Abstract

A stopper 10 is disclosed for preventing a door or drawer from closing. The stopper 10 comprises a catch 15which is arranged to retractably extend from a catch support 13 and which is biased away from the support. The catch comprises a distal end 15b having a leading edge and a trailing edge with respect to the opening and closing directions of the door or drawer, wherein a separation of the leading edge of the catch from the support is less than a separation of the trailing edge of the catch from the support, when opening the door, and a separation of the leading edge of the catch from the support is greater than a separation of the trailing edge of the catch from the support, when closing the door. The stopper is intended to prevent the accidental closure of the drawer on the fingers or hands of a user. The catch may be lockable in a retracted position. The stopper may have an actuator for repositioning the catch.

Description

A Stopper The present invention relates to a stopper for preventing a door or drawer from closing.
It is well known that children open drawers and doors, and often close the resulting drawer or door while grasping the drawer or door around a portion of the drawer or door periphery. This typically results in the child jamming or otherwise trapping their fingers and/or hands between the drawer or door and the respective frame.
I have now devised a stopper which alleviates the above mentioned problem.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a stopper for preventing a door or drawer from closing! the stopper comprising a catch which is arranged to retractably extend from a catch support and which is biased away from the support, the catch comprising a distal end having a leading edge and a trailing edge with respect to the opening and closing directions of the door or drawer, wherein, a separation of the leading edge of the catch from the support is less than a separation of the trailing edge of the catch from the support, when opening the door, and, a separation of the leading edge of the catch from the housing is greater than a separation of the trailing edge of the catch from the housing, when closing the door.
Advantageously, the catch of the stopper is arranged to adopt the extended configuration upon opening the door or drawer, in which the catch extends beyond a periphery of the door or drawer, to prevent the door or drawer from subsequently completely closing within a respective frame. The stopper thus minimises the possibility of a child from trapping their fingers between a door or drawer and the respective frame as the door or drawer closes. The device further prevents a door from automatically closing and thus minimises the possibility of a person becoming locked out from a room,
for example.
Preferably, the distal end of the catch permits the door or drawer to open but prevents the door or drawer from fully closing.
Preferably, the device further comprises means for mounting the device upon a door or drawer. The means is preferably disposed upon the catch support and may comprise an adhesive portion and/or a plurality of apertures for receiving fasteners.
The catch support preferably comprises a housing and the catch is preferably biased out from the housing toward a frame of the door or drawer by a spring.
The catch is preferably lockable in a retracted configuration, in which the catch extends substantially within the housing.
Preferably, the device further comprises an actuator for repositioning the catch with respect to the catch support.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stopper according to a first embodiment of the present invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the stopper illustrated in figure 1 mounted upon a door; Figure 3 is a perspective view of a stopper according to a second embodiment of the present invention; and, Figure 4 is a perspective view of the stopper illustrated in figure 3 mounted upon a drawer.
Referring to figures 1 and 2 of the drawings there is illustrated a stopper 10 according to a first embodiment of the present invention for preventing a door 11 from fully closing and thus for minimising a persons fingers from becoming trapped between the door 11 and the doorfranie 12 asthe door 11 closes.
The stopper 10 comprises a housing 13 secured upon or otherwise formed integrally with a mounting plate 14. The stopper 10 further comprises a catch 15 which is arranged to retractably extend from the housing 13 and is biased out from the housing 13 by a spring 16 disposed therein.
The catch 15 comprises a proximal end isa which is arranged to contact the spring 16 and is arranged to remain in the housing 13 for all extensions of the catch 15 out from the housing 13. The distal end iSb of the catch 15 comprises a substantially planar distal end face 17 which is inclined at an acute angle with respect to a longitudinal axis of the catch 15. In this respect, the distal end face 17 comprises a first edge 17a, which is separated from the housing 13 by a distance which is less that a second edge 17b of the distal end face 17.
The stopper 10 further comprises an actuator 18 which is coupled with the catch and is arranged to extend through a slot 19 disposed within an upper wall 13a of the housing 13. The actuator 18 enables a user (not shown) to manipulate the catch 15 from the side of the door frame 12, for example an interior side, which is opposite the side of door frame, for example an exterior side, which the catch 15 is arranged to abut to prevent the door ii from fully closing. The portion 18a of the actuator 18 which extends within the slot 19 is also arranged to limit the movement of the catch 13 within the housing to prevent the catch 15 from moving completely out from the housing 13. The slot 19 is arranged to extend substantially longitudinally of the housing 13 such that a user (not shown) can move the catch 15 relative to the housing 13 by moving the actuator 18 along the slot 19. It is to be appreciated however, that the catch 15 may further comprise one or more flanges (not shown in figures 1 and 2), which extend from a proximal end isa of the catch 15, to limit the extension of the catch 15 from the housing 13.
Referring to figure 2 of the drawings, in use, the stopper 10 is secured proximate a periphery of a door 11 by passing fasteners (not shown) for example, through apertures 20 disposed in the mounting plate 14, into the door face ha. Alternatively, the stopper 10 may be secured by removing a backing sheet (not shown) to an adhesive layer (not shown) disposed at the underside of the mounting plate 14, for example.
The stopper 10 is arranged to be positioned at the periphery of the door ii, for example at the side of the door hi which is opposite the side about which the door 11 can pivot to open and close, so that the catch 15 can extend from the housing 13 beyond the outer periphery of the door 11 and engage with a door frame 12. It is to be appreciated however, that the stopper 10 may also be positioned proximate an upper region of the door, to minimise any manipulation of the stopper 10 by young children.
The catch 15 is orientated with respect to the housing 13 and the door 11 such that the first edge 1 7a is arranged to be the leading edge of the distal end face 17 as the door ii is opened. Accordingly, the distal end face 17 of the stopper 10 is declined in the direction in which the door ii is arranged to open, such that the catch 15 can easily slide over the door frame 12 and any undulations disposed thereon, as the door ii is opened, by moving in and out of the housing 13. Once the door 11 has opened sufficiently such that the stopper 10 extends out of the plane of the frame 12, the catch is arranged to fully extend from the housing 13 under the bias of the spring 16.
Upon subsequently closing the door 11, the second edge 1 7b is arranged to be the leading edge of the distal end face 17, such that the distal end face 17 of the catch is inclined in the closing direction, and the extension of the catch 15 from the housing 13 is arranged to abut an exterior 12a of the door frame 12. The inclined orientation of the distal end face 17 when closing the door 11 is arranged to resist any movement of the catch 15 into the housing 13 and thus prevent the door 11 from fully closing and thus trapping a persons fingers (not shown) between the door 11 and door frame 12.
In order to subsequently close the door 11 a user (not shown) is required to manipulate the catch 15, either directly, or using the actuator 18 for example, to move the catch 18 into the housing 13, so that the catch 15 can pass within the door frame 12.
Referring to figures 3 and 4 of the drawings, there is illustrated a stopper 100 according to a second embodiment of the present invention for preventing a drawer 111 from fully closing and thus for minimising a persons fingers (not shown) from becoming trapped between the drawer 111 and a drawerframe 112 as the drawer 111 closes. The stopper 100 according to the second embodiment is substantially the same as the stopper of the first embodiment and so like features have been referenced using the same numerals, but increased by 100.
The stopper of the second embodiment however does not comprise an actuator for manipulating the catch 115. Accordingly, in order to prevent the catch 115 of the second embodiment from moving completely out from the housing 113 a proximal end lisa of the catch 115 comprises a flange uSc which is arranged to abut a detent (not shown) within the housing 113 to limit the extension of the catch 115 from the housing 113. The flange 11 Sc is illustrated in figure 3 as extending from an edge of the catch 115 at the proximal end lOSa thereof, however it is to be appreciated that the flange uSc may extend from one or more of the edges at the proximal end lisa of the catch 115.
The stopper 100 of the second embodiment is arranged to be fixed upon an interior surface of a front panel 121 of a drawer iii, using fasteners (not shown) and/or an adhesive sheet (not shown) as described above, and orientated such that the catch can retractably extend out from the drawer iii, within the housing 113. The catch 116 is orientated with respect to the housing 113 and the drawer iii such that the first edge ii 7a is arranged to be the leading edge of the distal end face 117 as the door 11 is opened. In this respect, the distal end face 117 of the stopper 100 is declined in the direction in which the drawer 111 is arranged to open, such that the catch 115 can easily slide overthe drawerframe 112, as the drawer 111 is opened. Once the drawer 111 has opened sufficiently such that the stopper 100 extends out of the plane of the frame 112, the catch 115 is arranged to extend from the housing 113 and thus the drawer lii, under the bias of the spring iii.
Upon subsequently closing the drawer 111, the second edge 11 7b is arranged to be the leading edge of the distal end face 117 as the door 11 is opened, such that the distal end lace 117 of the catch 115 is inclined in the closing direction, and the extension of the catch 115 from the housing 113 is arranged to abut an exterior of the drawer frame 112. The inclined orientation of the distal end face 117 when closing the drawer ill is arranged to resist any movement of the catch 115 into the housing 113 and thus prevent the drawer 111 from fully closing and thus trapping a persons fingers (not shown) between the drawer 111 and the frame 112.
In order to subsequently close the drawer 111 a user (not shown) is required to manipulate the catch directly by pushing upon the distal end face 117 of the catch 115, to cause the catch 115 to move into the housing 113, so that the catch 115 can pass under the drawer frame 112. Once the drawer 111 has been fully closed, the catch 115 is arranged to extend from the housing, but the flange usc is arranged to limit the extent of the catch 115 from the housing 113, so that the first edge 117a extends within the plane of the opening of the housing 113. This ensures that only the distal end face 117 is permitted to extend from the housing 113 to strike the drawer frame 112, so that the catch 115 can move into the housing 113 as the drawer 111 becomes opened.
If required, the stoppers 10, 100 of the first and second embodiment may further comprise locking means (not shown) for selectively and releasably locking the catch 15, within the respective housing 13, 113. It is envisaged that the catch 15, 115 may be released when it is desired to prevent any unintentional closing of doors 11 and drawers 111, for example when children are present within a room or building.
From the foregoing therefore, it is evident that the stopper of the present invention provides for a simple yet effective means of preventing a person from jamming their fingers or hands between a door or drawer and a respective frame.
