Abstract

A drive system for an electric vehicle consists of two or more motors A, D with a variable speed gearbox B, E on each motor connected independently to the road wheels via a drive shaft C, F. Each gearbox has two or more ratios which can be selected by engaging a clutch mechanism on each gear. The gears remain permanently meshed, engaging the clutches controls the gear ratio and torque path through the gearbox. Using a pre-meshed gear system allows the gear change to be achieved quickly and synchronised across all of the motor and gearbox units on the vehicle. The gears may be of a spur or helical type. The gearbox consists of primary shaft G, secondary shaft H and output shaft I. The gears are fixed to the secondary shaft using a clutch arrangement. When the clutch is disengaged the gear is free to rotate on the shaft.

Description

Design for a 2 or more motor electric vehicle drive system with a variable speed gearbox on each motor The present invention relates to an arrangement for the drive system of an electric vehicle consisting of 2 or more motors driving through separate variable ratio gearboxes to the road wheels. The motor is either an induction or permanent magnet AC type motor.
Each wheel is driven by an individual motor (A, B). This could be 2 wheel drive using 2 motors or 4 wheel drive using 4 motors. Each motor is connected to a discrete variable ratio gearbox unit (B, E). The output of the gearbox is connected to the road wheels of the vehicle via a drive shaft (C, F). The motor and gearbox is mounted inboard of the driven wheels.
Each gearbox has 2 or more ratios which can be selected by engaging a clutch device on each driven gear. The gears remain permanently meshed, but are only connected to the shaft to transmit torque by engaging the clutch. Using a pre-meshed gear system allows the gear change to be achieved quickly and synchronised across all of the motor and gearbox units on the vehicle.
The gears shall be of either spur or helical type. The gearbox consists of a primary shaft (G), secondary shaft (H) and an output shaft (I). The gears are fixed to the secondary shaft using a clutch arrangement. When the clutch is disengaged the gear is free to rotate on the shaft. When the clutch is locked the gear is fixed to the shaft.
The design of the gearbox allows for the gear changing to be synchronised between the gearboxes. The clutches are actuated by an electromechanical or hydraulic actuator or magnetic system. The actuator arrangement drives a wedge into the clutch which locks it into position or energises an electro magnet which engages the clutch.
The changing of engaged gears is controlled by a central electronic controller to ensure gear shifting is controlled accurately and synchronised between the gearboxes. The electronic control system also controls the torque output of the motors in response to driver demand and driving conditions. The correct functioning of the gearbox is checked by the control algorithm shown in drawings. The controller momentarily limits the torque output of the electric motor as the gear ratio is changed by disengaging and engaging clutches to allow a smooth gear change. The motor speed and output shaft speed is monitored continuously, by monitoring the motor speed and output shaft speed the controller can detect when the gearbox is in gear and when it is transition ing between gears.
The output of each gearbox is connected to the road wheels of the vehicle via a drive shaft. The motor and gearbox assemblies are mounted in-board of the wheels of the vehicle. The output of the gearbox may be connected to a further fixed reduction ratio gearbox of either a spur, helical gear or toothed belt drive.
A vehicle with 2 motors would drive 2 road wheels giving a 2 wheel drive vehicle. A vehicle with 4 motors would drive 4 road wheels giving a four wheel drive vehicle.
