Abstract

The device comprises a thin flexible adhesive strip, with a perforation. The surgical cannula A is inserted through the perforation before insertion into the body of the human or veterinary patient. The backing is removed and the strip stuck to the cannula at B and to the skin at C, to prevent movement, slippage, or unintentional removal of the cannula when instruments are inserted or withdrawn from the cannula during surgery. The perforation may be a slit cross or circular hole.

Description

Atraumatic flexible adhesive minimally invasive surgery cannula fixation device This invention relates to a device to to atraumatically fix a minimally invasive surgey cannula to a patient's body surface by means of an adhesive flexible strip Minimally invasive surgery, such as laparoscopy, thoraooscopy, and arthroscopy rely on the insertion of cannula into body cavities, through which instruments and a surgical telescope or endoscope can be inserted to perform diagnostic investigations or surgical procedures.
Smooth external walled cannulas may move, or unintentionally come out of the body during instrument insertion or removal. This is particularly the case in smaller patients such as neonates and children, and small veterinary animal patients, which have a thin body wall. This thin body wall may not provide sufficient friction or tension on the cannula to prevent movement or inadvertent removal when instruments are moved inside the cannula. Some cannulas attempt to overcome this by providing a ridged external shaft wall, or a spiral thread, but these external shaft modifications increase the amount of tissue trauma and Irritation when cannulas are inserted, and these types of cannula do still loosen with movement and may unintentionally be removed by instrument movements.
Inadvertent removal of the cannula from the body wall due to instrument movement results in loss of insufflation in laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery and collapse of the working operating space. This results in a prolonged surgical procedure time and increased time required under anaesthesia. Inadvertent removal of the cannula also requires re-insertion of the cannula with increased tissue trauma resulting.
This invention provides a simple atraumatic, possibly disposable, means of securing surgical cannulas in place during minimally invasive surgical procedures, that is of particular benefit in small or thin human and veterinary patients. The invention, by prevention of movement of the cannula, also allows a minimal length of the cannula to protrude into the body cavity, Increasing the operative space available. This is particularly useful in smaller patients. This atraumatic device also allows the use of smoother surfaced, less traumatic cannula, in preference to a threaded or ridged cannula.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows the atraumatic flexible adhesive strip that has been applied to the cannula, folded on itself, with the horizontal ends that adhere to the body surface.
Figure 2 a-f show various configurations of slits in the strip that allow the entry of the cannula before application to the body surface.
The invention consists of a thin flexible adhesive strip, with a perforation. The surgical cannula A is inserted through the perforation before insertion into the body of the human or veterinary patient. The backing is removed and the strip stuck to the cannula B and skin C, to prevent movement, slippage, or unintentional removal of the cannula when instruments are inserted or withdrawn from the cannula. At the end of the surgical procedure the adhesive strip is detached from the skin before the cannula is removed from the body.

Claims (14)

  1. Claims 1. A flexible adhesive strip for the atraumatic fixation of a minimally invasive surgical cannula to the body surface of a human or veterinary patient.
  2. 2. An atraumatic flexible adhesive minimally invasive surgery cannula fixation device according to claim 1, which is disposable.
  3. 3. An atraumatic flexible adhesive minimally invasive surgery cannula fixation device according to claim 1, in which the material may be transparent, coloured, or be markable.
  4. 4. An atraumatic flexible adhesive minimally invasive surgery cannula fixation device according to claim 1, which may be disposable or reusable.
  5. 5. An atraumatic flexible adhesive minimally invasive surgery cannula fixation device according to claim 1, which is hypoallergenic.
  6. 6. An atraumatic flexible adhesive minimally invasive surgery cannula fixation device according to claim 1, which has rounded or straight ends.
  7. 7. An atraumatic flexible adhesive minimally invasive surgery cannula fixation device according to claim 1, which has one or both non-adhesive ends, which may or may not be marked to allow ease of removal from the patient at the end of surgery.
  8. 8. An atraumatic flexible adhesive minimally invasive surgery cannula fixation device according to claim 1, which may be dispensed from a roll.
  9. 9. An atraumatic flexible adhesive minimally invasive surgery cannula fixation device according to claim 1, which may be packaged individually with a removable backing.
  10. 10. An atraumatic flexible adhesive minimally invasive surgery cannula fixation device according to claim 9, with a removable backing that may be in a single part or in up to four separate parts.
  11. 11. An atraumatic flexible adhesive minimally invasive surgery cannula fixation device according to claim 1, in which the perforation for the cannula may be a slit, cross, or circular hole.
  12. 12. An atraumatic flexible adhesive minimally invasive surgery cannula fixation device according to claim 1, in which the adhesive properties of the strip may be due to a chemical adhesive or due to the mechanical self adhesive properties of the device surface.
  13. 13. An atraumatic flexible adhesive minimally invasive surgery cannula fixation device according to claim 1, which may be packaged in a sterile or unsterilized state.
  14. 14. An atraumatic flexible adhesive minimally invasive surgery cannula fixation device according to claim 1, which may be manufactured from plastic, cloth, or other materials, or material combinations.
