Abstract
A bracket 1 for mounting a pole or rope handle to a coffin 7 is made of natural sustainable material, e.g. wood, and is bolted to the coffin through a fixing hole 4 that, in use, is concealed by the handle which is received in a handle hole 3. Pairs of brackets may be mounted to the coffin to allow a rope or wooden pole to form a handle that spans the brackets and is spaced from the coffin to provide secure handling by pole bearers [as shown in Fig. 5]. In use, forces are transmitted from the handle to the fixing bolt. The bracket provides an environmentally friendly means of mounting a handle to a coffin making it suitable for green burials as well as conventional burials and cremations.
Description
Coffin/Receptacle Handle Bracket
Background of the Invention
Typically a Coffin or Receptacle is made of wood or a Wood by-product with the exception of the carrying handies which were originally metal and are now usually plastic to look like metal with a brass or chrome effect finish, The invention of this bracket/handle gives Funeral Directors an alternative method of handling a coffin that is environmentally friendly and could be used on traditional coffins to inter in a green field burial ground. This invention relates to the bracket attaching the handle to the coffin to enable a coffin to be lifted and lowered and is designed primarily to be used with a rope handle but the handle could be of wood or metal, 2 brackets are required to make 1 handle each bracket is bolted to the coffin and does not require the handle to support the bracket
Statement of invention
It is the object of this invention to form a wooden bracket to support rope or wood to form a handle in such a manner that the forces are transferred 9Odegs to the coffin or receptacle without any unobtrusive fixing been seen to allow a coffin or receptacle to be moved and transported in a safe and dignified manner.
Description for Fig. 1-5
Fig 1-4 shows 4 views of a bracket Fig 5 shows how the brackets are positioned to form a pair also showing how the handle covers the fixing bolt giving a concealed fixing 1. Wood Bracket 2. Direction of Grain 3. Hole for Rope or Wood Handle 4. Hole for Bolt to fix bracket to side of Coffin or Receptacle 5. Handle hole not to greater than wood to all sides 6. Thickness of timber can be increased to give more access for handling.
7. Side of coffin or Receptacle.
8. Wood Brackets positioned ready to receive handle 9. It can be seen that a Rope or wood handle placed across the 2 brackets through the handle hole the fixing bolt would be concealed not been showing from the face of the bracket.
10. It can be seen that a Rope handle placed across the 2 brackets through the handle hole the Rope could be restrained to the flat side of each bracket by knotting the Rope at both ends thus stopping the rope pulling out of the bracket when a force to carrying or lifting the coffin or receptacle is placed on the Rope between the 2 brackets.
11. it can be seen that a Wood handle placed across the 2 brackets through the handle hole the Wood could be restrained to the flat side of each bracket by fitting a finial over the handle at both ends thus stopping the handle pulling out of the bracket when a force to carrying or lifting the coffin or receptacle is placed on the Wood handle between the 2 brackets.
12. Shows the forces being transferred 9odeg from the handle to the fixing Bolt.
13. Fixing Bolt.
Description
The invention covers the bracket and the way the bracket is fixed but not the fixing bolt or the handle It is envisaged that 4 or 6 handles (8 or 12 brackets) will be used per coffin The bracket is made of wood used in pairs to support rope or wooden handle to enable Coffins or Receptacle to be safely handled, carried and lifted and also enables webbing or like straps to be threaded through the handle when lowering the coffin or receptacle.
The bracket is bolted through the wall or side of a coffin or receptacle with a nut on the inside with or without a washer this method of fixing transfers the forces 9Odegs both horizontally and vertically The fixing of the bracket is concealed as it is covered by the rope or wooden handle that spans the 2 brackets The bracket has a hole to attach the handle, the positioning of this hole spaces the handle off the coffin allowing access between the handle and the coffin to grip the handle for secure handling by the pole bearers 2 of the same brackets make a pair The wooden bracket is made with the end grain to the coffin.
The hole in the bracket for the fixing bolt is enlarged to allow the head of the bolt not to obstruct the handle.
The hole for the handle can be increased or decreased as long as the hole is not larger than the width of the timber to the side of the hole.
The thickness of timber between the handle hole and the Coffin or Receptacle can be increased to give more access for handling, carrying and lifting.
