Abstract

A temporary isolation barrier to prevent the operation of an electrical switch comprises a hinged lockable housing to conceal the switch. The housing may be formed by a back plate permanently hinged to a front cover that can be held closed by a tie wrap or small padlock. The housing back plate may be attached to a face of the switch by the switch's retaining screws, and a safety notice may be affixed to the front cover. The isolation barrier prevents operation of the switch while work is being carried out on appliances having an electrical supply connected to the switch.

A Temporary Isolation Barrier For Electrical Switches This invention relates to a device to temporarily prevent the operation of an electrical switch.
It is suited to domestic trades such as gas and electrical engineers, enabling them to work safely, in the knowledge that the electrical circuit is isolated locally without the need to shut down the electrical supply to the property.
When maintaining or repairing electrical appliances, and during central heating installations, engineers are at risk from accidental or deliberate tampering with electrical switches. This invention, being a lockable localised isolation barrier, provides the engineers with the means to prevent such tampering.
As well as being an important aid to safe working practices, the invention will protect anyone in the working area from injury as a result of the unwitting operation of an electrical switch.
This invention is a one-piece hinged unit, preferably made from 1.5mm thick bonded polypropylene plastic to make it flexible and durable.
As shown in Figure 1, two screw holes are provided in the back plate. The screws holding the electHcal switch in place are loosened sufficiently (1.5mm -2mm) to enable the screw heads to protrude through the holes in the back plate, which is then positioned so the screws can be tightened to secure it. The protecting cover is then hinged over the back plate and secured by means of a tie wrap or small padlock.

Claims (4)

  1. CLAIMS1. A temporary isolation barrier for electrical switches, comprising a hinged, lockable housing to conceal a switch.
  2. 2. A temporary isolation barrier according to Claim 1, wherein the back plate of the housing is attachable to the face of the switch by means of the switch's retaining screws.
  3. 3. A temporary isolation barrier according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the front cover of the housing is permanently hinged to the back plate and held in a closed position by means of a tie wrap or small padlock.
  4. 4. A temporary isolation barrier according to Claim 3, wherein the front cover of the housing enables a safety notice to be affixed to it.
