Abstract

This application is concerned with communication using coordinated multi-point transmission (CoMP). A user equipment (UE) receives a first transmission from a first transmission point (e.g. a base station) and a second transmission from a second transmission point and determines the propagation delay variation between the two transmissions. In one embodiment the UE reports the propagation delay variation information to the first transmission point or to a network manager for controlling the transmission points. The received propagation delay variation information is then evaluated and used to determine whether the second transmission point is acceptable as a participant in a cooperative multi-point joint processing transmission to the UE. Alternatively, the UE may itself determine whether the propagation delay experienced by the second transmission point is excessive, and report such to the network manager. In another embodiment, a determination of propagation delay variation is made for each of a plurality of pairs of transmission points and the UE may report when the overall spread in propagation delay variation is excessive. In yet another embodiment propagation delay variation measurements may be made on a received CoMP joint processing transmission to confirm whether the propagation delay variations lie within acceptable limits.
