears as shown in Figure 5.
[0023] The removable part is removed by tearing along the tine of perforations 12.
The opened carton is seen empty in Figure 6.
[0024] The carton may for example contain cylindrical products such as packets of biscuits, arranged to roll down towards the front of the carton for display and removal. Sloping divider panels may be provided between layers of the products.
[00251 The invention provides an elegant and robust improvement on known "shelf-ready packs".
