Abstract

A wrist bridge 14 for a cyclist comprises an extension 19 solely to cover the crook 5 of the wrist formed between the lower arm 6 and the metacarpal 8 of the small finger when the cyclist is in a riding position. The wrist bridge is preferably worn by a cyclist in a riding position using drop handle bars (3, figure 1) with the extension generally facing in-board of the cyclist. Use of the wrist bridge may have a significant impact on the drag arising at the base of the torso and top of the leg of a cyclist.

Description

Wrist Bridge for Cyclists [0001] This invention relates to wrist bridges for primarHy cyclists.
[0002] The inventors have now found that the shape and configuration of a wrist bridge can have a significant impact on the drag arising at the base of the torso and top of the leg of a cyclist.
[0003] According to the present invention a wrist bridge has an extension solely to cover the crook of the wrist formed between the lower arm and the metacarpal of the smaH finger, when in a riding position.
[0004] When worn by a cyclist in a riding position using drop handle-bars on a cycle the extension is generally facing in-board of the cyclist.
[0005] It has been found that with a wrist bridge of the invention, there is reduced stagnation on the legs and a change in flow structure resulting in a drag reduction for the cyclist.
[0006] Results of tests on a particular cyclist model with the leg in an intermediate position on the forward pedal have shown that for the cyclist not wearing a wrist bridge, the drag on one leg position was 41.4 Newtons. When a bridge according to the invention was used the drag reduced to 40.0 Newtons a saving of 3.4%. In contrast some other wrist bridges tested, with no extension as described, increased drag by 1.5 Newtons (3.6%).
The improvement in drag as a result of use of a wrist bridge of the present invention compared with one made with little regard to the invention was 6.8%. In the latter case the bridge extended from the wrist to the metacarpal of all the fingers and the thumb.
[0007] The specific improvement made in any particular circumstance will depend on the relative position of the leg to that of the wrist of a cyclist. However, it has been found that drag reductions are achieved whatever the position of the legs in their cycle of movement.
[0008] In order that the invention may be more fully understood, it is illustrated with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: [0009] Figure 1 illustrates a cyclist wearing a wrist bridge on a drop handle-bar cycle; [0010] Figure 2 illustrates a wrist bridge according to the invention; and [0011] Figure 3 illustrates a wrist bridge not according to the invention and not designed according to the principles of the current invention.
[0012] In figure 1 a cyclist I is shown on a cycle 2 with drop-handle bars 3 of the kind used for sprinting and tong distance racing. The cyclist is wearing wrist bridges 4. It will be seen that in gripping the handle-bars, a crook 5 is formed at the wrist between the lower arm 6 and the hand 7.
[0013] In figure 2 a wrist bridge 14 according to the invention is shown. It cover the wrist, but has an extension piece 19 extending over the carpels of the small finger to the metacarpal 8 of the small finger, so covering the croo5 5 formed between the lower arm 6 and hand 7 as the cyclist grips the handle bars of the cycle.
[0014] In figure 3, by contrast, a wrist bridge not according to the invention is shown. It is as wide (from top to bottom) as practical. The bridge cover the wrist of the cyclist including crook 5, but instead of an extension covering the carpel of the small finger, it extend to cover the carpels of all the fingers. Although this would appear to be the obvious design for a wrist bridge, the wrist bride according to the invention and illustrated in figure 2, surprisingly, reduces drag on the legs of the cyclist, whereas this design increases drag when compared to a cyclist not wearing a wrist bridge.
