Abstract

The medicines spoon is comprised of the spoon head and spoon handle. The spoon handle is comprised of a hollow barrel in which a 2nd solid cylinder fits. The outer barrel has a "window" cut out of it so that the user can see the internal cylinder inside the outer barrel. The internal cylinder has markings on it which describe the time that the medication has been given and the time the next dose is due, or in which period another dose should not be given (use figure 1). The solid internal cylinder can be rotated by the user inside the external barrel to show the time that the dose has been given. The user can then see when the next dose is due, or the time in which another dose can be given (use figure 2).

Description

Medicines spoon
Description Title
Medicines spoon.
Background
This invention relates to a novel medicine spoon which contains and integrated safety mechanism in the handle of the spoon that reduces the risk of accidental overdose.
People often have difficulty in remembering when to take their medicines. Sometimes they may take doses too soon after the previous dose, or too many doses in a day leading to an accidental overdose. This is especially important in the paediatric setting. Parents can easily overdose their children especially when the child is taking several medicines and several care givers are involved in giving the child their medicine, or when several children in the same hoUsehold are ill at the same time.
Statement of invention
The medicines safety spoon is comprised of the spoon head and spoon handle. The spoon handle is comprised of a hollow barrel in which a 2nd solid cylinder fits. The outer barrel has a "window" cut out of it so that the user can see the internal cylinder inside the outer barrel. The internal cylinder has markings on it which describe the time that the medication has been given and the time the next dose is due, or in which period another dose should not be given (see figure 1).
The spoon is composed of the spoon head (a) and spoon handle (b).
The solid internal cylinder can be rotated by the user inside the external barrel to show the time that the dose has been given. The user can then see when the next dose is due, or the time in which another dose can be given (see figure 2).
The user rotates the tip of the spoon handle (c) on the spoon handle (b). The internal cylinder rotates to show the time that the dose has been given in window (d) and the time that the next dose is due in window (e).
Most medicines are given twice, three, orfourtimes a day. It is therefore intended that 3 different internal cylinders be produced with embossed timings on reflecting the different dosing regimes (see figures 3,4 and 5). The relevant internal cylinder will be fitted into the barrel of the spoon handle, for example a twice a day medicine will be fitted with the cylinder depicted in figure 3, a three times a day medicine fitted with the cylinder depicted in figure 4 and a four times a day medicine fitted with the cylinder depicted in figure 5.
It is intended that the above is a low cost product produced from plastic that complies with the relevant legislation.
Adva ntages This integrated safety mechanism in the medicines spoon handle significantly reduces the chances of accidental overdose by the user.
