Abstract

A pipe-pushing apparatus (l) is provided for use in laying a length of pipe and is adapted to form an attachment for a conventional excavator vehicle and to be mounted at the end of an arm of such a vehicle instead of a conventional bucket. The apparatus (1) comprises a bracket (2) adapted for connection to the arm of the vehicle and a pair of clamping jaws (3, 4) defining an interior clamping profile (5). An upper clamping jaw (3) of the pair is mounted on the bracket (2) and a lower clamping jaw (4) of the pair is pivotally mounted to the upper clamping jaw (3) along a pivot axis located at one side of the apparatus so that the lower clamping jaw is located beneath the length of pipe when the apparatus is in use. At least one ram (9) for opening and closing the clamping jaws (3, 4) is provided and located on a side of the apparatus (1) opposite the pivot axis (7). One end of the ram (9) is connected to the upper clamping jaw (3) and the other end of the ram (9) is connectable to the lower clamping jaw (4) to pivot the lower clamping jaw (4) relative to the upper clamping jaw (3) and is disconnectable from the lower clamping jaw (4) to enable the lower clamping jaw (4) to be pivoted manually relative to the upper jaw (3) and thereby located initially beneath the length of pipe. Preferably, one or more sets of shims (18a, 18b) are locatable within the jaws (3, 4) to change the size and/or shape of the clamping profile (5) formed when the jaws (3, 4) are closed.
