Abstract
The present invention relates to the field of domestic and commercial mobile electric floor treatment machines. The invention relates in particular to providing a mode of operation in an appliance, such as a vacuum cleaner, which reduces energy consumption. Thus there is disclosed a mobile floor treatment machine which relies upon electric motor power for its functioning, the appliance including electric power control means capable of permitting the appliance to operate in either a high power mode or a low power mode, the control means being provided with power switching means for controlling whether the high or low power modes is adopted, the switching means being configured so that when the appliance is activated by means of an on/off switch the machine operates by default in the low power mode and wherein a user-operable override switch is provided, actuation of which causes the power control means to adopt the high power mode, and wherein further actuation of the override switch causes the machine to revert to the low power mode, the power switching means being further configured so that in the event of the machine being turned-off when operating in the high power mode, the power control means defaults so as to operate in the low power mode when re-activated. The machine is preferably a vacuum cleaner for cleaning floor surfaces such as carpets. The machine always defaults to low power mode, so as to promote energy saving.
