Abstract
A gear arrangement includes a gear rotatably mounted to a shaft 18 and a gear selection mechanism 32 operable to selectively couple the gear for rotation with the shaft 18. The gear selection mechanism 32 is located at least partially within a longitudinally extending bore 40 of the hollow shaft 18 and has a stellate or star-shaped gear selection member 36 which, in one embodiment, is movable axially by a gear selection rod 34 between a first axial position where the gear selection member 36 contacts the gear so that the gear is coupled for rotation with the shaft 18 and a second axial position where the gear is decoupled from the shaft 18. In another embodiment a selector member is mounted to a carriage on the rod.
