Abstract

The vehicle has one or more sockets to receive a plugs with pins of portable devices at the required supply voltage for the devices. Such socket(s) can accept a plurality of internationally recognised plugs to allow portable devices to be plugged into the electric vehicle's power supply.

Description

VEHICLE ELECTRIC SOCKETS
Vehicles such as cars often have a relatively low voltage (12.8 volts from a typical dc battery) to supply or help to supply power to the electrical systems of the vehicle.
Some portable devices such as computers, electric shavers and the like are desirably used or charged away from fixed power supplies. A particular difficulty arises for international travellers away from their home country, whose portable devices may have plugs which are not compatible with the local sockets.
The invention proposes the access of such devices to the mobile power supply in vehicles. Presently vehicles do not have any plug sockets to allow portable devices to be plugged into the vehicle's power supply at substantially the normal supply voltage of for the standard of the plug concerned, except a cigarette lighter.
According to the present invention, a vehicle has one or more sockets to allow portable devices having plugs with pins to be plugged into the vehicle's electrical systems power supply at substantially the normal supply voltage for the standard of the plug concerned.
In one embodiment the socket may receive a plurality of types of internationally recognised plugs.
In order to connect to conventional international plugs on portable devices, an alternator and voltage step up means would need to be provided in the circuit connecting the would need to be provided in the circuit connecting the batteries to the socket so that ac current at the appropriate voltage was provided to the socket. For many standards a 220 to 240 volt supply would be required, but also a 110 volt supply would be provided to parts of the socket to receive pins on portable devices to operate at this voltage.
In a universal socket the apertures to receive pins can either be disposed in a cluster or in an array close to one another.
