Description

Title: Apparatus and system holding an item relative to a fixed body
Description of Invention
This invention relates to an apparatus and a system for holding an item relative to a fixed body More particularly, but not exclusively, the invention relates to an apparatus and system for holding an item, e g an electrical device securely in relation to a fixed body, e g a display apparatus, so as to prevent, or at least inhibit, unauthorised removal, e.g. theft, of the item.
It is known to display electrical items and the like in a retail outlet so that potential customers can view the items prior to making a purchase. In order to provide a more interactive retail outlet, it is known to permit the potential customer to experiment with the device and to use one or more functions of the device. In order to provide that facility, it is necessary for the device and for its buttons/screen etc to be accessible to the potential customer.
Unfortunately, due to the high value of such devices, they are often stolen or attempts are made to steal them, if they are simply handed to the potential customer for them to view Thus, a variety of devices have been proposed to address these problems.
A known proposal is disclosed in W020081009875 (Artform international Limited). This apparatus utilises a pair of jaw members which are urged towards each other to sandwich an electrical device (a mobile phone) therebetween and are held in that position by a security fastener. The device in W02008/009875 ultimately relies on a lockable cover to prevent a thief gaining access to the security fastener which holds the jaw members in position relative to each other. However, such a system is complex and expensive to manufacture, because the lock is an expensive component to acquire and complex to integrate into the apparatus. In addition, the jaw members only prevent movement of the electrical device in two dimensions.
Movement in the third direction is sought to be inhibited by an adhesive provided on a security plate,. which adheres to a rear surface of the mobile phone Although difficult, it is possible for a thief to overcome the friction provided by the adhesive Layer, which means that the phone could be shd from between the jaw members, if the jaw members are not sufficiently grasping the mobile phone Another disadvantage is that the adhesive used, in order to provide sufficient resistance to movement in the third dimension often spoils the rear surface of the mobile phone, because it can be virtually impossible to remove all of the adhesive, thus rendering the display phone damaged and hence unsaleable.
According to the present invention we provide an apparatus for holding an item relative to a fixed body, the apparatus including: a support member for supporting the item, the support member being connectable to the fixed body by a connection member; first and second holding members configured to receive and hold therebetween the item so as to inhibit and/or prevent movement of the device, first securing means for securing the first and second holding members to each and for preventing movement of the holding members away from each other; a first cover member for covering the first securing means; second securing means for securing the first cover member to the support; and a second cover member for covering the second securing means.
According to a second aspect of the invention we provide a system for displaying an item including:-an apparatus for holding an item re'ative to a fixed body, the apparatus including: a support member for supporting the item; first and second holding members configured to receive and hold therebetween the item so as to inhibit and/or prevent movement of the device; first securing means for securing the first and second holding members to each and for preventing movement of the holding members away from each other; a support device connectable to a fixed body; and a connection member connected at one end to the apparatus and at another end to the support device, wherein the system includes a coupling device for coupling the apparatus to the support device.
Further features of the first and second aspects of the invention are set out in the claims appended hereto.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which:-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the system and apparatus according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a further perspective view of the system and apparatus; Figure 3 is a yet further perspective view of the system and apparatus; Figure 4 is a side crosssectional view of the system and apparatus; Figure 5 is an exploded view of components parts of the apparatus and system; Figure 6 is a further exploded view of components parts of the apparatus and system: Figure 7 is a plan cross-section view of the apparatus; Figure is a plan view of the apparatus; Figure 9 is a perspective view of a second cover member of the apparatus; Figure 10 is a further perspective view of the second cover member of the apparatus; Figure 11 is a perspective view of a support device of the system: Figure 12 is a further perspective view of the support device of the system; Figure 13 is a rear perspective view of the apparatus wtth the first and second cover members thereof removed.
Figure 14 is a rear perspective view of the apparatus with thefl second cover members thereof removed.

Referring to the figures, these show an apparatus 10 for holding an electrical device, such as, for examples, a mobile phone, securely in relation to a display apparatus, so as to prevent, or at least inhibit, unauthorised removal, e.g. theft, of the mobile phone. Although in the following example the item being held is a mobile phone 90, it should be appreciated that the apparatus 10 could be utilised for holding any item, parficularly a high value item.
In the present embodiment, the apparatus 10 is shown as part of a system 100 for displaylng the mobile in a retail outlet so that potential customers can experiment with the mobile and use one or more functions thereof. The components parts of the system 100 will be described later.
The apparatus 10 includes a support member 12 which in this example is a substantially rectangular plate made, e g by pressing, from sheet metal The support member 10 has a flat portion to engage and support a rear surface of the phone and a number of upwardly extending hook-shaped members which are configured to assisting in preventing movement of the mobile phone relative to the support member 12. The support member 12, as will be described in more detail below, is connected to a fixed body by a connection member 50.
The apparatus 10 includes first and second holding members configured to receive and hold therebetween the mobile phone so as to inhibt and/or prevent movement of the mobile phone In this example the apparatus 10 includes one first' holding member 17 and three second' holding members 14, 15, 16. The holding members 14, 15, 16 are connected to one lateral side of the support member 10 and are spaced from each other and shaped so as to permit access to buttons/controls of the mobile phone In this example the holding members 14, 15, 16 are integial with the support member 12, but they could be separate component parts which are fixed by fasteners or any other appropriate means to the support member 12.
The holding member 17 is positioned substantially midway along the opposite lateral side of the support member 12 and is positioned substantially opposite the holding member 15. Again, the holding member 17 is positioned/shaped so as to permit a user to access the mobile phones buttons on that side. The holding member 17 is substantially S-shaped and includes a rearwardly extending projection 17a which extends through an aperture 12b in the support device 12. The projection 17a includes a laterally extending aperture 17c.
Although in the present example the apparatus 10 includes three holding members on one lateral side and one holding member on the other lateral side it should be appreciated that any number/combination of holding members can be provided, eg. one, two or three on each side, Connected to a rearwardly facing surface of the support member 12 is a part 13 which is C-shaped in side view and includes a pair of laterally extending apertures 13a in a substantially upwardly extending wall thereof The apertures 13a are aligned with the apertures 17c in the member 17 A pair of security fasteners 11 are provided, each of which extends through the aligned apertures 1 7c, 1 3a such that when tightened the fasteners 11 urge the member 17 towards the members 14) 15 16 The fasteners 11 thus prevents movement of the holding members 14, 15, 16, 17 away from each other The apparatus 10 also includes a pair of blocking members 18, 19 which are configured to further inhibit and/or prevent movement of the mobile phone The blocking members 18, 19 are each upwardly extending members which in this example are connected to the support member 12 One blocking member 18 is positioned midway along an upper side of the support member 12 and the other bbcking member 19 is positioned midway along a lower side of the support member 12 It will be appreciated that fewer or more blocking members could be utihsed. The blocking members 18, 19 beneficially prevent movement of the mobile phone in a direction generally upwardly and away from a user. Although not so configured in this example, the blocking members 18, 19 could be separate components parts fixed to the support member 12, and may be adjusted so as to change their positioning relaUve to the support member 12. This would permit longer/shorter mobile phones to be accommodated. The blocking members 18, 19 could each also be positioned lateral to one side of the support member 12.
The apparatus 10 beneficially includes a number of security measures which are aimed at preventing or at least inhibiting a theft from stealing the phone whilst it is displayed in the retail outlet The apparatus 10 therefore includes a first cover member 20 which is configured to cover the security fasteners I 7c so that the security fasteners are concealed and cannot be accessed by an unauthorised person. in this example the first cover member 20 has a generally cylindncal part 21, which abuts a rear surface of the support member 12 and a generally conical part 22 which extends reaiwardly away from the cylindrical part 21. The cover member 20 is substantially symmetrical about its axis and is hollow thus providing a recess to receive the part 13 and the security fasteners 17c. The first cover member 20 also includes an axially aligned aperture 26 to receive a connection member 50.
The cover member 20 is secured to the support member 12 by a pair of fasteners 24. The fasteners 24 pass through diametrically opposed countersunk apertures 25 in the cover 20 and engage in threaded apertures 27 provided in the upwardly and downwardly facing surfaces of the part 13 The screws 24 prevent or at least inhibit unauthorised persons from removing the cover member 20, which means that the unauthorised person will have difficulty in locating/accessing the security fasteners 1 7c.
The apparatus 10 also includes a further, second, cover member 30 which is configured to cover the security fasteners 24 so that the security fasteners 24 are concealed and cannot be seen. Only authorised persons would know that security fasteners were concealed and thus a theft would not know to remove the second cover 30 to locate the fasteners 24.
In this example the second cover member 30 is an annular ring which is configured to slide over the cover 20 and towards the rear surface of the support member 12 until it abuts that surface, such that the first cover member is received in the central aperture in the second cover member 30. The first 20 and second 30 cover members are therefore positioned substantially coaxially with each other The cover member 30 is thick enough, from front to back, such that it completely conceals the fasteners 24 from view It could alternatively) be thinner, however, so as to at least partially conceal the fasteners 24.
The second cover member 30 frictionally engages the outer surface of the first cover member 20 by means of a fnctional member which in this example is a resiliently flexible member such as an 0-ring 32. The 0-ring 32 in received in an axially facing recess 33 in the second cover member 30. The friction provided by the 0-ring 32 ensures that the second cover member 32 remains in position, abutting the rear surface of the support member 12.
As mentioned above, the apparatus 10 is part of a system 100 for displaying the mobile phone at a retail outlet. The support member 10 is therefore connected to one end of an elongate flexible connection member 50 by way of a fastener 52 which is threadedly engaged with an end 53 of the connection member 50 and sandwiches therebetween a part 12a of the support member 12. An opposite end of the connection member 50 is connected by any appropriate means to a support device 60. This connection may be provided with biasing means so as to bias the connection member 50 towards the support device 60, although that is not essential The connection member 50 in this example is flexible, which is preferable as it permits a user to more comfortable and less restrictively hold the mobile phone/apparatus 10.
However, it is not essential for the connection member 50 to be flexible -for example, it could be a rigid rod or the like.
The connection member 50 is hollow thus providing a passage for a power supply cable to the mobile phone. Again, this is a preferred feature, and thus not essential for the apparatus 10 and system 100 to satisfactorily.
The support device 60 is configured to support the apparatus 10, and thus the mobile phone, when it ls not being held by a person. The support device 60 is substantially cylindrical and is connected to a fixed body in a retail outlet In the present example it is connected to a shelf 61 and is inclined at an angle to an upper surface of the shelf 61 The support device 60 has a stopped recess 62 shaped to receive both the first 20 and second 30 cover members of the apparatus 10.
The system 100 also includes a coupling device 65 for coupling the apparatus to the support device 60, so as to hcld the apparatus 10 relative to the support device 10 when the mobile phone is not being held by a person. The coupling device 65 is configured to permit decoupling and recoupling of the apparatus 10 and support device 60 from/to each other. To provide this capability the coupling device 65 includes a number of magnetic/magnetisable members 66, 67 provided on the apparatus 10 and on the support device 60.
The members are each magnets, but it should be appreciated that one of the members 66, 67 could be magnets and the other a magnetisable material.
There are four magnetic members 66 providedn recesses on the rearwardly facing surface of the second cover member 30, positioned 90° from each other about the axis of the second cover member 30 Four magneUc members 67 are provided on the support device 60, again positioned in recesses in the support device 60. The members 67 are also positioned 90° from each other about an axis of the support device 60. The members 66, 67 are positioned such that they are aligned with each other when the apparatus 10, and thus the mobile phone, is in a display position i e a position which is generally upright and faces the customer. The members 66, 67 attract to each other when they are positioned sufficiently close to each other. Although in the present example four members 66 and four members 67 are provided, it should be appreciated that fewer or more could be utilised. in fact, only one member 66 and one member 67 could be utilised. As an alternative, one or each of the members 66, 67 could be provided as a continuous member which extends around a periphery of the support device 60 or second cover member In order to assist in orienting the apparatus 10 in the display position relative to the support device 80, the system includes a location device. The second cover member 30 includes a peripheral location recess 38 which receives a corresponding location projection 68 provided on the support device 60. The projection 68 is positioned in a portion of the stepped recess 62 which receives the second cover member 30. The projection 68 and recess 38 act as a location device so that the potential customer is inclined to return the apparatus 10 correctly to the support device 60 when they have finished viewing/interacting with the mobile phone. If the apparatus 10 is not correctly position, the members 66, 67 may not be close enough together to attract each other, and thus the apparatus 10 will not be held close to/abutting the supportdevice6o.
It should be appreciated that as an alternative the projection 68 could he provided on the cover member 30 and the recess 38 in the support device 60.
When used in this specification and claims, the terms t'compnses" and comprising" and variations thereof mean that the specified features, steps or integers are included. The terms are not to be interpreted to exclude the presence of other features, steps or components.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description, or the following claims, or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a nsa fr performing the disdosed b4n*p or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, as appropdite, may, separately, or In any qonbhiaflon of such fSt*es be uthisod IS' taking the bwention in diverse thereof.
