Abstract

The invention relates to a water splash panel (10 figure 1) for a sink unit 12, for minimising the passage of water behind the unit onto an adjacent wall 13. The panel comprises a foot panel portion 14 which extends upon an upper surface of the sink unit in a first plane, and a body panel portion which extends in a second plane between the foot and the wall, and which is arranged to slope away from the wall in a direction which is from the wall to the foot portion. The splash panel may comprise a head panel 16 in a third plane. The foot portion may comprise a seal (19 figure 3) arranged along the edge of the foot panel to provide a water seal between the panel and the upper surface of the unit. The head panel portion may also comprise a seal (20 figure 2) which extends along a rear face portion to provide a seal between the panel and the wall.

Description

Water Stop Panel The present invention relates to a water stop panel.
When washing items within a sink for example it is common for water to splash or otherwise pass behind the unit onto an adjacent wall. This can stain the wall and over a prolonged period, the continuous wetting of the wall can cause the wall plaster to fall from the wall. Accordingly, so-called splash-back panels have been proposed in which the panels are arranged to extend upon the wall to prevent the water from passing onto the wall.
These splash-back panels are typically positioned upon the sink unit behind the taps, and inclined relative to the wall so that one edge of the panel rests upon the wall while the opposite edge of the channel rests upon an upper surface of the sink unit.
Modern on-set sinks however, typically comprise a peripherally extending flange which extends upwardly from the sink unit to minimise any water from passing off the sink unit.
The taps associated with the unit are often sited in close proximity to the flange with the result, that it is difficult to suitably position a splash-back panel upon the unit, behind the taps, so that the panel can extend toward the adjacent wall.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a water stop panel for a sink unit for minim ising the passage of water behind the unit onto an adjacent wall, the panel comprising a foot panel portion which is arranged to extend upon an upper surface of the sink unit in a first plane, and a body panel portion which is arranged to extend in a second plane between the foot and the wall, and which is arranged to slope away from the wall in a direction which is from the wall to the foot portion.
Advantageously, the angular nature of the foot panel with respect to the body panel enables the water stop panel to suitably locate upon an upper surface of the sink unit between taps associated with the sink unit and a rear flange of the unit, while also extending to the wall.
The loot panel portion prelerably comprises a seal which is arranged to extend along a distal edge ol the loot panel to provide a water seal between the panel and the upper surface ol the unit. Prelerably, the seal is arranged to extend around the distal edge between a lront and rear lace ol the loot panel portion.
The water stop panel prelerably lurther comprises a head panel portion which is arranged in a third plane against the wall. Prelerably, the lirst and third planes are substantially parallel planes, and are prelerably parallel with a plane ol the wall.
Prelerably, the loot panel portion, the head panel portion and the body panel portion are substantially planar portions.
Prelerably, the head panel portion comprises a seal which extends along a rear lace portion thereol to provide a water seal between the panel and the wall.
The seal on the head panel portion and the seal on the loot panel portion prelerably comprise a rubber material.
Prelerably, the head panel portion, the loot panel portion and the body panel portion are lormed integrally, and prelerably lormed ol a material which is substantially resistant to corrosion, such as stainless steel or plastic.
An embodiment ol the present invention will now be described by way ol example only and with relerence to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view ol the water stop panel according to an embodiment ol the present invention, lrom the Iront; Figure 2 is a perspective view ol the water stop panel according to an embodiment ol the present invention, lrom the rear; Figure 3 is an exploded magnilied view ol the distal edge ol the loot panel portion and the seal; and, Figure 4 is a perspective view of the water stop panel illustrated in figure 1 in situ upon a sink unit.
Referring to figures 1 to 4 of the drawings, there is illustrated a water stop panel 10 according to an embodiment of the present invention. The panel 10 is arranged to extend behind the taps 11 associated with a sink unit 12 and extend upwardly toward an adjacent wall 13 to provide a water barrier, to thereby minimise any water from passing behind the unit 12 onto the wall 13.
The water stop panel 10 comprises a substantially planar foot panel portion 14, a substantially planar body panel portion 15 and a substantially planar head panel portion 16, which may be formed integrally or otherwise coupled together to form a continuous panel 10. The foot panel portion 14 is substantially rectangular in shape and comprises a longitudinally extending distal edge 17 which is arranged to extend upon an upper surface 12a of the sink unit 12. The head panel portion 16 is similarly rectangular in shape and comprises a longitudinally extending distal edge 18. The proximal edges of the foot and head panel portions 14, 16, namely the edge opposite the respective longitudinal edge 17, 18, forms the opposite longitudinal edges of the body panel portion 15, such that the body portion 15 extend between the foot and head panel portions 14, 16.
The foot and head panel portions 14, 16 are arranged to extend in substantially parallel, but different planes and the body panel 15 is arranged to extend in a plane which bisects the plane of the foot and head panel portions 14, 16, such that the resulting water stop panel 10 is substantially S-shaped in cross-section.
The distal edge 17 of the foot panel portion 14 comprises a seal 19 which extends along the length thereof and which extends around the distal edge 17 between a front and rear face 14a, 14b thereof to provide a seal between the panel 10 and the upper surface 12a of the sink unit 12. A rear face 16b of the head panel portion 16, namely the face which is arranged to extend adjacent the wall 13, comprises a strip seal 20 which extends along the length thereof to form a seal between the head panel portion 16 and the wall 13, and thus minimise any water from passing downwardly between the wall 13 and the panel 10.
The seal 19, 20 disposed upon the loot and head panel portions 14, 16 may be lormed ol a rubber or loam material so that the seal can compress and conlorm with any undulations or surface imperfections on the sink unit 12a and/or wall 13, and thus provide the required sealing.
The angular nature ol the body panel portion 15 with respect to the loot panel portion 14 enables the water stop panel 10 to suitably locate upon the upper surface 12a olthe unit 12, while enabling the body panel 15 to suitably extend over any llange 21 which may extend around the sink unit, to provide a suitable slope br any water which passes onto the body portion 15 (or head portion 16) to drain off the panel 10 onto the sink unit 12.
