Abstract
The Bi-Directional Freecoaster is preferably used on a rear hub of a bicycle, preferably a BMX. It uses a selection of wedges (9, fig 2) that can engage the hub in both the forward and reverse directions. This allows drive to be applied when the pedals turn in both the forward and reverse directions and yet will also allow freewheeling in both the forward and reverse directions. The wedges (9, fig 2) are urged towards the hub by a driver (4, fig 2). The wedges are preferably retained in place via an O ring (10, fig 2).
Description
-"Bi-Directional Freecoaster"
Description
The patentable section of this product is the internal mechanism. All exterior components are standard and commonplace.
The hub is made up of a selection of components; the hub shell, axle, wedges (x2), driver, bearings, 0-ring, and lock nuts (please see figure 2.0). The wedge and driver design is the unique element of the hub's success. These are also the key components for the basis of the patent.
As the cyclist pedals, the driver is rotated, pushing the two internal wedges into engagement with the hub shell and rotating it. This happens when the cyclist is pedalling forwards and also when in reverse. The cyclist has the ability to accelerate in both directions. When the cyclist stops pedalling and ireewheels' the driver remains stationary and the wedges do not engage with the hub shell, leaving the hub shell to rotate in both directions freely.
This design is different because of the additional ability to re-engage in reverse and accelerate backwards. The wedges and driver design is the key to this capability. These specific components will need to be patented, however the relationship between these two components and the rest of the hub is also important. Primarily the axle and hub shell as the driver/wedges sit on the axle and engage with the hub shell.
All the externals of the hub will not need to be patented, just the internal mechanism and more specifically; the wedges and driver contact section with the wedges.
Drawing Descriptions
Sheet 113: Figure 1.0 -Moving Internals In figure 1.0 the driver is being turned by the cyclist (via a chain) which then pushes one side of the wedge(s) into engagement with the hub shell and rotates it. This can happen in both directions and the wedges will remain motionless in their original position if the driver does not turn.

The section view (B-B) reveals the actual mechanism inside. The hatched area denotes both the two wedges and how they make contact with the hub. The driver is shown in between the two wedges and continues out the right hand side of the hub where it would make contact with a chain.
Claims (9)
- Claims 1. When the wedges that are located inside the hub are stationary, the hub freewheels (rotates freely) in both directions. The wedges rest on the stationary driver.
- 2. The wedges engage with the hub shell only when the driver is rotated. This occurs when the rider starts to pedal in either direction. This causes the hub shell to rotate consequently.
- 3. There are no conical or plate clutches inside the hub, only the wedges.
- 4. The internals of the hub are the only elements that are being requested a patent. All external attributes do not need patenting.
- 5. Any number of wedges can be used inside this specific mechanism.
- 6. The wedges do not have the hit the hub shell directly, additional layers or components may be incorporated.
- 7. The driver will connect directly to the chain via a selection of teeth, complying with the chain standard.
- 8. The wedges are described as curved plates that make contact with the hub shell when activated by the driver.
- 9. An o-ring or any retracting device may be used to keep the wedges in their original resting position on the driver and out of contact with the hub shell.
