Abstract
A cable tidy 10 is used to store an electrical cable that supplies electricity to an electrical appliance (e.g. power tool or gardening, domestic or building equipment), wherein the cable tidy 10 comprises: a spool part 16, around which the cable is wound; and holes 18-20 to receive contact pins of a cable-end plug in push-fit engagement. The cable tidy 10 may comprise shoulder means 15 on each side of the spool part 16 which are wider than the spool part 16 and may comprise slots 17 to retain loose cable by friction. The cable tidy 10 may comprise a means (e.g. hanger part 12) to hang or suspend the cable tidy upon the appliance, wherein the spool part 16 is rotatable relative to the hanging/suspending means 12. The spool part 16 may be substantially cylindrical or it may be substantially flat with curved or round edges to prevent damage to cable. Curved or rounded beading may be formed integrally with, or attached on, the edges of the spool part 16. A clip may retain one part of the cable relative to another part of the cable which is wound on the spool part 16. The cable tidy 10 and electrical appliance may be permanently associated with each other.
Description
Electrical Appliance Comprising Cable Tidy System The present invention relates to an electrical appliance comprising a cable tidy system.
Many electrical appliances comprise a cable for supplying electricity to the electric motor of the appliance and a plug for connecting the cable to an electricity mains supply socket. Examples of such appliances include horticultural implements such as lawnmowers, hedge-cutters, tools such as drills, screwdrivers, and domestic machinery such as vacuum cleaners, etc. The cable is often lengthy so that the appliance can be used at a relatively remote location from the supply socket. For example, cables may be 15 to 20m in length. A problem with such appliances is that there is not always provision for accommodating or storing the cable, particularly when the appliance is not in use. In consequence, the user tends to wind the cable into loops which are themselves inconvenient and which, moreover, can give rise to knots and kinks which can, in time lead to cracks in the insulation of the cable.
An object of the present invention is to provide an electrical appliance powered via a cable which mitigates the problem arising with prior electrical appliances.
The present invention provides an electrical appliance combination as defined in claim 1 of the set of claims following this description. Optional and/or preferred features of the combination are specified in the other claims of the set of claims following this description.
Embodiments of the invention, given by way of non-limitative example only, are now described with reference to the diagrammatic drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of cable tidy used in a combination according to the invention; Figure 2 shows the cable tidy of Figure 1 with a cable and plug supplying an electrical appliance Figure 3 shows a cross-sectional plan view of a part of the body of the cable tidy.
Referring first to Figure 1, the cable tidy is indicated generally by reference 10, and comprises a flat, rigid or relatively rigid, body 11 of metal, plastics or wood and a hanger part 12. The body has approximately the shape of a house with a pitched roof, e.g., the form of a semi-symmetrical pentagon. The lower part 13 of the body 11 is generally rectangular, and the upper part 14 of the body is generally triangular. The hanger part 12 is in the form of a hook, and extends upwards away from the apex region of the upper part 14. The lower part 13 has projecting shoulders 15 at its upper and lower regions. Between pairs of shoulders 15 on each side of the body 11 Is defined a cable spool part 16 around which electrical cable or cord can be wound and stored between uses of the electrical appliance. On each edge of the spool part 16 is provided a slot in which cable can be jammed to prevent the cable slipping and/or unwinding from the spool part 16. The slots 17 shown in Fig. 1 are 1.-shaped, but they may have other suitable forms. As shown in Fig. 1, the left hand slot 17 is low on the left hand edge of the spool part 16 and the right hand slot 17 is higher on the right hand edge. This arrangement facilitates the anchoring of one spooled end of a cable in (say) the left slot 17, the cable being wound around the spool part 16, and the other unspooled end being anchored in the right-hand slot 17. The cable tidy can be hung from a suitable projection by means of the hanger part 12. The projection (not shown) may be on the appliance or elsewhere (e.g., on a wall). The upper part 14 of the cable tidy 10 has one or more sets of suitable holes to receive and frictionally retain the electrical connector pins (not shown) of the plug (not shown in Fig. 1) so that the plug can easily be found when required. In Fig. 1, there are three sets of holes, 18, 19, 20, one for each common type of connector pin array. The holes 18 are for the pins of a two-pin plug having pins of rectangular cross-section. The holes 19 are for the pins of a three pin plug having pins of rectangular section. The holes 20 are for the pins of a two pin plug having pins of circular cross section.
In Figure 2, cable 21 is wound around the lower part of the cable tidy of Fig. 1, and the plug 22 (e.g., a three-pin plug) is shown detached from its respective set of holes 19 in the cable tidy 10. The other end 22 of the cable 21 is connected to the electrical appliance (not shown), e.g., a tool. When the plug 22 Is frictionally engaged with the respective set of holes, unwanted unwinding of cable 21 from the body 11 is prevented.
In Figure 3, it will be seen that at least the spool part 16 of the body 11 is formed or provided with curved or rounded edges to avoid damage to cable wound thereon. The curved edges may be formed integrally with the spool part 16 (e.g., by a rolling operation, known per se, in which each edge is curved back on itself) or by attaching or forming a curved beading 25 over each edge. The curved beading may be of plastics material or of metal. In one embodiment, each curved beading Is of generally part-circular cross-section with a longitudinal slot in which the respective edge of the part 16 is received. The beading 25 may be retained on the edge by friction and/or by adhesive.
Similar provisions to mitigate damage to the cable may be employed at the slots 17. Preferably, a beading, not shown, (e.g., of plastics material) is formed or attached over the edge(s) in the slots 17, and retained by friction and/or by adhesive.
in an exemplary embodiment given by way of non-limitative illustration, the body 11 has a maximum width of 300mm, a height of 160mm excluding the hanger part 12. The lower part 13 of the body has a height of 120mm. The hanger part 12 has a height of 80mm and a width of 90mm.
In other embodiments, the hanger part 12 may be replaced by a loop (not shown), which may be formed integrally with the flat rigid piece as the body 11, or the loop may be a loop of flexible material such as wire, cord, cable, string etc. In other embodiments, the hanger part 12 (of any of the types disclosed) may be rotatably connected to the body liso that the hanger part 12 and the body 11 can rotate relative to each other permitting the hanger part 12 to locate in a different vertical plane to the body 11. These embodiments facilitate storage in crowded locations.
The combination of the invention may comprise one or more U-shaped flexible clips (not shown) for securing parts of the cable 21 to each other to prevent unwanted unwinding of wound cable on the body 11, especially when the cable is tightly wound around the spool part 16 of the body 11.
The combination of the invention provides a convenient means of storing cable of an electrical appliance, and in suitable instances, of storing the appliance. In embodiments where the body 11 is flat, the space required for cable storage is minimised. The combination is easy to carry, and cable of any length and thickness can be stored on the cable tidy.
