Abstract

The carcass repair jig 1 for European and Blum-type hinges includes a rigid frame 2 which locates a drilling bush 3 and Forstner bit 4 perpendicular to the contact surface of the frame and carcass surface. The frame 2 may be removed and rotated to drill offset holes. A recess may be machined into the contact face of the jig to allow alignment with pre-made marks on the carcass. The jig may be attached to the carcass by clamps or double-sided tape. Pre-drilled plugs may be glued into the carcass holes produced by the jig.

Description

Carcass repair jig for European and Blum type Binges This invention relates to a device for repairing cupboard carcasses which have been fitted with European and Blurn type hinges.
These hinges are fitted to cupboard carcasses using short coarse thread screws. These screws are prone to being pulled out of the carcass by loads placed on the doors. When the screws pull out they remove the adjacent carcass material at best, but often tear out a significant amount of carcass material around the screw hole. This makes repairs very difficult.
Because the carcasses are fitted, replacement would be expensive, disruptive and time consuming. This device allows repairs to be made in situ by replacing the damaged area with a pre drilled plug of similar material.
Figure 1 shows the device from the "Non contact face" side with the Forstner bit drive end protruding from the rotatable centre section. This section can be removed and rotated 180 degrees.
Figure 2 shows the device from the "Contact face" side with the Forstner bit cutting end protruding from the rotatable centre section.
Figure 3 shows an exploded view of the device from the "Non contact face" side with the Forstner bit drive end protruding from the rotatable centre section.
Figure 4 shows an exploded view of the device from the "Contact face" side with the Forstner bit cutting end protruding from the rotatable centre section.
Figure 5 shows the device fitted to the cupboard carcass in the top hinge position.
Figure 6 shows the drilled cupboard carcass and pre drilled plugs in the insertion position.
In figure 1 a drill bush 3 corresponding to the shank diameter of the Forstner bit 4 is located tightly in a rotatable rigid section 2. This bush fit will be sized to ensure minimum lateral movement of the Fostner bit. This rotatable section positions the bush perpendicular to the contact face of the jig and hence the carcass. This ensures that the Forstner bit will drill an hole square to the face of the carcass. The rotatable section is located to the main frame I by means of four thumb screws 5. This would allow the section 2 to be removed and rotated without removing the main body I from the carcass. Any attaching method could be used to allow easy rotation of the rotatable section.
The bush 3 is located along the longitudinal centre line of the rotatable section 2. It will be offset from the rotatable section lateral centre line, such that rotating the section 180 degrees will result in a second hole in the same longitudinal plane a distance of twice the offset from the first. The device will be constructed such that the distance between the longitudinal centre line and the edge of the main frame 1 corresponds to the offset of the carcass holes from the front edge of the cupboard carcass.
The Forstner bit 3 will have a quick release hexagonal head in order to facilitate an easy drill attachment to it.
In figure 2 the main frame 1 is machined with a rounded vertical recess in order to accept the Forstner bit 4 cutting head in both the cutting positions. The recess will allow cutting bits up to 35mm diameter.
Slots will be machined horizontally from each side of the frame to meet this rounded recess. One side of the slot will correspond to the axial centre line of the Forstner bit. The other side of the slot will correspond to the axial centre line of the Forstner bit in the rotated position. This ensures that the device can be easily aligned with the holes to be repaired.
In figure 3 the device is shown with the rotatable section 2 withdrawn from the main body 1. A recess is machined into the main body I to accept a matching part on the rotatable section 2. This ensures further rigidity to the assembled device. Screwed inserts 6 are located in the main body to accept the tbumbscrews 5.
In figure 4 the device is shown with the rotatable section 2 withdrawn from the main body 1. The matching part of the rotatable section 2 is shown more clearly. The recess in the main bodyl and the matching section on part 2 could be any shape which provided a positive location and prevents relative movement between the parts.
In figure 5 the device 1 is shown in position clamped or fixed with double sided tape level with the front face of the carcass side 5. The device is shown aligned with the top screw hole marking 7 on the carcass edge. The Forstner bit can then be used with the aid if an electric drill to make holes into the carcass thereby removing the damaged area. The rotating section can then be rotated 180 degrees to drill the second hole. This will ensure accurate spacing of the holes.
In figure 4 pre drilled plugs 6 can be glued flush into the holes 7.
