Description

Title: Louvre Shutter and Louvre Shutter Frame Assembly The present invention relates to a louvre shutter and louver shutter frame assembly.
Wooden louvre shutters are known. They are used as an alternative to Venetian blinds or curtains and pairs of one or more shutters are hinged either side of the inside of a window.
They normally have a frame supporting slats which can be rotated relative to the frame to control light levels and the amount of ventilation received in a room when the are hinged closed over a window. They can be hinged open to expose the window if required.
A problem with these wooden shutters is that, if a window is open but with the hinged closed, an intruder can break through the shutters into a building.
The invention seeks to provide a louver shutter which offers more security and which is easy to customise in size for any window.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a louvre shutter comprising at least one pair of shutter frames hinged together, each frame having opposing first and second side stiles and rotating louvers between the opposing stiles, and at least one bolt extendible from the top and/or bottom of a stile in at least one frame adapted to be received in a recess adjacent the top and/or bottom of a window respectively.
Preferably the or each bolt is provided on second side stile of a second frame, and a second side stile of a first frame is hinged to the first side stile of a second frame by a hinge on one side face of the frames.
Preferably control means rotates all the louvers simultaneously.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a louver shutter frame assembly comprising: a) first and second opposing inner stiles, b) top and bottom rails connected to the inner stiles, c) rotating louvres between the stiles and top and bottom rails, and d) first and second outer stiles to connected respectively to the inner stiles, and e) a cavity between the first inner and outer stile and a cavity between the second inner and outer stile.
Preferably each outer stile slides onto its respective the inner stile to connect each outer style to a respective inner stile.
Preferably means to rotate all the louvers simultaneously is provided in the cavity between an inner and outer stile. Cover cog and chain Preferably a lock is provided in the cavity between an inner and outer stile. Cover shoot bolt Preferably end caps are provided to cover ends of the inner and outer stiles.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows perspective view of a louvre shutter according to a first aspect of the invention, and Figure 2 shows a part assembled perspective view of a louver shutter frame.
Referring to Figure 1 there is shown a window "A" in a wall "B as is well known in the art.
Window "A" is viewed from the inside of a building.
A louvre shutter 1 is provided to cover half of window "A". Louvre shutter 1 has a pair of first and second shutter frames 10,20 hinged together by hinges 21A,21B. First shutter 1 is hinged to the wall "B" by hinges 1 IA,! lB.
Frame 10 has opposing first and second side vertical stiles 12A,12B and rotating louvers 13 between the opposing stiles. Frame 20 has opposing first and second side vertical stiles 22A,22B and rotating louvers 23 between the opposing stiles.
A pair of "shoot" bolts 24A,24B are extendible from the top and bottom of second stile 22B of second frame 20 adapted to be received in recesses 25A,25B adjacent the top and bottom of a window "A" respectively.
The second side stile 12B of a first frame 10 is hinged to the first side stile 22A of a second frame 20 by hinges 21 A,2 LB on one inside face of the frames.
If it is attempted to break through the louver shutter formed by frames 10,20 with the bolts 24A,24B extended into apertures 25A,25B, the frames are secured by the bolts 24A,24B. Also if an inward force is applied to the outside of the frames 10,20 adjacent the join between the frames 10,20, the hinges on the inside of the face of the frames will cause the edge of the second stile 12B to abut the edge of the first steel 22A so preventing the join between the frames from being pushed in.
Control means to rotate all the louvers simultaneously may be provided to vary the amount of light let in by the louvers.
A second louver shutter formed from frames 30,40 may be provided to cover the other half of window "A".
A control device such as a lock 26 controls movement of the bolts 24A,24B as well as operating a clasp 27 to secure frame 40 to frame 20.
Each frame with its stiles and louvres is preferably formed from metal such as aluminium to provide a security louver shutter.
It is possible for each louver shutter to be made of more than two frames and may have more than one bolt. In this case it is anticipated that where possible, hinges are on the inside face of frames joining stiles, and where possible the or each bolt is provided on second side stile of a second frame, and a second side stile of a first frame is hinged to the first side stile of a second frame by a hinge on one side face of the frames.
Referring now to Figure 2, there is shown a louver shutter frame assembly 50 which may be of the type shown in Figure 1 such as frame 10,20,30 or 40.
Frame assembly 50 has first and second opposing inner stiles in the form of elongate lengths of aluminium 60A,60B with apertures 61A,61B.
Top and bottom aluminium rails 70A,708 are provided either side of an aluminium middle rail 70C.
Rotating hollow aluminium louvres 80A,80B,80C,80D are provided between the inner stiles 60A,60B and top, middle and bottom rails 70A,70C,70B. Only four louvres are shown, but in practice more louvres would be provided as shown in Figure 1. Middle rail 70C may also be omitted. Louvres 80A,80B,SOC,80D have a plug 81 with a pivot pin 82 which pass through apertures 61A,61B to pivot the louvers to the inner stiles 60A,60B. Star clips 82A may secure inner stiles 60A,60B to the louvres 80A,80B,80C,80D.
On one side of louvers 80A,80B,80C,80D, pulley blocks 83 (or cogs) are fitted to the ends of pins 82 which are linked by loops of elastic 84 (or chain) which allow the louvers to co-rotate.
Pins 82 may be square in cross section to be received in a square aperture in blocks 83 to prevent the blocks rotating relative to the pins.
Steps 71A,71B,71C,71D in rails 70A,70B,70C provide stops to the long edges of louvers 80A,80B,80C,80D to limit their rotation.
First and second U-shaped outer aluminium stiles 90A,90B are to connected respectively to the inner stiles by sliding the inner stiles 60A,60B into opposing grooves 91A, 91B. Alternatively the first and second U-shaped outer aluminium stiles 90A,90B could "clip" into engagement with inner stiles. It will be seen that a cavity is provided between the first inner and outer stiles. Plastic end caps 92 are provided to cover ends of the inner and outer stiles. The cavity provided between the second inner and outer stile 60B,90B houses the blocks 83 and loops of elastic 84. Preferably a lock 110 is provided in the cavity an inner and outer stile 60A,90A.
Lock 110 may control bolts and a clasp similar to that shown in Figure 1.
Screws 100 pass through the outer stiles into the rails 70A,70B,70C to hold the frame together.
The design of the frame assembly allows frames of different sizes to be made easily. Inner and outer stiles can be extruded and cut to a desired length to adjust the height of a frame, and the upper middle and lower rails and louvers can be extruded and cut to length to adjust the width of a frame. The inner stiles, rails, louvers, blocks and loops of elastic can be assembled first and then the outer stiles can slide onto the inner styles and secured the upper middle and lower rails to complete the assembly.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
