Abstract
A self adhesive catch member that is self aligning for initial installation and once fitted will allow the joined components to be easily removed and refitted at any time. Used for installing components that are pre-finished and must not be damaged or fixed through their face that is seen in use. The hidden self adhesive catch member is used to allow pre-assembly of the catch to solve alignment problems.
Description
I
$elf adhesive catch member Bickground Plastics and their derivatives in the form of mouldings now feature in many construction applications. Advantages of plastics are many, theft durability, moisture resistance and surface finish being particularly important. It is easy to permanently fix these plastics without damage to their finish if they do not need to be removed again, they can be fixed with adhesives. However, problems occur when the plastic mouldings have to be periodically removed. The presence of visible fixings such as screw heads or plastic screw caps is in general unacceptable to occupiers. The fixing needs to be positive in action with the ability to hold in place a heavy moulding that may be subject to kicks and knocks, therefore such products as magnetic catches and Velcro are unsuitable. A means of positive fixing which is also aesthetically acceptable is needed when plastic mouldings have to be removed for maintenance purposes. The major difficulty with any form of unseen fixing is how to align the two parts of the fixing as they are of course concealed behind the item being fixed e.g. the two parts of a magnetic catch must align precisely to* achieve a bond, this is usually carried out by trial and error. The same difficulties apply to the use of clips, slots, rebates, rails and recesses when attempting to positively secure a moulding or panel.
There is a need for an unseen method of positively fixing mouldings or panels without causing damage to finished surfaces and yet this product must be easy to install and furthermore must allow the skirting to be periodically removed and replaced as necessary.
Statement of invention
To overcome this problem this invention proposes a self adhesive catch member that has self adhesive and/or mechanical fixing to a plastic moulding or panel so that no fixings need to penetrate the seen in use face of the plastic. Installation is carried out with the catch already fitted together which removes any alignment problems. Both parts are adjustable during fitting and also have tolerance when they are mated together, once fitted the catch allows for easy removal and replacement of the moulding. Final fitment is by adhesive between a self adhesive area and the plastic. Once fitted the self adhesive catch member remains adhered to the plastic moulding or panel, any future removal of the plastic uses the catch in a conventional manner.
Advantags No damage to the fmished surfaces of the moulding or panel that is being fixed in place.
The product is simple to use.
This product provides a method of unseen fixing that removes the problem of tying to align two parts of a catch that are unseen. The self adhesive feature provides precise alignment of the two parts.
The self alignment is essential for large panels and long lengths of mouldings that may require multiple fixings.
Unseen fixings are aesthetically acceptable to occupiers.
A quick and easy way to provide a positive and secure unseen fixing.
The self adhesive catch member allows adjustment in all three axes: vertically, horizontally and for depth by adding additional layers of adhesive tape to allow for different thicknesses of mouldings.
A positive mechanical fixing is provided, with a snap in action to confirm to operatives that the moulding/panel is secured.
The catch allows unlimited removal and replacement of moulding/panel without damage to building finishes or the moulding.
Introduction to drawinj
M example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a line drawing to show the self adhesive catch member, Figure 2 is a cross sectional drawing to show the self adhesive catch member fitted to a ball catch; and Figure 3 is a line drawing to show the member in use with a roller catch; and Figure 4 is a line drawing to show the member in use with a gripper catch.
Detailed description
Figure 1 is a line drawing to show the self adhesive catch member The member is composed of part A which is the male part of a catch and part B which is a self adhesive pad. The self adhesive pads B are used to adhere to the rear face of the item to be fixed, so that no fixing is needed through the seen face of the fmished moulding or panel. The self adhesive member is shown as rectangular in the line drawing but can be any suitable shape.
The male part A fits into the receptor part of any other type of catch for example single ball catches, double ball catches, roller catches, friction catches, gripper catches and any other type of catch that uses a male fitment. Importantly for the self adhesive catch member the width of the part A as shown in the line drawing serves two purposes: -it allows lateral adjustment when the two parts are fitted together; and -the width allows for a large area of self adhesive pad B to be used to secure the part A to the back of the item that is being installed.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional drawing showing the self adhesive catch member used with a double ball catch. The two parts of the catch are shown as fitted together. The double ball catch receptor C is fitted to the building structure shown as E. The self adhesive catch member A is inserted into the double ball catch and is held in place by balls shown as B. The cover film is then removed from the self adhesive pad B and the item to be fixed F is aligned and then pressed into place against pad B. The size and shape of the area of part A which takes the self adhesive pad B can be adjusted to suite specific requirements of individual applications. Subsequent removal of item F is allowed by the Balls B releasing catch member A and the alignment is retained for replacement of F against the structure E. Figure 3 Is a line drawing to show the self adhesive catch member A in use with a roller catch G as the receptor. The roller catch receptor 0 is fixed to the building structure. The part A is inserted into the Rollers H and the self adhesive pads B are fitted to A. The item to be fixed can then be pushed into position against the structure and it will be fixed onto the pads B. At this stage, if the item does not adhere to the pads B it will be because the pads are not far enough away from the face of the structure to contact the back face of the item, the simple solution is to add a further layer of pads B and retry. The installation uses any type of catch as already assembled and so removes the problems associated with alignment of unseen/hiddenlsecret fixings. The large surface area of the part A with the self adhesive pads ensures that when the item is removed from the wall the break will occur at the catch between parts A and H. Subsequent replacement of the item is just a matter of repositioning the item and pushing it towards the wall, the catch will provide a positive fitment. The width of part A gives increased lateral tolerance when refitting the item.
Figure 4 is a line drawing to show another example of the self adhesive catch member in use. The member A is shown used with a gripper catch receptor J. The receptor has adjustable holes K to enable fitment to the building structure. The pad B will hold the item to be fixed. Lateral adjustment is given by the width of part A.
