Abstract

A kettle includes an electric heater 3 fixed to a base plate 2 of a water container and a temperature sensing probe mounted through a wall or base of the container. The probe includes a heat transferring structure 6 in direct thermal contact with and wet by the liquid inside the container. An electrical sensor 4 within the probe is in thermal contact with the heat transfer structure and has electrical properties which directly correlate with its temperature. The heat transferring structure is attached to a supporting structure 5, possibly made from a poor heat conductor, mounted to the wall or base by an elastomeric thermal insulating material 15 held in compression to provide physical support for the probe and to seal the wall from leaking. Thermal insulation 11 may seal the sensor in the probe. The sensor is thus thermally insulated from the wall, heater and air and is responsive to water temperature.
