Abstract

An access cover locking system comprising an electromagnet 3, an armature plate 2 and a control box. When energised the electromagnet holds the armature to secure / lock the access cover. The locking system may have an internal reed switch for support of alarm systems. The locking system may have an autodialer for remote alarm use. The locking system may have a timer to enable automatic locking out of hours. The device is intended to eliminate the unauthorised removal of underground fuel storage tank access covers. The electromagnetic lock 3 shown secured to the access cover frame 6 via two fixings and a bracket 4, with an armature plate 2 is secured to the access cover 5 directly beneath the lifting aperture 1. When the electromagnet is energised, as there is a holding force between the electromagnet 3 and the armature 2 the access cover 5 cannot be removed.

Description

COVERLOCK ELECTROMAGNETIC SECURITY DEVICE
This device relates to the use of an electromagnetic lock to secure underground fuel storage tank access covers. The device enables remote locking / unlocking of the access covers. Underground fuel storage tanks are increasingly becoming a target for fuel theft where very few deterrents are available.
Several problems exist with current security measures available at present. For
example:
Some applications involve a steel security plate installed under the access cover. These do offer an acceptable method of security but due to their method of installation vulnerability to vandalism and costly damage to the surrounding facilities create a problem.
Security plates also offer no visual means of protection as storage tank contents labels (installed by law) are still visible through the plate advertising the contents.
These plates offer now means of remote alarming, alerting personnel to unauthorised access.
Essential maintenance work can be hindered due to the removal and reinstallation of such security plates where installed.
The coverlock electromagnetic device described herein overcomes these problems.
The diagram in figure 1 shows an example of an underground fuel storage tanks access cover (5) in place within the access cover frame (6). An electromagnetic lock (3) is fixed to a support bracket (4). This support bracket (4) is also attached to the access cover frame / wall (7). An Armature plate (2) is secured onto the access cover (5) directly beneath the lifting aperture (1).
The diagram in figure 2 shows a close up view of the electromagnet (17) and armature plate (18).
The diagram in figure 3 shows the circuit diagram of a typical installation.
The diagram in figure 4 shows a 5 core supply cable (8). This is wired to the electromagnet (3) and supplies a 12v dc current to it. Once energised the holding force is applied by the electromagnet (3) to the armature plate (2) holding the access cover (5) in place within the access cover frame (6).
The positioning of the armature plate (2) beneath the lifting aperture is essential for maximum holding force.
The electromagnet (3) is secured to a support bracket (4) which is secure by two fixings through the cover frame I wall assembly (7).
The supply cable (8) is constructed using S separate cores. Two cores supply the 12v + / 0 volts and the remaining three cores are for the normally closed switch outputs on the integral reed switch (10). This switched output would trigger in the event of an unauthorised removal of the access cover (5) while the electromagnet (3) is energised.
The electromagnet (3) is supplied by a 12v DC (16) supply. This supply is connected via a control box (9) which houses a 240 volt / 12v transformer (13).
Alternatively a timer (11) can be installed within the circuit to allow the electromagnet (3) to only become energised at chosen periods of the day.
Prior to the control box (9) a switched fuse (14) spur is installed to allow the deactivation of the electromagnet where maintenance is required.
More than one electromagnet (3) can be controlled by one control box (9).
Additional features tot the control box (9) would be the incorporation of an autodiler (14). This is where upon an alarm trigger form the electromagnet would create an output signal to an autodialer (14) alerting remote personnel.
This coverlock electromagnetic locking system not only prevents the unauthorised removal the access cover (5) but also alerts remote personnel if the were removed by other means. Visual advertising of the tanks contents labelling is also removed as the access cover (5) cannot be removed.

Claims (5)
