Abstract

A riding shoe wherein the sole of the shoe is provided with treads c that are inclined to facilitate movement of the shoe in a rearward direction off a stirrup upon which the shoe is resting. The treads c may be inclined so that they slope upwardly towards the rear of the shoe. A heel portion may also be provided which has treads which are deeper than those on the sole of the shoe. Disclosed in a second invention is a shoe wherein the treads of the heel are deeper than those on a sole of the shoe. The increased depth of the heel treads is provided to prevent slipping on the ground without effecting the engagement with the stirrup.

Description

RIDING SHOES
Field of the Invention
This invention re'ates to riding shoes, i.e. to footwear worn by horse riders. The term "riding shoes" as used herein thus includes riding boots.
One of the problems that has been encountered with riding shoes is that, if the tread is minimal, the wearer of the riding shoes may slip over when walking or running over muddy ground.
Another problem that has been encountered with riding shoes is that, if the tread is not minimal, there is a possibility that, if the rider should become unseated or if there is some other incident, the rider's toot may become stuck in the stirrup.
It is accordingly an object of the present invention to provide an improved form of riding shoe which releases safely from the stirrup but provides grip when walking.
Summary of the Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a riding shoe the sole of which is provided with treads and in which the surfaces of some at least of the treads on the sole of the shoe are so inclined as to facilitate movement of the shoe rearwardly relative to a stirrup on which the sole of the shoe is resting.
Some at least of the treads on the heel of the shoe preferably have a depth that is greater than the depths of the treads on the sole of the shoe.
AU (or substantially all) of the treads on the heel of the shoe may have depths greater than the depths of the treads on the sole of the shoe.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a riding shoe the sole and the heei of which are provided with treads and in which some at least of the treads on the heel of the shoe have a depth that is greater than the depths of the treads on the sole of the shoe.
As mentioned above, all (or substantiafly all) of the treads on the heel of the shoe may have depths greater than the depths of the treads on the sole of the shoe.
Brief Description of the Drawings
Figure 1 is a schematic sectional view of the under portion of a riding shoe, and Figure 2 is a perspective view of the underneath of a riding shoe.
Description of the Preferred Embodiment
The riding shoe shown in the drawings includes a sole and a heel, both of which are formed with treads. The treads on the sole of the shoe are arranged in two rows, one on each side of the sole.
Each tread has a substantially vertical surface a, a ground-engaging surface b and a surface c that is closest to the heel of the shoe and is inclined, such inclination being typically an inclination of at least 45° to the normal. The arrangement is thus such that, when the sole of the shoe is resting on a stirrup, movement of the sole of the shoe rearwardly relative to the stirrup, i.e. in the direction indicated by the large arrow in Figure 1, is permitted. At the same time, however, the treads on the sole of the shoe serve to resist movement of the shoe forwardly relative to the stirrup.
As can be seen particularly from Figure 1, the treads on the heel of the shoe are substantially deeper than the treads on the sole of the shoe. The greater depth treads on the heel provide enhanced grip without any increase in resistance to release movement of the shoe relative to the stirrup. The likelihood of the rider slipping when walking on muddy or otherwise slippery ground is thus reduced.
As can be seen particularly from Figure 2, which shows a real tread pattern, the tread pattern on the sole has been designed so that the sole does not grip to the stirrup when the shoe moves in the release direction, thus avoiding the possibility of the rider's foot getting stuck in the stirrup in the event of a fall.
Because the underside of the heel is never in contact with the stirrup, the treads on the heel have been designed to provide a much deeper impression, resulting in the obtaining of a strong grip on any terrain.
