Abstract

The measuring device has one measuring wheel c with two opposed tensioned wheels I allowing a flexible material 2 of variable thickness to pass between them. The flexible material, such as carpet, is fed by hand through the measuring device. A digital display f fig. 4 shows the amount of material that has been measured. A length to be measured may be pre-programmed. The device has visual warning lights I,m,n and an audible warning k to alert the operator that the pre-programmed length has been reached. When the desired length is reached the measuring wheel c and tension wheels can be locked using the locking trigger a fig. 5 to hold the device in place so a measuring pin can be placed between the mark pointer j allowing an accurate marked pin left in the flexible material thus allowing it to be cut accurately. The handheld device has an ergonomic handle and design.

Background
This invention relates to a device that measures flexible material accurately.
When flexible material such as carpet is measured from a roll, it is usually meas-ured by hand with a metre stick. The result being that the measurement is often inaccurate and the material is either too long, incurring waste or to short incurring waste and further expense usually involving refitting in the case of carpet.
Statement of invention
To overcome the problems of inaccurate measurement the present invention pro- poses, a hand held device with a rotating measuring wheel which is linked to digi-tal software and hardware that can be pre-programmed to measure an exact length.
Advantages The measuring wheel will measure accurately to a precise pre-programmed length, allowing the material required to be cut accurately.
The measuring device will have a touch-button keypad and visual display for easy reference and use.
The device will have an ergonomically designed handle and shock absorbent case, ensuring ease of use and longevity.
Detailed description
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings: In Figure 1 a flexible material 2 is located on a stand 1 and is measured by a technician 4 using a meter rule 3 placed on the surface of the material the meter rule is then repositioned by the technician repeatedly or as required to measure required length of material.
In Figure 2 the invention 5 is held by the technician 4 and the flexible material is then fed by hand through the invention and pushed along the salvage of the material being measured until the desired length is met.
In Figure 3 the invention S showing the measuring wheel c and the tension wheels i that create the friction between the measured material 2 and the measuring wheel c.
In Figure 4 the invention S shows the side elevation of the invention detailing the key functions. The trigger release button b which unlocks the measuring wheel c and tension wheels I when pressed. Mechanism release button e which is used to release the measuring mechanisms c and i for ease of cleaning. Visual display f which displays the required length of material to be measured. Ergonomic handle g for ease of use and carrying. Electronic touch pad h used for entering the desired length of material to be measured.
The mark pointerj is position at the correct point in relation to the measuring wheel I that allows the technician 4 to place a measuring pointer in the case of a flexible material such as carpet is usually a 7 cm steel pin. Acoustic warning speaker k alerts the technician 4 by a series of progressively louder and shorter spaced audio tones that the required length of material is being reached. Warning light I provides a visual indication that the technician is reaching the prescribed length of material. Warning light m provides a visual indication that the technician has reached the prescribed length of material. Warning light n provides a visual indication that the technician has exceeded the prescribed length of material, when the technician pulls the device backwards along the salvage of the material the warning light m will then be displayed.
