Description
Adaptor This invention relates to adaptors. More particularly, this invention relates to adaptors for connecting a first fluid carrying article to a second fluid carrying article.
Embodiments of the invention relate to an adaptor for connecting an insertion part of a fluid carrying article to a further fluid carrying article.
When connecting plumbing apparatus, it is often necessary to provide an adaptor for connecting an insertion portion of a first item of plumbing equipment to a second item of plumbing equipment by means of an externally threaded part on the second piece of plumbing equipment, and an internally threaded nut.
According to one aspect of this invention, there is provided an adaptor for facilitating connection of a first fluid carrying article to a second fluid carrying article, the adaptor comprising: a first sealing member for sealing against a first fastener on the first fluid carrying article; a second sealing member for sealing against a second fastener, the first and second fasteners being co-operable with each other to urge the first and second sealing members towards each other and to secure the first and second fasteners to each other.
A securing portion may be engageable with the second article. The securing portion may be deformable into sealing engagement with the second article when the first and second sealing members are urged towards each other; wherein the first sealing member comprises a first cylindrical inner surface having opposite ends, and the first sealing member further includes a first frustoconical annular face. The first frustoconical face may taper from an inner free edge thereof to an outer edge thereof, the inner free edge constituting one of the ends of the first cylindrical inner surface.
The second sealing member may comprise a main portion. A cylindrical end portion may be provided on the main portion.
The second sealing member may have a second cylindrical inner surface having opposite ends. The second sealing member may include a second frustoconical annular face, which may taper from an inner edge thereof to an outer edge thereof.
The second frustoconical annular face may be provided on the main portion. The annular cylindrical portion may be provided on the inner edge of the second frustoconical member.
The annular cylindrical portion may be co-operable with an internal region of the second fastener to effect sealing of the second sealing member on the second fastener.
The securing portion may comprise an annular frustoconical portion, which may extend between the first and second sealing members. The securing portion may taper inwardly from the first sealing member to the second sealing member.
When the first and second sealing members are urged towards each other, the first sealing member may pass over the securing portion.
The securing portion may be provided on the first or second sealing member.
Preferably, the securing portion is integral with the first or second sealing member.
In one embodiment, the first and second sealing members and the securing portion may be formed as a one piece unit. The securing portion may have first and second opposite ends at which the securing portion is connected respectively to the first and second sealing members.
The first sealing member may be formed as a radially outwardly extending first flange at the distal end of the securing portion. The second sealing member may be formed as a radially outwardly extending second flange at the second end of the securing portion.
A line of weakness may extend between the securing portion and the first or second sealing member.
The line of weakness may allow the second sealing member and the securing portion to detach themselves from each other when the first and second sealing members are urged towards each other by the first and second fastening members.
The annular cylindrical portion may be an end portion, and may be of a substantially constant inner diameter.
The annular cylindrical portion may be of a substantially constant outer diameter.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of an adaptor; Figure 2 is a front view of the adaptor shown in figure 1; Figure 3 is a view along the lines Ill-Ill in figure 2; Figure 4 is a side view of the adaptor shown in figure 1; and Figure 5 is a sectional side view showing the adaptor in use.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown an adaptor 10 for connecting a first fluid carrying article, for example an on/off valve 102 for a radiator, to a second fluid carrying article, for example, a radiator flow control valve 104, only a portion of which is shown.
An example of a suitable on/off valve is described in published UK patent application No. GB2457754.
As shown in Figure 5, the flow control valve comprises a first fastener 107 having an outer threaded member 108, comprising an external thread 109A and an inner surface 109B, with a frustoconical portion 109C. A second fastener in the form of a nut 106, having an internal thread 106A, is provided. The nut 106 defines an aperture 110 through which an insertion element 112 on the on/off valve 102 can extend. The nut 106 can be screwed onto the external thread 109A of the outer threaded member 108.
The adaptor 10 comprises a first sealing member 12, which can engage the frustoconical portion 109C of the inner surface 109B on the flow control valve 104.
The adaptor also has a second sealing member 14, which can engage the inside of the nut 106.
Referring to Figures 1 to 4, the first sealing member 12 comprises a first annular frustoconical outer face 16.
The first frustoconical outer face 16 has an inner free edge 18A and an outer free edge 18B. The first sealing member 12 also has a first cylindrical inner surface 20 extending between opposite ends.
One of the opposite ends of the first cylindrical inner surface 20 is the inner free edge 1 8A. The other of the opposite ends is a line of weakness 22 between the first and second sealing members 12, 14, as shown in Figure 3, and explained in more detail below.
The second sealing member 14 comprises a main portion 24 having a second frustoconical annular surface 26. The second sealing member 14 has an annular cylindrical end portion 28 on the main portion 24.
The annular cylindrical end portion 28 terminates in a planar free end face 30 perpendicular to the main axis A-A of the adaptor 10, and has an outer diameter that is substantially constant from the main portion 24 to the free end face 30.
The second sealing member 14 further includes a securing portion 32, which extends from the main portion 24 to the first sealing member 12.
The securing portion 32 has a frustoconical configuration and tapers inwardly from the first sealing member 12 to the second sealing member 14. The line of weakness 22 extends between the securing portion 32 and the second sealing member 14.
The second sealing member 14 has a second cylindrical inner surface 34 extending between opposite ends. One of the opposite ends of the second cylindrical inner surface 34 is the planar free end face 30. The other of the opposite ends is the line of weakness 22.
Figure 5 shows the adaptor 10 in use. The nut 106 has a frustoconical inner face 114. The nut 106 is arranged on the insertion element 112 of the on/off valve 102.
The adaptor 10 is also arranged on the insertion element 112 of the on/off valve 102, such that the second frustoconical annular surface 26 engages the frustoconical inner face 114, and the second cylindrical end portion 28 is received in the aperture between the nut 106 and the insertion element 112.
The insertion element 112 is inserted into the second fastener 106 on the flow control valve 104, and the nut 106 is threadably received on the external thread 109A on the first fastener 107. In this position, the first sealing member 12 engages the first fastener 107, such that the first frustoconical outer face 16 engages frustoconical portion 1 09C of the inner surface 1 09B of the second fastener 107.
As the nut 106 is tightened onto the first fastener 107, the first and second sealing members 12, 14 are urged towards each other. This urging of the first and second sealing members 12, 14 detaches the second sealing member 14 from the securing portion 32 at the line of weakness 22.
The second sealing member 14 is then urged over the securing portion 32, thereby deforming the securing portion 32 into sealing engagement with the insertion element 112 on the on/off valve 102. This secures the securing portion 32 to the insertion member on the on/off valve, and thereby connects the on/off valve 102 to the flow control valve 104.
There is thus described an embodiment of an adaptor for securing a flow control valve to an on/off valve, having an insertion portion, where the fasteners to connect the two articles to each other are of a different size.
