Abstract

A web-based system that allows a user to book a berth in different marinas. A web server may (i) generate a web page that enables any person holding a berth at one of the marinas to access the server to indicate that his berth is available for use at a defined time and that (ii) enable the user to locate, book and pay for that berth, with a payment being made automatically to the person holding the berth. The web server may generate a web page that enables any person holding a berth at one of the marinas to access the server to indicate that his berth is available for use at a defined time. Prior art approaches require the mooring manager alone to indicate that specific berths (generally visitor berths) are available. But by enabling any berth holder to indicate that his berth is available for use, the number of available berths is vastly expanded.

Description

I
A WEB-BASED SYSTEM THAT ENABLES USERS TO BOOK BOAT BERTHS IN
MARINAS
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
1. FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates to a web-based system that allows a user to book a berth in any of several different marinas.
2. DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR ART
For the boat owner, there is a need to address the logistical stress of cruising, to reduce costs, improve administration and address marina inflexibility. Examples of the specific problems experienced by boat owners are given below. r
Boat owners currently suffer: * The significant increase in the cost of sailing, when a boat is away from its home berth, with boat owners pang for sitors mooring fees as well as annual permanent mooring fees. Since it is currently difficult claiming back mooring fees from marinas.
* The stress of entering a marina and not being certain of having a berth, paying for it and its facihties.
* The time consuming organisation and complexities of arranging events, regattas, cruises, races, open meetings, meetings, crews, sailing holidays using traditional methods such as email and the telephone.
* The limited availability of cruising schemes (sub-letting or visitor credits) which are only available from a small number of larger marina companies such as MDL, Premier and Quay Marinas (14% of UK marinas).
* The inflexibility of long term bookings, insomuch as if a berth is not taken due to weather conditions or crew illness, the sailor may incur a booking penalty or lose the entire amount.
* The safety of boat owners who may have a detailed passage plan however lack the platform to share it with friends, family and emergency services.
Similarly, mooring managers have issues with management, occupancy and the efficient use of their moorings: * Boat owners failing to inform marina offices that they are leaving to cruise, meaning that revenue cannot be generated from otherwise vacant and available berths.
* Boat owners booking a berth then not showing up, adding administration difficulty, and which in turn means that an earlier boat may have been turned away.
* Boats currently may enter a marina without adequate insurance, and other certificates required by some European ports. (The Waypoint will allow users to upload certificates and mooring managers will he able to view these onhne) * Smaller marinas and boatyards cannot introduce cruising schemes due to factors of scale.
* Personally owned moorings are seldom sub-let as the advertising and associated administration effort is too great.
* Reduced movement, cruising and use of boat by boat owners due to the difficulties and inflexibility of the current berthing systems.
A number of websites have been developed that seek to address in part some of these problems.
C However, none provide a comprehensive solution. For completeness, we list the ptior art web sites below.
The website www.Dockspot.com makes available a set of predefined berths at marinas in Sweden and Finland. These are visitor' berths -i.e. berths that are specifically set aside for the use of visitors booking through the website. Users of the site can book and pay for the berths online on the site. But the number of visitor berths is quite limited in most marinas.
The website www.portbooker.com provides a directory of marinas worldwide where users of the site can make reservations, book and pay for visitor berths for some of the matinas online. The site also offers other features in relation to the marina location, such as weather. But the number of visitor berths is quite limited in most marinas. It is also disadvantageous that the user cannot see which berth he would like to hook on a map before booking.
The website www.Marinas.com provides a directory of marinas worldwide. The site allows users to send a reservation request online for a visitor berth to a specific marina. The site does not allow the user to send hooking requests to all listed marinas. The site is disadvantageous since no actual hooking is made on the site and the marina has to respond manually, for instance over phone or mail, to the user confirming a possible booking and then taking the payment separately.
The website www.marinalife.com provides a directory of marinas where users of the site can make reservations for visitor berths online. The site also offers other features in relation to the marina location, such as weather.
The website www.findamarina.co.uk provides a directory of marinas in the UK. The user can request a reservation for a visitor berth through the site. The site is disadvantageous since no actual booking is made on the site and the marina has to respond manually, for instance over phone or mail, to the user confirming a possible booking and then taking the payment separately.
The \vebsite www.marinefuel.com provides a directory of marinas. Users can send reservation requests for visitor berths through a partner website. The site is disadvantageous since users cannot book directly on the site. c\J r + +
The websites wsw.marinasonhne.net, www.portfocus.com, www.berthsearch.com, v.safeberths.com and wv.worldmarinaguide.com provide directories of marinas for the user to search. The websites do not provide any onhne booking function. The sites are disadvantageous since users cannot hook directly on the site.
The websites www.usaboatslips.com and www.docksearch.com provide hstings of berths in marinas and privately held available to rent. Users of the site cannot book the berths directly on the site but rather use the contact details provided and arrange bookings offline. This is disadvantageous for the site's user and for the marina not being able to take bookings automatically.
The websites waw.saiingnetworks.com, www.yachtpals.com and www.sailnet.com, www.dockwalk.com provide vatious forms of social interaction for sailors. Some of the websites also provide directories of marinas. The sites are disadvantageous since users cannot book directly on the site.
As seen above, many websites have an online directory of marinas that allow visitor berths to be reserved and in some cases also booked. However, many of the directories have substantial gaps in the information and are often difficult to navigate and use. While several sites offer the opportunity to make a reservation request onhne which has to be confirmed by the marina or a booking agent, only two of the \vebsrtes offer the possibihtv of making an actual booking including payment, and these are restricted to booking visitor berths; in busy marinas, these can be quite limited in number and rapidly over-subscribed. The social network type sites focus on the social element only. None of the prior art websites therefore solves all of the specific problems currently experienced by boat owners and mooring managers.
The sailing and boat industry is both historic and prestigious and is vital to many communities across the United Kingdom, in North America (in particular around Florida and the Great Lakes) and Scandinavia. In the UK alone there are around 35,200 full time staff employed within the leisure and small commercial marine industry. With the wider economic benefit of the 223 coastal marinas in the UK resulting in up to QUO million value added contributions. The present invention aims to rejuvenate this market by opening communication channels and breaking down barriers between stakeholders. c\J r

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The invention is a web-based system that allows a user to book a berth in any of several different marinas, in which the system includes a web server that @) generates one or more web pages that enable any person holding a berth at one of the marinas to access the server to indicate that his berth is available for use at a defined time and that ii enables the user to locate, book and pay for that berth, with a payment being made automatically to the person holding the berth.
Holding a berth' is to be understood as meaning, for example, owning, renting, co-owning, timesharing, controlling a berth, having the right to allow a third party to use a berth. The owner of a berth hence holds' a berth. A mooring manager also holds' a berth.
The term marina' should he expansively construed to cover anywhere that boats or other kinds of \vater-based vessels (e.g. sea kayaks, jet skis etc.) can be moored or berthed; it hence includes large, purpose or custom-designed harbours designed for many boats, as well as simple moorings such as a single berth at the bottom of someone's garden. r
This approach differs from prior art web-based systems because, amongst other differences, the web server generates a web page that enables any person holding a berth at one of the marinas to access the server to indicate that his berth is available for use at a defined time. Prior art approaches require the mooring manager alone to indicate that specific berths (generally wsitor berths) are available. But by enabling any berth holder to indicate that his berth is available for use, the number of available berths is vastly expanded. By fully enabling a payment to the berth holder, the berth holder also benefits rapidly and is incentivised to share his berth without having to incur any significant investment in time or expense. The payment to the berth holder need not be the entire payment made by the user; in many cases revenue will be shared between the \vebsite, the marina and the berth holder.
Features in a preferred implementation include the following: The server is operable to provide a web site that includes web pages that * allow the user to search for berths available in multiple marinas by entering a search request into a web page generated by the server.
* allow the user to search for berths by entering a location into a location field in a web page generated by the server, and entering arrival and departure dates.
* (i) enable any person holding a berth at one of the marinas to indicate that his berth is available for use at a defined time and also that @i) enable the user to search for, book and pay for that berth.
* enable the person holding a berth at one of the marinas to indicate that his berth is available for use at a defined time solely by making a booking for his boat to use someone else's berth, leading automatically to his own berth being listed as vacant by the server.
* include a map that graphically shows search results, the map indicating which marina or marinas have berths available on a given date.
* allow the user to enter details of their own boat and the search results are then filtered so that only suitable berths are shown.
* provide a graphical map in response to a search request that includes a location in that map.
* enable the user to enter and to share a passage plan, including one or more marinas.
r * enable users to enter and to share a detailed passage plan, with berths that have been reliably booked, enhancing the safety of users at sea.
0 display weather based booking criteria for automated booking or cancellation of a berth 14) if a weather-specific criteria is met.
* enable the booking time of the berth to be variable, from short periods, such as one or more hours, up to long stays and permanent spaces.
* enable boat owners to provide insurance information or certificates to a marina before entry.
* enables peer to peer sharing of berths, namely between individuals that hold a berth and individuals that wish to book and pay for that berth.
* allows a visitor to that web page to select between the option of signing up or registering either (i) as a boat or berth owner or (ii) as a mooring manager.
* provide linking and/or tagging of specific berths and marinas to discussion forum discussions.
* enables the posting and sharing of passage plans to facilitate boat owners or crew to search for crew members or to facilitate crew members to search for boats.
The server may enable the payment made by the user automatically to be split * between the berth holder and an entity running the server, if the berth is not within a marina.
* between the marina and an entity running the server if the berth is part of a marina, and no third party is the holder of the berth or at least is not to benefit from the user's use of the berth.
* between an entity running the server, the marina and the berth holder if the berth is part of a marina and the berth is held by someone else than the marina.
The payment made by the user to be an actual transfer of funds, or a transfer of a virtual currency between the accounts on the server.
A second aspect is a method of enabhng a user to book a berth in any of several different marinas, in which the method includes the steps of: (a) a person holding a berth accessing a web server that generates one or more web pages that enable any person holding a berth at one of the marinas to indicate that his berth is available for use at a defined time; and r (b) a user accessing the web server to search for, book and pay for that berth, with a o payment being made automatically to the person holding the berth.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
The invention is implemented in a system from 247Seas Limited trading as The Waypoint®'. The Wavpoint is an Internet based business, which proposes to provide a revolutionary new system of searching, booking and paying for boat berthing. Its aim is to provide a platform for mooring owners, such as marinas, boatyards, harbourmasters and boat owners, to co-ordinate the letting and re-letting of berths. Akin to online dating and professional social networking, The Waypoint benefits from the potential to leverage networks of boat owners who will experience savings in time, money and effort, and in turn mooring owners should expect increased visitor occupancy and improved revenue from greater than before boat movements.
The key benefits for marinas, boatyards, harbourmasters and private berth holders are: The Waypoint will allow customers to occupy berths vacated by permanent berth holders.
* The Waypoint will bring customers searching for moorings online.
* The Waypoint will provide an online & mobile phone transaction and reservation portal.
o The key benefits for boat owners are: If) The Waypoint wifi provide an online reservation portal and passage planner for available C\J 20 berths and moorings.
* The Waypoint will re-advertise boat owners vacant berths while away, and give them a percentage of the proceeds to offset the cost of visiting other marinas and moorings.
* The Waypoint will provide a community to plan, share & organise crews and cruising.
The website currently provides the functionality for boat owners to search all of the marinas in North America and Western Europe via Google maps or a search bar interface. The invention is however not limited to a specific geographic area. Once a mooring has been selected, users will be able to book and pay online, using secure industry standard payment gateways. Additionally, the user will be able to passage plan, share content, form groups/events and communicate with other boat enthusiasts.
The pastime of sailing and cruising is a segment of the UK's 31 óbn overall leisure & small commercial marine industry (+5% from 2006/7). The market has experienced consistent growth and has survived the recent downturn in the world economy remarkably well, with no marinas closing since 2008. Additionally, grass roots sailing has benefited from a L23m London Olympics funding award (2009 to 2013) from the UK Government to encourage the development of the sport.
Sail and motorboat (over 26f0 ownership currently stands at 115,000 in the British Isle and Northern Ireland; roughly half of these boats will use coastal marinas, of which there are 223 (with 20 plus berths). The remainder of boats will be on private moorings. In the United States there are 995,000 sail and motorboats and 6,181 marinas; Canada has 250,000 boats and 1575 marinas and Scandinavia has 350,000 boats and 3258 marinas.
The present invention provides, in the Waypoint implementation, a common platform where boat owners and berth holders can interact, book and manage berths automatically; including making them vacant, searching, paying and distributing the revenue.
The \vebsite has tiered membership levels for boat owners to join the website. The annual membership fee will be free, although these members will be charged a transaction fee for booking berths online. It is expected that a significant proportion of these members wifi take up a subscription subsequently paying typically L5° per year for which they receive a reduced transaction fee, advanced features and other further benefits. Other revenue streams such as database leasing, advertising revenues and classified listings are to be exploited.
Although there are currently a number of specialist sailing and boating sites online, there are at present none offering the faciht to co-ordinate and optimise berthing. The Waypoint is an entirely unique solution by offering sub/re-letting via an Internet platform, creating a new market.
Web site goals * To enable boat owners to more effectively & efficiently manage their passages, temporary and permanent berths, saving them time and money.
* To enable marinas to efficiently manage their berths, increasing usage and revenue.
* To provide via one interface; a place for stakeholders to manage, reserve, control and optimise their berths.
To become a point of focus for all boating enthusiasts on the Internet; improve on the currently available facilities, communications and networks between them, \vhilst offering unique sailing applications.
The aim of the Waypoint is to address the needs of boat owners and mooring managers such as marinas, boatyards and harbour masters alike, by addressing the points of pain in the existing culture of boat ownership and mooring management, as described in the description of the Prior Art above.
The Waypoint delivers a workable solution to the pains experienced currently by the stakeholders described above and is relevant, interesting and useful to boat owners.
The Waypoint objectives The Waypoint provides a manageable, scalable and profitable platform for all involved parties.
The Waypoint enables boat owners to effectively "sub-let" any moorings they might themselves r hold and also find vacant moorings an3where in the world. Users are able to view the mooring, its facilities, prices, book and pay online. If the passage changes due to unforeseen circumstances then they can use a mobile optimised website / smartphone application to contact the marina to cancel and rearrange another. The users can cruise freely, and earn income (in the form of transferable and reclaimable credits) whilst they are away if their home berth is occupied by a visiting boat owner.
Mooring managers will benefit from access to a pool of potential revenue currently not accessible to them. The system will provide access to an incremental revenue stream they could not otherwise access. Mooring managers are also able to advertise their moorings across the \vOrld, take bookings and payments via The Waypoint. By recording boat owner's information online, marinas will be able to access records reducing paperwork; the payment methods provided also reduce sleep and scoot' incidents (where a boat enters a marina after hours and leaves before staff can receive payment).
The Waypoint's proposal makes seafaring fairer for all parties concerned, reinvigorate the industry, increasing boat movement and opening the market for the many fragmented small family run marinas.
The Waypoint will initially not be providing standalone hard/software solutions, as evangelists of \veb-enabled systems which can be rolled out to marinas with the minimum of fuss, training and cost far outweighs the costly traditional model of EPOS/POS solutions. It is however understood that the invention also could be in the form of various applications running on smartphones, tablet computers or similar personal devices. The applications could provide either access to the full range of services/settings as the web interface or a limited range of services/settings.
PRODUCT AND TECHNOLOGY
Currently UK based sailors, boat owners and crews have no central online location to search, edit, store, publish and share essential sailing data such as passage plans, mooring bookings and events information and crewing. A number of sites liave sprung up to address some of these needs, for example some websites provide detailed marina listings and some offer Cfind a crew' r facilities. However, they have no useful linkage to concurrent planning activities such as passage planning and marina booking.
The Waypoint is written using Ruby on Rails, a computing language used by popular websites, the invention is however not limited to the programming language used. The site will be hosted on Linux servers using Amazon's Engine yard cloud based hosting, which allows for a scalable and cost effective hosting solution. Payment Solutions are provided by SagePay, which also covers PayPal integration. Payments are secured by \7erisign SSL certificates. Overview of the programming structure can he seen in Figure 31.
The site will have two core user groups, which are defined as the following; Mooring managers: marina owners, boatyards, harbourmasters, charter/sailing schools, yacht clubs and Crown estates.
* Members: (includes visitors); boat owners, individual berths owners, sailors, crews, boating enthusiasts, businesses and anyone else with an interest in the services provided by the site.
An overview of the Wavpoint's structure can be seen in Figure 30. The Waypoint is a web-based system that gives users of the website access to a server either through the "Boat user \vorld" or through the "Mooring manager world". The database can also be accessed via the "Admin \vorld" and it is also possible for "Private berth owners" to access the database.
MAIN SITE FUNCTIONALITY
The main site functionahty -key requirements are described below. It is understood that some of the described features will only he accessible to paying or premium users. Some of the features will he available to all users and even to visitors of the site.
Mooring booking/sharing and advertising Users who sign up to the site will be able to search, book and pay for berth spaces from mooring managers. Initially before the site gets a significant number of boat owners signed up, these will CJ be visitor berths, which mooring managers will allow The Waypoint to broker. However, in time, members will sign up to sub-letting their moorings and more transactions will be based on a peer-to-peer basis.
Lon term lets and berth waitin lists Users will be given the option of paying for their long-term permanent berths through the site.
The berth owner could set different discount levels depending on the length of the stay. The discount could also vary depending on if the user pays the full fee upfront or in instalments.
The \vebsite will also allow members to join waiting hsts for highly subscribed moorings. The user would get a notification if a berth would be free matching the criteria set by the user. These criteria could be a specific berth or for instance the size of the boat, depth or facilities provided at the berth and the desired date and length of stay. The Waypoint could also provide for the user to be able to select if he would hke to be notified if only one of the desired days in his preferred range is available or if the whole length of stay has to be available for the same berth or for different berths within the same marina.
Passage Planning Users will be able to use a mapping tool to plan their passages; they will be able to plot a desired route with waypoints and latitude/longitude. The passage planner will allow crew members to view, comment and agree the plan; Passages can also be shared with friends and made public. An unlimited amount of passages will be able to be saved online or sent to PDF initially and to GPX, CSV, KML and more in the near future.
Profiles and sailing networks Each boat, boat owner, crew member, marina and business will be able to have a profile with which to express their sailing life or business, including photos, blogs and previous passages.
These will be available to be accessed by friends, crews and the public (if permitted). Group and event formation will allow further enhancement of the social networking facilities and \vJ]1 help grow recognition of the site by the use of invitations and sharing.
Smartphone applications The Waypoint would also be available through different forms of handheld devices such as smartphones or tablet computers. This could be through a dedicated application or through the r regular web interface or through a specific mobile device web interface. It is optional to provide the full functionality of the main web interface also in the mobile applications and the mobile specific web interface. LU20 c\J
Weather The Waypoint shall feature real-time weather information overlaid onto the site mapping, feeds could come from such sources such as Radar, Satelhte, and reputable onhne providers Accu Weather/Met Office).
The latest actual and forecasted weather, wind and rain conditions for either the closest weather zone to the users location (enabled with the use of a browser geolocation API in HTML5) or configured during the user sign-up. This will automatically change as the map view changes.
Further functions such as tides overlay and plug-ins from providers such as Windfinder, Windguru, Gribview will be available to advanced members.
One additional feature which the system could provide for is the ability to set certain weather related criteria for the berth bookings. For example when the wind is above a user-defined threshold, the system \vould book or cancel a specific berth. The berths to book or cancel could be selected from a predefined range of berths. Chart
The Waypoint Application will allow users to search for berths using, both the current Google maps solution and Charts (provided by for instance Navionics) which allow the tool to be of greater use to sailors at sea.
Chart overlays will be available for users so they can more accurately and usefully plan their passages.
Forums An active members community is encouraged to share information, recommendation and advice in the forums. This would be an ideal place for boat/berth owners associations to communicate.
The forums are the place for members and visitors to talk about boating issues by forming discussion groups, helping to develop the sense of community and provide site Cstickiness (a web 2.0 term which describes the retentiveness of a site).
The option to link a specific discussion to a marina or for the users to CCtag a marina or specified berth within a marina to a forum thread will be provided for.
Fuel Prices The Waypoint will enable partner marinas to update their fuel prices to allow members to search for the cheapest fuel prices, alongside berth availability etc. This feature could be improved by plugging in data from other online resources such as fuel price specific websites, in the form of an API to gather data of non-partner marinas.
Crew Finder Users will be able to upload their current location onto the passage planning map, to solicit for crew or to volunteer to be crew, once located on the map a link to the profile concerned is provided, allowing members to interact.
Web Cams Users will be able to view webcams from around the world from locations such as headlands, marinas, lighthouses etc. Classifieds l\iembers of The Waypoint will be able to list items for sale through a dedicated sales portal, from job offers to boat equipment. The site would charge a single listing fee rather than a percentage of final sale, premier members would be able to list a certain number of items free of charge a month.
Mail a Sail -Data Crushing The website will estabhsh links with "mail-a-sail", data compression tool which allows users to update logs from their Satellite phones when at sea whilst keeping the cost per minute down.
Service bookings Users will be able to order haul-outs and tables at restaurants via booking tools embedded into marina profiles. r
Additional widgets Widgets enhance the sites usabifity and will be added monthly to paying members profiles. The widgets will tend to be off-the-shelf and could include such tools as currency converter, thght scheduler, Google search bar and so on. MARKET ENVIRONMENT AND INDUSTRY
The saihng and boat industry is both historic and prestigious and is vital to many communities across the United Kingdom, in North America (in particular around Florida and the Great Lakes) and Scandinavia. In the UK alone there are around 35,200 full time staff employed witbin the leisure and small commercial marine industry. With the wider economic benefit of the 223 coastal marinas in the UK resulting in up to DUO mllhon value added contributions. The \Vaypoint aims to rejuvenate this market by opening communication channels and breaking down barriers between stakeholders. Boat owners will pay for the service because they can offset some of their mooring fees, marinas will sign up because they will be able to generate more income from better occupancy. r
The following passages identify the many potential users and who could benefit from The Waypoint offering that would be the most hkely to use mooring permanently.
Tiered Boat ownership Number of boats owned in the UK and abroad by UK households: the number of boat owners is made up of the following; Tier I (primary focus) Boats over 26ft, offshore Motorboats and Canal boats: UK ownership = 115. 600 North American 995. 000 Scandinavia 350, 000 Tier 2 (secondary focus) Registered boats (including fishing vessels, and boats used on inland waterways and lakes): UK ownership = 560, 000 North American 19, 200, 000 Scandinavia 3. 000, 000 Tier 3 (residual focus) Small sailing boats (less than 2.5 metres), canoe/kayaks ncluding sea kayaks), rowing boats, ribs/inflatable's, sport boat (racing, windsurfer, personal watercraft (jet skis): UK ownership 665, 170 North American 12, 900, 000
BUSINESS MODEL
After reviewing the market, the competition and speaking to a number of sailors, there seems to be enough pain for a solution to be sought. Sailing and its management are dated and falling behind other leisure industry providers such as hotehers and restaurateurs. Many marinas fail to even have an email address; this will have an increasingly detrimental effect on their business, as (\J a high proportion of the UK population is web aware these days. r
With the UK having 115, 000 tier one Boats, and 3 million globally, the market could be described as being finite. However the site will not only appeal to boat owners, but crews, friends and families of the boat, marine associated businesses, tier 2 and 3 users such as sea kayakers etc. Transactions The core revenue stream for the business will be based on taking a transaction fee from members paying online for moorings. Typically this will he a specified percentage of the total transaction cost however this may increase in cases such as when users make payment over the phone or via PayPal. The estimated average transaction will be LI 5, based on a sample of UK, North American and Scandinavian marina visitor charges. This income will be very seasonal, with peaks during the spring (Easter) and summer seasons, therefore this income will be supported by membership subscriptions.
Membership Subscription Members who tend to use the site regularly for their mooring payments will benefit from signing up as fully paid up members of the site. Typically this will he a DO a year or the price of a sailing magazine a month. This model creates a dependable income stream keeping cash flow consistent, especially important during the winter season. Membership will also feature exclusive content and upgrades, membership may also be given as gift vouchers and users may use their credits earned from moorings to pay for membership.
Advertising Income may be sourced from having affiliate and newsietter/blog/page sponsorship, however the market for online advertising has been significantly depressed for some time and worthwhile revenue is only expected once the site has achieved reasonable membership and page view levels.
The Waypoint will allow relevant brands to sponsor sections or newsletters, taking a share of revenue generated as part of a partnership-advertising scheme.
Interest on Credits Members are able to obtain site credits when they sub-let their mooring. They can also get small amounts of credit for referring members or winning best hlogs/photographs etc. This money will be held in a client account, which will be able to earn interest. This in terms of revenue is r insignificant. However, it requires no additional effort other than organising a bank account.
Classifieds Further down the line the site will allow signed-up members to list items such as boats and equipment for sale for either a commission or small fee.
Further details are given in the following appendices: Appendix I -User Stories Appendix 2 -Detailed general features list Appendix 3 -Detailed payment features list Appendix 1
USER STORIES
BOAT OWNER USER STORY
ABSTRACT
This user story details the user experience for the web-enabled database The Waypoint. This document is to be used to derive user cases and engineering requirements.
The concept of The Waypoint is to bring two groups of people together: those who have moorings they want to sub-let' when they are laid-up, or away on holiday or extended travel; and those people who wish to rent a mooring space for a weekend, week or longer.
The greater concept is to give members' a web-activated place to plan their cruise. This may include local advertising of services, narrative and stories of areas, helpful tips, and advise places r to see and things to avoid, accessible via a browser or phone.
C. The Waypoint will allow customers to occupy berths vacated by permanent berth hldr o es.
The Waypoint will bring customers searching for moorings online.
The Waypoint will provide an online & mobile phone transaction and reservation portal.
THE USER STORY
This is the user story of an Internet user, planning a sailing trip and looking to book moorings online. The Waypoint (hereafter the website') is a website which can provide an integrated planning and booking service to meet individual's needs.
LOCATING THE SITE
The website has been built to work efficiendy on Macs and PCs as well as Smartphone's, using any Internet browser or a dedicated application residing on the phone. This allows users to access the site from anv'vliere, including from their boat.
The site can be found using a search engine, such as Google or Bing. Using a correctly configured AdWords campaign (as explained in the Business Plan), the website will appear at the top of the list of results generated by the search engine as the top paid for advertiser. Using good Search Engine Optimisation techniques, over time the website will appear at the top of the list organically reducing the need for a paid for campaign.
FIRST STEPS
Before the website appears in the browser, it uses browser information to identify the user's location. When the site opens it will therefore show the map relevant to the user, e.g. the UK South coast (Figure 1). Having deduced the location of the user, the website will use browser information to select the relevant language to display the site in. The language may be changed at any time using the flag buttons at the bottom of the home page, or on the user settings page.
The location and language settings are stored in a cookie allowing the site to always open in the same location and language unless the settings are altered. c\J
r USING THE SITE AS A VISITOR Internet users can browse the site without signing up as a member.
L020 SEARCHING FOR BERTHS On the home page visitors are able to use the map to search tor moorings in a desired location by typing the location and entering in the dates. The map will then show available marinas (Figure 2).
Marinas that are members of the site are displayed on the map using white tags with an M'.
Inside this tag a coloured circle demonstrates availability: green means there is a berth vacant, red means they are all occupied other colours could also be used. The availability of berths could also be shown with symbols at the tag. Marinas that are not members will be displayed using a different coloured tag or a different symbol.
By clicking on a tag, the name of the marina appears in a bubble. The visitor is able to view the marina's home page by clicking on the marina's name (Figure 17), which provides contact details and the services on offer.
A visitor is however, unable to book a mooring without becoming a member. The create account' button is therefore displayed on the top bar whilst the visitor is browsing, encouraging them to sign up in order to fully utillse the functionality of the site.
PASSAGE PLAN
Following the button on the home page, the visitor is able to create a passage plan.
The passage planner tool is for concept use only and waypoints derived should not be used for navigation. However, waypoint GPX or text download of significant waypoints is available for loading into a boats navigation system. The passage planner is closely hnked to the bespoke berth vacancy display. The vacancy display will be a Google map overlay, with the passage planning tools as an extra.
The passage planning tool draws a line between destinations using a click and draw facility.
Below the map a read-out of the distance covered is given in nautical miles, along with the C\i coordinates of each point. The points may be deleted using a button next to the reading below r the map (Figure 13).
A visitor is unable to save the passage plan and will need to create an account to do so. The create account' button is therefore displayed to encourage the visitor to sign up.
VIEW PUBLIC INFORMATION
Visitors \vill have access to public \vebsite data displaying information about the site. This includes the about us page' and legal information including the Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions.
Visitors are able to view profile pages that have been made public. Usually this will be Mooring Managers' profile displaying information about their marina. Visitors may also view public events listed on the site and the groups that have been created. The most recent newsletter will be displayed upon the site for visitors hut previous issues are only available to members.
By viewing these pages the visitor is able to become familiar with the sense of community the site creates. Through displaying information clearly, the site is open with its users. This should instil confidence in the company and encourage visitors to become part of our community.
SIGNING UP FOR A BOAT OWNER'S ACCOUNT In order to use the full facilities of the site, users must sign up for an account. By clicking on the create account' button, the user is taken to a page displaying the benefits of being an account holder (Figure 3). The user may then continue to sign up to the site.
To begin, the user is asked to enter basic personal information (his name and email address) and select a password (Figure 4). Here, the user is asked to agree to the site's Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions before he may continue with signing up. These documents are available to read or print by following links on the page.
Once the user has entered their details, they will be sent a confirmation email to ensure the address given is a working email address (Figure 5). The email \vill contain a link the user can follow to sign into and activate his account. Alternatively, once the user has received the email they may return to the home page and log in manually (Figure 6).
r The user is able to change their account settings using the settings' tab displayed on the top bar at all times. Here the user is able to change the initial settings entered, including the language, their email address and their password (Figure 7). LU20 + +
There is an option to enter turther contact details, such as a postal address and telephone number if the user so chooses (Figure 8).
The member may enter a narrative about himself and his sailing experience, which he can choose to display on his profile that may be viewed by other members (Figure 9). The member is also able to upload a picture to use as their profile picture.
By providing space for this individual information, the site is providing each member with a page they can personalise and make their own.
From the settings page a member may close their account using the close account' button. This will remove their profile page from the site and cease their membership.
ADD A BOAT
Members are able to add a boat to their profile by entering the My Boats' page accessible via the settings' page.
The member is asked to enter the name of the boat and its dimensions. Dimensions may he entered in feet or metres. The measurements entered here will be used when searching for an appropriate mooring for the boat. A picture may be added to the boat listing (Figure 10).
EDITING AND DELETING BOATS
Many boats can be added to each member's profile. Each boat listing may be edited at any time.
By pressing the edit' button alongside each listing in My Boats', the member is able to alter the dimensions, rename the boat or upload a new picture.
Similarly boats can easily be deleted by clicking on the delete' button next to the listing. When this is pressed a warning message will appear asking the member to confirm he wishes to delete r + + + ++ + this listing. Once this ts confirmed the listing will be removed.
0 ADD A BERTH Boat Owners are able to sublet their own berth through the site while they are not using it. This enables Boat Owners to offset the cost of a sailing holiday.
Berths may be added on the My Berths' page, which is accessed using the link on the settings' page or by clicking Berths' button displayed on the top bar. Here the member simply clicks Add a new berth' (Figure 11).
ADDING A MARINA BERTH
If the berth is part of a marina, a drop down list appears from which the member is able to select the marina in which his berth is situated. Once the marina is selected, a second drop down list appears of the berths registered at this marina. If the berth is not featured on the list the member may manually enter the berth code, type of berth, and access. The site will seek confimution from the Marina that this berth does in fact belong to the member and once received the berth will he added to the member's berth listings.
It is also understood that there could he instances where a private berth is part of for instance a recognized marina, harbour or dock. The site would in that case not seek permission from the marina owner to add the berth to the listing of available berths. The site could however have listed the available berth identifications, such as berth number, against which the user would pick the corresponding number to identify his berth.
ADDING A PRIVATE BERTH
If the berth is privately owned, the member manually enters the latitude and longitude to locate the mooring. The type of mooring e.g. buoy or pontoon, is selected from a drop down list, as is the form of access, e.g. dinghy or walk ashore. The size of the berth is required, including the water depth or the fact it is a drying berth, so it may be compared to the boat dimensions when users are searching for vacancies. The member is also able to upload a photo of their mooring and enter a narrative of further information should they so choose. The listing will instantly be created.
(\J EDITING AND DELETING BERTHS r Berth listings may be altered at any time using the edit' button placed alongside each listing. This enables members to change the photo or update any information. Similarly, the listing may be deleted by pressing the delete' button next to the listing. When this is pressed a warning message will appear requesting the member to confirm they tsh to delete this listing. Once confirmed, the listing is deleted from the member's profile.
BERTH VACANCY
\Vhen a berth holder makes a booking for his boat through the \vebsite, his own berth will automatically be listed as vacant and as such neither the berth holder nor the Marina is required to actually list the berth as vacant.
The berth holder could alternatively select that the vacancy status only should be updated manually. The member would then indicate a start date and end date for when the berth is to be listed as vacant or add a start date and the number of vacant nights.
SEARCH FOR A BERTH FOR YOUR BOAT
Once an account has been created, the member is able to use the site to search for and book mootings. To enter the booking page, the member can click the book a berth' button on either the overview page which opens as a member logs in, or the my bookings' page which can be found following the bookings' tab at the top of the page.
The bookings page displays a map and information boxes. First of all the member must after the dates to those for which he wishes to book a mooring. The member may also select a boat they have already added to their profile, for which they wish to book the berth. If a boat is selected the moorings that are displayed will accommodate a boat of the dimensions registered.
Once the dates, and possibly the boat, are entered, the member can search the location they require.
SEARCH VIA A MAP
Once the dates and the boat are entered, colour-coded or othenvise signed tags on the map will show the available moorings. The user is then able to zoom in on the map by double clicking, scrolling up, or using the zoom scale on the left hand side. The user can move the map through a C\i click and drag function. Once the user has identified the required location, he is able to click on the tags to obtain information about the marina and proceed to booking the berth.
The controls for interacting with the map could vary depending on the map, map source and map provider used.
SEARCH VIA A TEXT FIELD
Above the map is a text box in which the member may type the location in which they wish to find a mooring. Once the member has typed in a place name, the map will zoom in on that location and display the tags showing available moorings in that area.
SEARCH VIA A PASSAGE PLAN
As member, the user is able to create and save passage plans (see below. In the passage plan the user will have identified destinations on the map that he wishes to sail to. Tags will appear on the map around the selected destinations showing available moorings.
BOOKING A BERTH
Once the user has searched for berths he can proceed to book a mooring. As explained above, marinas that are registered with the site are displayed by a white tag with an M' in it. Inside this tag a coloured circle or otherwise signed demonstrates the availability of the mooring, a green circle shows there is a berth available, a red circle sho\vs they are all occupied. Any marina that is not registered with the site will still show on the map but will be displayed by a differently coloured or signed tag.
When the user chcks on the tag, a bubble appears showing the name of the marina, the total number of moorings it has, and the number of available berths. The bubble may be extended to show the services available at this marina by clicking the show available services' link. The services are shown in a series of icons. Further details about the marina can be viewed by accessing the marina's profile page by chcking on the marina's name in the bubble (Figure 17).
If the member decides they \vould like to go ahead and book a mooring with that marina, they can return to the map and select show available berths'. This will bring up a table below the map showing berths available on certain dates in a series of circles (Figure 15). The user is able to choose the berth they wish to book on each night by clicking on the circle for the corresponding berth and date. Once the berth has been selected the member may proceed by clicking on the r book button.
Once a booking has been made a confirmation email will be sent to the member's registered email address. This will include the contact details of the marina or berth holder as well as the company's terms and conditions.
OVERVIEW OF BOOKINGS
Once the member has made a hooking, they are able to see an overview of upcoming bookings.
The overview page, which appears as the member logs in, shows a list of future bookings made by the member (Figure 12). The bookings page, which is located on the top bar, displays upcoming bookings on a calendar (Figure 16).
On both of these pages the member is able to view details of the booking by clicking booking detail'. The member may also review details of the marina by viewing their profile page through clicking on the marina name.
PASSAGE PLANNING
The passage planner tool allows the user to map the route he wishes to sail. The passage planner tool is for concept use only and waypoints derived should not he used for navigation. However, \vaypoint GPX or text download of significant waypoints is available for ease to loading into a boats navigation system.
CREATING A NEW PASSAGE PLAN
By selecting the Passage Plans' tab at the top of the screen, the user is taken to the My Passage Plans' page displaying a map and any previously saved passage plans. Above the map is a button labelled Add a Passage Plan'. By clicking on this the user is transported to a page with an interactive map where they are able to begin creating a passage plan.
Using the search bar, the user may enter the name or coordinates of the location where they wish to begin their journey. The user is able to map the route he wishes to sail using the click and C\i draw facility. Tags appear on the map with a straight line between them (Figure 13). r
Below the map, a list of the waypoints is created showing the latitude and longitude of the point.
The distance between each point is shown, measured in nautical miles, as is a cumulative distance showing the total distance travelled from the point of departure. The beating on which the boat should sail between each point is also shown.
Each point may he deleted from the list by using the delete' button next to each listing. Each point may also be edited allowing users to manually enter the location they are seeking. All points may be cleared easily by selecting the clear plan' link in the bottom right hand corner of the list.
This allows members to start afresh at any point.
BOOKING A MOORING FROM THE PASSAGE PLAN
As the user plots points on the passage plan, available moorings and details of the surrounding area will appear in tags on the map. This allows members to decide if the chosen location is what they are looking for e.g. if it has scenic walks or a nice pub. It also allows members to view available moorings and go on to book a berth if required.
SAVING AND SHARING A PASSAGE PLAN
Once a passage plan has been created, the member has the option of saving the plan. To save the plan it must be given a name. A description may also be added e.g. to explain the purpose of the trip. Once a passage is saved it will appear on the My Passage Plans' main page.
When saving a passage plan, the member must select tick the box if they wish to make it pubhc.
If the plan is made public it will be featured on their profile, which is visible to other users (Figure 14).
Once a plan has been saved it may he shared with friends. From the My Passage Plans' page, the member can open a saved plan by clicking on its name. As it opens, the route will be shown on the map and the waypoints listed below. The option to share the passage plan is displayed below the map. Here a friend's name and email address are requested. Once these have been entered the member presses the share passage plan' button and an email will be sent to their friend with a link to their passage plan. c\J
r EDITING AND DELETING A PASSAGE PLAN On the My Passage Plan' page, each saved passage plan has an edit' and delete' button alongside it. LU20
Upon pressing the edit' button the user is taken to an editing page. Here the user is able to edit the waypoints of the journey. He is also able to alter the name, description and whether he \vishes the plan to be made public.
When the user presses the delete' button, a warning message appears asking the user to confirm they wish to delete the passage plan. Once this is confirmed the passage plan will be removed from the list of passage plans and also from their profile.

MOORING MANAGER USER STORY
ABSTRACT
As a Mooring/Berth Owner, I want to post available berths; I \vould like to increase my occupancy rate for annual berth holders and visitors alike'.
Free Marketing, Administration, Payment and Management Tools to all Marinas that join The Waypoint This user story details the user experience for the web-enabled database The Waypoint. This document is to be used to derive user cases and engineering requirements.
The concept of The Waypoint is to bring together Mooring Managers \vho have vacant berths and Boat Owners searching for a place to moor their boat.
The greater concept is to give marinas a web presence through which they can advertise and let r vacant berths to maximise their business potential. This particularly includes the subletting of permanently held berths. By providing an easily accessible interface through which boat owners can search for and book a mooring and encouraging berth holders to sublet their permanent berths, marinas will be able to increase the number of advanced bookings they receive which are paid for up front.
Our goal is freedom: * to allow harbourmasters, boatyards, marinas, and private owners to increase berth occupancy rates by optimising annual berth holders vacancy times to be offered to visitors.
* to allow boat owners to access marina mooring and vacant berths via one interface.
* to become the single point of focus for all sailing enthusiasts on the internet.
INTRODUCTION
This is the user story for Mooring Managers. Mooring Managers include harbourmasters, boatyards, marinas, and private individuals who manage their own mooring. These players are key to the success of The Waypoint (hereafter the website). As part of the business plan for the website, Mooring Managers will he approached through a marketing campaign which will encourage as many Mooring Managers as possible to sign up before the website is launched.
This wii involve presenting to Mooring Managers the commercial benefits, for themselves and their customers, of introducing targeted IT tools to berth management. These benefits are detailed within this document and include the following: * Optimised online marketing tools.
* Optimised vacancy management of their berths.
* Advanced communication tools to their berth holders.
Offering annual berth holders access to the greater conununity'.
All boat owners who register their berths will have to be associated with a Mooring Manager account. This may be an already existing Mooring Manager account (e.g. a marina's account) or an account created for the boat owner to manage their own mooring.
LOCATING THE SITE
The site should be compatible with and able to work fully on PCs and Macs and in all browsers o at different screen resolutions. It is expected that a number of the marinas and harbourmasters LI) will have out-dated IT hardware and software, therefore the site should be as lightweight as possible.
The site can be found using a search engine, such as Google. Using a correcily configured Ad Words campaign (as explained in the Business Plan), the site will appear at the top of the list as the top paid for advertiser. Through good search engine optimisation (SEO) techniques, over time the site will appear at the top of the hst organically reducing the need for a paid for camp aign.
Using browser information, the site will identify the location of the user and open to display a map showing the area relevant to the user. Similarly, it will recognise the relevant language in which to display the site. The language may be changed at any time using flags displayed on the homepage or in the profile settings page. The location and language settings are stored in a cookie allowing the site to always open using the same language and location, unless the settings are altered (Figure 1).
HOME PAGE AND LINKAGE TO MOORING MANAGER PAGE
Further information about the site is displayed on the home page. A tab for Marina Owners gives a brief overview of the benefits of the site. General site details are provided following the What is The Waypoint' tab on the top bar.
From the homepage the Mooring Manager is able to take a tout of the site. By selecting the Mooring Manager Tout' button at the bottom of the page, the user will be shown an animation displaying the key functionality of the site, promoting the benefits available to Mooring Managers. This should encourage visitors to become part of The Waypoint community.
A Mooring Manager must sign up to the site to use the tools on offer. By clicking on the sign up button the user is taken to a page showing the two types of account -Boat Owner and Mooring Manager -and the benefits for each. Here the user selects the sign up' button to proceed to member registration (Figure 3).
(\J BENEFITS OF A MOORING MANAGER ACCOUNT There are many benefits to having a Mooring Manager's account. The profile page with a unique URL address (e.g. nw.marinaname.thewaypoint.com), gives the marina a web presence and thus provides a useful marketing tool. Basic SEO of the Marina home page &l allow marinas to appear at the top of search results produced by search engines.
Communication with resident berth holders will be promoted as they are encouraged, or incentivised, to advertise their berths \vhen they are vacant. By enabling berths to be listed as vacant easily and efficiently with no paperwork, marinas are able to optimise their earning potential.
As Boat Owners are able to book moorings in advance, they are not disappointed by travelhng to the marina and finding no space is available. A good booking and travelling experience will encourage Boat Owners to make repeat visits to the marina. As bookings are paid for in advance, the marina knows which berths will be occupied when and the risk of non-payments from missed visitors are reduced.
SIGN UP PROCESS
The aim of the sign up page is to make it as user friendly as possible.
On the sign up page the Mooring Manager will be asked to enter his name and email address and choose a username and password. The user is asked to name their marina. Using information from an existing database a list of marinas will appear as the user starts typing from which they can select their marina. From the database, the site will be able to add the postal address and telephone number to the profile.
An email will then be sent to the company email address featured on the existing database in order to prevent fraudulent accounts being created (Figure 5). The email will include the full terms and conditions of using the site, and a link leading the user back to the site to sign in.
Alternatively, once the email has been received the user may return to the site manually to sign in (Figure 6). If no email address is present, a phone call will be made to the telephone number held on the database during normal office hours.
MARINA PROFILE
Once the Mooring Manager has signed in, they are able to edit the marina's profile page and add additional information.
To add information the user must access the editing page which can be found by following the edit marina profile' link at the top of the page, or on the My Marina' page an edit' button is featured next to the marina's name.
Once on the editing page the user is able to write a narrative on the marina. This may include a history of the marina or ownership details. The idea of this panel is to provide Mooring Managers with a space in which they can promote their services and advertise their marina to Boat Owners. The Mooring Manager may also advertise their radio channel and information on access and safety.
Below the description, a list of marina services is provided. From this the user can check the boxes of the services their marina provides. The options selected will show on the profile page in a series of icons.
A Mooring Manager is also able to upload photos which will be featured on the marina's profile.
This will enable the Mooring Manager to advertise the marina and build a sense of community as he can keep members up to date with any changes or developments. (Figure 17)
ADDING BERTHS
A Mooring Manager needs to add berths to their profile to enable Boat Owners to book moorings with them. Following the Berths' tab on the top bar, the user is taken to a page displaying any berths already registered. To add berths the user is provided with two options: add a single berth, or bulk upload.
ADDING BERTHS MANUALLY
By selecting Add', the user is taken to a form asking for details. Here the user types in the berth code (e.g. Al). Then, from a drop down list he can select the type of mooring (e.g. quay) and the access type (e.g. walk ashore). The user is asked to specify if it is a drying berth by checking the box provided. c\J r,*
Additional notes may be added to the berth s information to provide Boat Owners wtth further information about the mooring.
Finally, the user is required to enter the dimensions of the berth, which may be done in metres, feet or any other unit as preferred. The dimensions are required in order for the site to compare them to those of a boat for which a mooring is being sought.
BULK UPLOAD OF BERTHS
If the marina has a comma separated variable (CSV) file containing the details of all their berths they are able to upload this to make the adding process more efficient and streamlined.
Once Bulk Upload' has been selected, the user is taken to a screen which shows the minimum features that must be included in the CSV file. These include: berth code, type, access and the dimensions. Using the choose file' button the user is able to browse their files and select the CSV file to be uploaded.
Uploading the file will allow the information to be integrated into the marina's profile and a hst of the berths featured therein will be compiled.
ADDING BERTH HOLDERS
The Mooring Manager is able to invite their annual berth holders to use the site. This can be done by sending out invitations to their client list via email.
By inviting berth holders, the Mooring Manager is able to promote the site and encourage new users to sign up. Berth holders will be encouraged to tell the marina when their berth will be vacant in order for it to be sublet via the website. The site may be used to optimise communication between the marina and the berth holders, for example by communication information updates or new services provided by the marina.
EDITING AND DELETING BERTHS
Berths that have been added are displayed in a list on the Berths' page. The user may focus on an individual berth by clicking on the berth code which will take the user to the single berth page. On this page, the details of the berth and any future bookings are displayed.
r The details may be edited by pressing on the edit' button provided next to the berth details. This allows the user to edit any details odnally input or add further information, including pictures.
A berth may be deleted by pressing the delete' button at the top of the single berth page. A warning message will appear requesting the user to confirm lie wishes to delete the entry. If the user confirms the entr will be removed from their profile and deleted from the site.
ADVERTISING A BERTH AS VACANT
Tn order for Boat Owners to find and book a berth held by the Mooring Manager, it must he listed as vacant. Berths will be assumed occupied until the user indicates otherwise.
SETTING VACANCIES TODAY
To assist day to day management, the Mooring Manager is able to list berths that are available that same day. Clicking on the Berths' tab takes the user to a list of the berths saved on his profile. Next to each listing is a button showing the availability of each berth on that day. The button shows red and says unavailable' if the berth is occupied. If the berth is vacant the button shows green and reads available'. To change the status of the berth for that day the user chcks on the button and it will change from red to green and vice versa (Figure 21).
SETTING INDIVIDUAL BERTHS
Listing vacancies in the future can be done for each berth individually or for many at once. To set individual berths, the user selected the berth they wish to list as vacant from the list provided on the Berths' page. The individual berth's page will then be displayed showing information about the berth and a colour coded calendar open on today's date and showing a month view.
Today's date will be shown in a bright colour with the others days distinguished using a paler colour.
A box named Create a Vacancy' is shown beneath the calendar. Here the user may enter the relevant dates and press create'. This is especially good for entering multiple consecutive dates, such as a weeklong period where the berth will be vacant. The vacant dates will then be shown on the calendar in green. (4
r To enter individual dates the user can click on the relevant date on the calendar. This will list that date as vacant and the date wifi show as green. When a booking is made the date will turn grey and booking details will show when the user moves his cursor over the date. LU20
To remove a vacancy the user clicks on the date on the calendar and the day will revert from green to the original pale colour (Figure 20).
SETTING MULTIPLE BERTHS
If the Mooring Manager wishes to list many of the berths as vacant for any one particular day, he must go to the Overview' page. This opens automatically on sign in or can be located via the Overview' tab on the top bar. Here a calendar is displayed showing today's date in cyan and the other days in light blue.
To input vacancies the user clicks on the relevant date and a list of all their berths appears with buttons alongside showing whether the berth is vacant or not. The user can then select each button to show which berths are vacant (Figure 22).
OVERVIEW OF VACANCIES
The overview calendar shows how many berths are vacant on each day and how many bookings have been made, appearing as a link, e.g. I vacancy'. By clicking on this link the user is able to view \vhlch berth is vacant.
The overview therefore provides a clear layout showing forthcoming vacancies in the marina which the Mooring Manager is able to advertise and sublet to visitors (Figure 18).
MANAGEMENT OF BOOKINGS
Once berths have been listed as vacant, Boat Owners will be able to find them by conducting a search and book them using the website. When a booking is made, the Mooring Manager will be sent an email containing details of the booking and the member who has made the booking.
l-lo\vever, large marinas are likely to receive many bookings therefore Mooring Managers will need to be able to view all the bookings that have been made for their marina. c\J
r OVERVIEW OF BOOKINGS The Overview' page displays a calendar showing the current month. On each date any bookings that have been made are shown by a link displaying the number of booking, e.g. 2 bookings'. By clicking on this link a window opens with a list of the bookings that have been made for that date. The list shows which berth has been booked by whom. If the user selects the booking he will be able to view contact details of the member who has made the booking. These will be the details made available by the member on his profile, at a minimum it \vill include their name, email address and boat details.
Alternatively, below the map there is a list of upcoming bookings showing those who has booked for which dates. By clicking on the member's name, the user will be taken to a page showing details of the booking including berth code, member's contact details and boat details (Figure 18).
BOOKINGS FOR INDIVIDUAL BERTHS
On the Berths' page the Pvlooring Manager is able to view details of an individual berth by selecting it from the list. Once on the individual berth's page, a calendar is displayed showing the current month giving an overview of bookings and vacancies. Where bookings have been made the dates will be shaded in grey. By moving the cursor over these dates the user name and boat name of the member who has made the hooking \vill show in a bubble.
Below the map, a list of upcoming bookings is displayed. Here the user is able to click on the listing to view the full booking details, including contact details of the Boat Owner (Figure 19).
HISTORY OF BOOKINGS
The Mooring Manager is also able to view a history of bookings that have been made for their marina. These will be shown in a list of dates for when bookings were made, for which berths and by whom.
This will allow Mooring Managers to view which berths are receiving the most visitors and \vhich members are making repeat bookings. This information may be downloaded in CSV format in relation to a single berth or the entire berth portfolio. Providing this information for marinas will assist their ongoing marketing and advertising. It ensures The Waypoint is utilised as C%tIII a marina management tool and will encourage further use of the site's functionality. r
N.. INCENTIVES From the information provided regarding the bookings that have been made, the Mooring Manager is able to see which berth holders have been letting out their berths most frequenily.
Mooring Managers may offer incentives to their berth holders to encourage them to advertise their vacant berths through the website. Incentives can be created in the form of credits on the \vebsite, allowing them to book other moorings through the website. The incentives could also be a time limited alteration of the revenue split between the marina and the berth holder.
PAYMENT
Payment for bookings on the site shall be conducted using credits. The member buys credits which are stored on his Waypoint account. When he makes a booking those credits are transferred to the Mooring Manager's account.
When the member purchases credits, the money is held in escrow in a client account. The credits are transferred to the Mooring Manager and on completion of the booking the Mooring Manager will he able to withdraw the credits as monies. Completion of hooking can be \vhen the user is making the hooking. It could also be at any predefined time before the night of the booking. The completion of the booking could also be at the occurrence of a specified event after the night has passed, for instance the confirmation from the user that the booked berth actually was available and had the advertised facilities available.
Payment portals used will be Sagepay and Paypal.
NEWSLETTER
A monthly newsletter featuting news about the site, products, new functions and offers will be created. Mooring Managers will have the opportunity to advertise their marina in the newsletter or perhaps sponsor an article. The newsletter will be viewed on the site by visitors and members will receive a copy to their registered email address.
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE
A link to the Help' page is displayed at all times at the bottom of the site. This page is designed to assist users in their navigation of the site. c\J
Frequently asked questions (FAQs) will be featured providing typed answers to simple user issues. A series of screen shots will also be used to relate answers to using the site.
A user manual for Mooring Managers will be published on tnis page. This will provide a step by step guide to using the Mooring Manager's account including screen shots to make the directions clear and straight forward.
A telephone number will he provided on this page allowing the customer to gain an instant and personalised response to any problems that may arise.
It is anticipated that in time a live chat room will be featured on the help page. This will allow a member of the Waypoint team to be present on the website if users required any advice.
Flash cards will also be created providing a step by step guide to using the site.
ADMINISTRATOR USER STORY
ABSTRACT
This user story details the user experience for the web-enabled database The Waypoint (hereafter the \vebsite). This document is to be used to derive cases and requirements for the enabling data types, structures and administrative processes involved in the day to day running of the website.
From the administrator's point of view, the website's concept is to bring two groups of people together, the Boat Owners and the Mooring Managers.
Boat Owners: Those who have moorings they want to sublet' when they are laid-up or away on holiday or extended travel. Boat owners are also those people who are on extended travel' and may wish to rent a mooring space for a weekend, week or longer. The greater concept is to give members' a web-activated place to plan their cruise. This includes advertising of local services, narrative and stories of areas, helpful rips and advice on places to see and things to avoid, all of \vhich is accessible via a browser, phone Mooring Managers: Those individuals, companies, organisations, harbour commissionaires, and trusts who are responsible for manang mooring space for boats along the coast and inland wateays. Mooring managers want to offer their customers ilexibih and get the most cost effective return on their mooring infrastructure investment.
The Waypoint's goal is freedom: * to allow boat owners to cruise by sharing' mooring space * to allow users to access, via one interface, marina mooring and vacant berths * to become the single point of focus for all sailing enthusiasts on the web
INTRODUCTION
This document represents a basic requirement set for the administrator user function. This document also details the functional view of the underlying data to assist in the data driven design process. The data design detailed in this document should be considered as guidance. It is the underlying functionality which is required.
PRELIMINARIES
When considering the design of this web-enabled system, consideration should favour free or commercial off the shelf widgets and functionality to be used. However, an overriding design objective shall be to optimise the automation of the administration function.
BRITISH MARINE FEDERATION
The Waypoint is a signatory to the British Marine Federation (http://www.britishmarine.co.uk/), and as such shall comply with the Code of Practice detailed by the BMF. This includes the following: * Evidentiary requirements for financial transactions. This functionality is built into financial accounting packages.
* Client Accounts -all customers' credits and monies shall be held in a customer account.
* Legal requirements -abiding by the laws and regulations of the marine industry.
DATA TYPES AND HIERARCHY r
o This section details the basic account users and the hierarchy through which they function. This should be considered as guidance. From a functional point of view the data driven model should consist of two distinct top level account types, which are as follows: Mooring Manager MM: this is associated with the marina! harbour master management data type needs to support their role.
Boat Owner (BO): this includes the details of the vessel/boat/yacht and the crew who sail and owii it.
Each account will use the following pages: * User Home page -containing all user's information * User Admin page -changing user parameters (address etc) * Visitors page -What you want other users to see * Administrators page -For admin purposes
MOORING MANAGER
The user types all work together when utihsing the site to its full potential. The Boat Owner books a mooring with a berth holder. The berth is part of a marina who oversees the bookings.
One simple booking therefore passes through many hands (Figure 23).
Generic Relationship between Boat Owner, Mooring Manager and Administrator This example is taken from the River Hamble sailing area: The Crown Estate owns much of the land and riverbed. The Crown Estates manages the river mooring via Hampshire County Council. Hampshire County Council manages the river via the River Hamble Harbour Authority based at Warshash (The Harbourmaster). The Harbourmaster then lets his own moorings (pile, buoy & pontoon) as well as being the co-ordinating body for the numerous boatyards and marinas along the river shores, all of which have pontoons, piles and buoys to manage on behalf of boat owners. (\J
In this example a boat owner renting piles in the river will pay harbour dues to the Harbourmaster and rent to the Crown Estates for the ground, piles etc. Visiting yachtsman overnight will normally have to pay a marina an overnight rental fee, which will include a small amount to the Harbourmaster (harbour dues). This can be represented in the diagram in Figure 24 which shows the interconnection described above between the Crown Estate, Hampshire County Council, Marinas/Boatyards and the end user -the Boat Owner and their crew.
Working Example data construction -River Hamble Conceptually the Mooring Manager account holds two different sets of information; home data (information about the business) and mooring data (information about the moorings and berth holders within its jurisdiction). Through the mooring data, the Mooring Manager is linked to the Boat Owner who has registered his boat with that mooring. See Figure 25 for Mooring manager data type detail.
MOORING MANAGER HOME DATA
The Mooring Manager will be associated with a home page, community profile etc provided by The Waypoint. This is \vhere information about the company is stored. The following is a list of fields that will be used to make up the home data of a Mooring Manager's account.
Header * Unique MM ID 5]\iain User Input * Name * Avatar/picture * Address * Location @at and long) * Number of moorings * MM type (Marina, Harbourmaster, Club)
* Description
Adniinistration/Financials C\J 15. Agreed transaction rate with The Waypoint * Agreed transaction rate for Mooring Manager * Agreed transaction rate for Berth Holder * Transaction rate for Boat Owners * MM Feedback
MOORING MANAGER MOORINGS DATA
This data type contains each mooring within the Mooring Manager's account. This information will be used by the site to compare dimensions with that of registered boat data in order for mooring searches to be conducted accurately. The following is a list of fields that will be required to obtain the relevant information.
Header * Unique MM ID Main User Input * Mooring number ID * Mooring type * Access type * Depth * Drying berth? * Mooring note (any further relevant information entered as free text) * Occupancy o Note: the actual occupancy is governed by the status of the Boat Owner but is overseen by the Mooring Manager who has the power to override this.
Financial * Daily rate 10. Weekly rate * Monthly rate * Annual rate * Boat Owner's pay down rate.
Administration * Mooring feedback Ft Calendar function.
If) BOAT OWNER A Boat Owner account also contains ro sets of data; personal data and boat data. However, a user may create a profile based on personal data without adding boat data. Boat owners may invite boat users to join the website for ease of communication. The owner may have a number of crew if the boat is planning to be campaigned for racing or cruising during the year. The Skipper would need to inform all the crew what the plans are, where the boat is and what the intended passage plan is. A charter company might want to add their charterers as crew, so the charterer can create some basic passage plans and pre-book berths for specific dates. Crew members may also enter further personal data in the form of a log which will be connected to the boat.
When a Boat Owner creates his profile, static data such as home mooring location, name & mooring number shall be inherited from the existing Mooring Manager data sets (for further details on this see Boat Owner user story. The Boat Owner may change the mooring with which he is connected hut he must always be associated with a Mooring Manager. If the Boat Owner manages his own mooring, he will establish his own Mooring Manager's account. See Figure 26 for Boat owner data type detail.
PERSONAL DATA
The personal data is made up of information required to open an account, and optional information which may be added at a later date. The personal data type must be created by all users of the site and can be associated with the boat data type of another account. This allows crews to have their own account, leaving the boat as a separate entity managed by the Skipper.
Only Boat Owners also control the boat data type and may enter, edit or delete information as they wish. Users, such as crew members, may be affiliated to a boat data type but will not be able to amend any of the details.
Basic data requirements can he seen below.
Fleader C\I Personal unique ID r * Boat ID * Personal data type (Owner, Skipper, Crew) LI) Personal Log Personal Details (required) * First Name * Last Name * Usernarne * Email Address Personal Details (optional) * Address * Telephone number * Mobile number About me * Free text area for user to write about himself * Make private / visible to crew / visible to friends / public Sailing Experience * Free text area for user to give information about their sailing experience * Make private / visible to crew / visible to friends / public Certification See Figure 27 for an example of certification display.

BOAT DATA
The Boat Data contains all the parameters required to be stored in the Boat Owner's profile.
r The following list of fields makes up the boat data: o Header LI) Unique Boat ID C\J 20 Mooring Manager's unique ID Main user input * Boat Name * Avatar/Picture Type * Manufacturer * Year * HIN: Registration Number (see http: / /boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.htm) * Max number of persons * Max load * Dry weight * Designation (pleasure/commercial) Details user input Note: When the boat make is entered, the following information should be automatically known if the database contains a table of parameters of known boat models. The parameters below can be filled in from this information. Even with this, it is intended to give the user a chance to change these values as not all makes of boat are made the same dimensions. Either this is already available or a known boat makes' database can be aggregated over time as users fill in their boat details. Then this could be used to check validity of input and to auto fill fields when these are known with confidence.

PASSAGE PLANNING DATA TYPE
Passage planning data can be affiliated to a boat data type or personal data type; it may be linked to a Boat Owner's account or a crew member's account. A Boat Owner / Skipper can create a passage plan using the tool on the site. The passage planning utility is constructed on the Google map using the Google API to create hyperlinked icons for mooring opportunities. A route can be plotted on the map by pin pointing destinations. Distance between points is calculated and displayed in nautical miles. From these points, a mooring may be booked through hyperlinked icons (for further details see Boat Owner User Story). The passage plan can be shared with crew members or friends, or can be made public and visible to visitors of the site. c\J r
The fields that make up the passage planning data are as follows: Header Passage name
* Description
Details * Date from * Date to Starting location * Destination(s) Admin * Share with friends / crew (by email) * Make public?
PASSAGE LOG
Account holders can create and store a log on the site. By sending SMS messages, emails or online updates, the current location is geotagged on the Google map APT passage planner and the route is plotted. The user can add text and photos to these tags. Consecutive messages are linked by date and time to form the log (for an example of how this is already done see http://blog.mailasail.com/dreamcatcher which tracks SY Dreamcatcher on her Atiantic circuit).
Extending the functionality offered by MailaSail, the site knows the crew's mobile numbers so the incoming images and emails are sent to the current passage plan valid for that boat / crew combination. No message pre-fix is required. However, if the mobile number is not already added by a GPS enabled device, a geo-fix will have to be appended to the message by the sender.
If this is absent, the photos and texts ate located in a predefined list. The following is a list of
fields that are used to create a passage log.
H cadet * Passage unique ID Passage Detail * Passage state (current/archive) * Passage Name o Passage start date IS) Passage end date C"J 20 * Text entries * Picture entries Linked data * Linked Boat data ID * Linked Personal data ID
USER PAGES
A user may have four different groups of pages that will fulfil the four user activities of the following: * User home page: This contains booking activities and passage planning. The initial page the user sees when the user logs in.
* User settings page: Administrating activities, changing details etc. * User profile page: Viewing only aspects of the user home page which are made public.
Administration home page: Only visible to The Waypoint staff
MOORING MANAGER USER PAGES
The Mooring Manager user pages bring together the home data and the mooring data types described above.
MOORING MANAGER HOME PAGE
The Home Page shall contain tools to manage a number of moorings as detailed in the Mooring Managers User Story. From the home page the Mooring Manager can view all moorings hnked to the Mooring Manager's account (Figure 21), or he can drill down on a single mooring (Figure 19). All privately held moorings are linked to a Mooring Manager's account, therefore a Boat Owner's account with a listed berth will be linked to the Mooring Manager's account.
From the home page a Mooring Manager is able to view the boat data and personal data of the Boat Owner's account that has been used to book a mooring in the Mooring Manager's account (Figure 18).
N.. MOORING MANAGER SETTINGS PAGE The settings page allows Mooring Managers to change the home data of their account. Here the user can alter the information provided when setting up the account and add further details or pictures. This enables the Mooring Manager to ensure details about services provided are up to date.
MOORING MANAGER PROFILE PAGE
This page displays the information input on the Settings page and therefore is edited only by the account holder using the Settings page. It is the page that is visible to all other users; both members and visitors (Figure 17).
MOORING MANAGER ADMIN PAGE
The Mooring Manager is able to view and download statistics and data about bookings made for his marina. A history of bookings is available to show which members have made bookings and which berths have received the most bookings. Financial trends will also he made available. This information will be available to download as a CSV file.
Providing this information enables the marina to acknowledge trends in their business in order to produce future marketing plans. From this information it is also anticipated that the Mooring Manager \vffl offer incentives to his berth holders in order to increase business.
BOAT OWNER USER PAGES
The Boat Owners pages bring together the boat data and personal data but also utihses mooring data.
BOAT OWNER HOME PAGE
The Boat Owner's home page contains tools to manage the user's boat data, future bookings and mooring data. The user is able to drill up and down on the information to view linked accounts, e.g. that of a Mooring Manager \vho holds his berth or a berth he has booked Figure 12).
BOAT OWNER SETTINGS PAGE
The Boat Owner settings page enables the user to edit all the data connected to his account. This includes personal data, boat data and mooring data (Figure 7). r
N.. BOAT OWNER PROFILE PAGE The Boat Owner profile page is visible to all members and users of the site. It displays the information the user has consented to being made public.
WEBSITE MANAGEMENT
SUPER-USER ACCESS
Super-User access is only available to Administrators of The Waypoint. A Super-User is able to adapt and modir the content and functionality of the site.
UPDATE WEBSITE SETTINGS AND DYNAMICS
Commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) solutions will be used to build and maintain the site. As the website is based upon these ready to use programmes, the Super-User is responsible for keeping ensuring the tools used on the website are kept up to date by installing the latest versions when they become available. It is necessary to ensure the platfonns used are compatible with all browsers and are PC and Mac friendly.
ACCESS TO CODE
The Super-User writes and alters the coding used to build the site. He also has access to version control. Using a COTS version control solution the Super-User will be notified of any changes occurring to the substance of the site. He can then respond to this with appropriate coding to ensure the site continues to run smoothly and logically.
SQL ACCESS TO DATA TABLES
SQL allows access to data stored by a RDBMS. This means the Super-User can access all the information contained in the site which is stored in databases. Through this the Super-User is able use data mining techniques to discover trends in the use of the site.
ACCESS TO EVIDENTIARY DATA
A COTS evidentiar data store should he considered (in the hght of size of product, financial risk/exposure, security, venerability). This would create a database of all the personal data entered by members which would allow the Super-User to monitor use of and access to the site and enable data mining. Access to this information will allow the Waypoint to document trends in its usage and membership. r
N.. MANAGER-USER ACCESS Manager-User access is for general day to day management of the site. Through this user interface, The Waypoint tll be able to respond to quedes and user problems listed on the Help page and conduct general maintenance.
IMPORT AND EXPORT DEFINED FILES
A Manager-User is able to import users and user data in hulk. This may be used when importing a large number of Mooring Managers and their associated moorings list. Mooring Managers will hopefully want to import their berth holders to the system in bulk using this method. This may be a management function or a user function.
The Manager-User may also export data files such as lists of members or history of bookings, either in general through a site or specific to a single Mooring Pvlanager or berth.
FINANCIAL REPORTING AND ANALYSIS
Boat owners and mooring managers will want to get financial reports. It is proposed to give a number of standard reports to the users. However, more reports can be generated upon request on a fee-paying basis. Standard reports might be as follows: * Financial transaction report * Number of hits * Amount of interest from visits * Vacancy rates (of moorings) These reports can be formatted, or downloaded to CSV files for offline processing.
COMPANY INFORMATION
The Manager-User is able to update pages displaying company information. Examples of this are the About Us' page, contact information, and the press page. Keeping this up to date is essential to ensure The Waypoint is an amenable and approachable company. r
MODERATOR ACCESS
b Forums will be built using COTS solutions and will be accessed by all members. The site will 14) allow active users of the forums to become moderators and have overarching privileges on CsJ 20 forum content and direction.
ADMINISTRATOR ACCESS TO USER GENERATED FORUMS
Using a COTS format, the forum will be accessible by all members. Members will be able to start new threads between themselves. The Moderator will he able to access all forums on the site in order to ensure they are being used within the terms and conditions of the site or to add to discussions keeping members informed of any updates or news from The Waypoint.
CHANGE FORUM NAMES
The Moderator may change the names of running forums. This may be necessary to make it obvious to new users what the forum is discussing.
DELETE INAPPROPRIATE FORUMS

USER FEEDBACK
Users of the site can communicate with Administrators using two platforms; the feedback forum and the help page.
FEEDBACK FORUM
A CFeedback tab is featured on the site at all times. Through clicking on this the user is taken to the Feedback Forum. Once here the user is able to leave positive or negative feedback about the site or simply share their ideas.
The Administrator is able to view the feedback and either address problems that are occurring or put forward ideas for future development. This ensures the site is as user friendly as possible and letting users voice their opinions creates a sense of community and membership.
This forum is separate to and different from the user forums which are intended to be used socially to share experiences or general conversation. r
N.. HELP PAGE The Help Page features a place for users to request help with any problems they have incurred using the site. The Administrator is responsible for reading these queries and responding efficiently.
FAQs are hsted on this page. Where a question is being asked repeatedly, this should he added, with a reply, to the FAQ hst.
It is intended to add a live chat feature to the Help Page. When this is working, an Administrator will be signed in to the chat room and able to respond to queries instantly.
ERROR REPORTS
When browsing websites, users occasionally incur errors which flag up an error page. Instead of using the generic error pages of a white background with black text, the site will have its own personahsed error pages using The Waypoint logo and nautical terms to explain \vhat has happened. This makes the process less frustrating for users and encourages them to keep using the site.
MAINTENANCE PAGE
When a page is down for maintenance purposes, e.g. the administrator is updating the site, a maintenance notice will appear. This explains to the user that the site is undergoing repair and will be working again shortly.
404 ERROR When a user tries to navigate to a page that cannot be found, a 404 error appears. This is generally due to a broken link or typing the address incorrectly.
500 ERROR A 500 error will occur when a request is unable to be fulfilled. This is due to a command being misunderstood and is usually due to a server or browser needing updating. When this error occurs, the administrator will be made aware and will be able to address and solve the problem.
As the Administrator is expected to regularly update the site it is unlikely this error will occur often. r

FINANCE: CREDIT AND CASH FLOW
THE WAYPOINT PROFIT MODEL
The primary objective is to get as many users as possible to sign up as members to our website in order to increase the activity on the site and the interest in blogs and sharing passage plans etc. By offering free accounts it is hoped that users will not hesitate to sign up.
An advantage of signing up for Mooring Managers is that multiple transactions can be processed without a bank or card transaction charge. When Boat Owners make a booking with the marina directly, each transaction will be subject to a charge. It should therefore be preferable for marinas to use the site encouraging them to sign up as members.
The Waypoint will earn a profit through the users as they make bookings. The profit model is detailed in Figure 28 and described below: * Visitors: The Waypoint takes a transaction fee when a booking is made through the site.
* Free Member: The Waypoint takes a transaction fee when a booking is made through the site.
* Paid Member: The Waypoint takes membership fee but no transaction fee.
CASH FLOW OF A BOOKING
When a member decides to book a mooring through the \vebsite, a series of payments and credits ensues: * A member buys credits using Sagepay, PayPal or other provided payment system. The cash is credited into The \Vaypoint client account and the value is displayed in the form of credits on the member's account.
* The member makes a booking. The status of the mooring changes from vacant to occupied.
* The Waypoint subtracts an agreed transaction fee and the remaining amount is transferred to the Mooring Manager's client account.
* An agreed percentage is split to the Boat Owner who is the berth holder and his account is credited. This is at the marina's discretion but is encouraged by The Waypoint.
* The Mooring Manager is able to withdraw cash from the client account held on his behalf by The Waypoint.
The financial transactions visitor mooring booking event is detailed in Figure 29.
NEWSLETTER
A newsletter wii be produced by The Wavpoint regularly (fortnightlv or monthly. It will include relevant news and updates including events taking place. It may also include a feature story of a particular area.
The newsletter will provide the opportunity for businesses, such as marinas or local pubs, to sponsor articles. This provides businesses with an opportunity to advertise to members and it provides The Waypoint with another source of revenue.
The newsletter will be available to read on the website. Visitors to the site are able to view the current newsletter but not previous issues. Members have access to past editions of the newsletter and will receive a copy via email to their registered email address using the database of member's personal information. c\J r
