Abstract

A blank of stiff but foldable board material for forming a packaging carton. A strip (1) includes first and second end panels (2, 3) for forming flaps in the finished carton which overlap each other. The end panels are defined by transverse fold lines (4, 5), arranged in sequence in the direction of the strip, and each have a width greater than half that of the strip (1), the widths being unequal. The end panels are folded together and against the strip. A side part (8) of the first panel (2) is attached to a first side region (6) of the strip and an opposite side part (9) of the second panel (3) is attached to a second side region (7) of the strip opposite the first side region (6).

Description

FOLDABLE BLANK FOR A CARTON
Background to the Invention
[0001] This invention relates to a blank of stiff but foldable board material for forming a packaging carton and to a carton formed from the blank.
[0002] US-A-4,589,552 describes a package comprising a strip of corrugated cardboard to be wrapped around objects placed on its inside surface. An end panel of the strip, which is cut in line with a transverse fold, is divided into two flaps by a median longitudinal slit. The panel may be folded over the inside surface of the strip and fastened to side bands thereof. The flaps may then be folded around an object to be packaged and the strip can be wrapped around the object and glued to itself.
[00031 A disadvantage of this package is that when the object is in place the flaps do not meet. A central part of the object is not protected by the flaps and this part is larger for thicker objects.
Summary of the Invention
[00041 The present invention provides a blank of stiff but foldable board material for forming a packaging carton, the blank comprising a strip including first and second end panels defined by transverse fold lines and arranged in sequence in the direction of the strip, the panels each having a width greater than half that of the strip, the widths of the panels being unequal, the end panels being folded together and against the strip, a side part of the first panel being attached to a first side region of the strip and a side part of the second panel remote from said side part of the first panel being attached to a second side region of the strip opposite the first side region.
[00051 The end panels form flaps in the finished carton which overlap each other, giving better protection for a packaged object.
[00061 One of the first and second end panels may have a width essentially equal to the difference between the width of the strip and the width of one of the side regions. One of the first and second end panels may have a width essentially equal to the width of the strip.
[0007] The transverse fold lines between the first end panel and the remainder of the strip and between the first and second end panels may comprise cuts other than at the attached side parts. Frangible bridge portions may be provided in the cuts for forming flaps from the end panels.
[00081 If the blank is formed from corrugated board material the flutes of the material may extend longitudinally of the strip, score lines being provided transversely of the strip to assist in the wrapping of the strip around an object and the end panels. Alternatively, the flutes may extend transversely across the strip, score lines being provided in the end panels in the longitudinal direction of the strip to assist in folding the end panels around an object.
[00091 Attachment of the end panels to the strip may be by gluing. In an embodiment of the invention, an end of the strip remote from the end panels bears an adhesive strip with removable release paper for adhering the strip to itself.
[00101 The invention also provides a carton formed from the blank defined above.
Brief Desciption of the Drawings [0011] The invention will now be described on more detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: [00121 Figure 1 is a plan of a blank according to an embodiment of the invention; [00131 Figures 2a to 2e show steps in the folding of the blank of Figure 1; and [00141 Figure 3 a plan of a blank according to an alternative embodiment.
Detailed Description of Particular Embodiments
[00151 Figure 1 shows a blank cut and creased from double-faced corrugated paperboard. In Figures 1 and 3, solid lines represent cuts while dashed lines represent score lines or creases. The blank is in the form of a generally rectangular strip 1 with a first end panel 2 and a second end panel 3. The flutes of the corrugated board run longitudinally of the strip. The end panels 2, 3 are defined by transverse fold/cut lines 4, 5 respectively.
[00161 Side regions 6, 7 on the web near the first fold/cut line 4 are in this example coated with PVA (polyvinyl acetate) glue. The cut parts of the fold/cut lines extend between, but not beside, side parts 8, 9 of the first and second end panels 2, 3 respectively. Frangible bridge portions 10 interrupt these cut parts.
[00171 The first end panel 2 has a width less than that of the strip 1. "Width" here refers to the dimension of the panel transverse to the strip 1. In particular, the first end panel 2 stops short of the side part 9 of the second end panel 3, which has a width equal to that of the strip 1.
[00181 The remainder of the strip 1 has several transverse score lines 11 in two groups, one adjacent the side regions 6, 7 and another further along the strip.
The free end of the strip 1 has a narrower part 12 bearing a transverse self-adhesive band 13 protected by a release paper.
[00191 Figure 2a is a perspective view of the blank of Figure 1, prior to the application of the PVA glue. Figure 2b shows this glue in the side regions 6, 7 and also shows how the end panels 2, 3 are folded together. Next, as shown in Figure 2c, the panels 2, 3 are folded against the strip 1. Side part 8 of first end panel 2 is adhered to first side region 6 and, due to the lesser width of first end panel 2, side part 9 of second end panel 3 is adhered to second sid region 7.
[00201 The blank then appears as shown in Figure 2d and in this condition it is supplied to a customer. The customer breaks or cuts the frangible bridge portions 10 and lifts the flaps so formed by the end panels 2, 3, as shown in Figure 2e. An object such as a book is placed on the strip between the flaps 2, 3 which are then folded over the object. As the flutes of the board material run through the flaps parallel to the strip 1, the flaps can be folded down at any point along their width taking account of objects of different thicknesses.
The folded flaps 2, 3 overlap and ensure that even the thickest object that the carton will hold is securely held.
[00211 The strip 1 is then wrapped around the object and the flaps 2, 3 by folding at e.g. two of the score lines 11, depending on the size of the objet.
The release paper is removed and the self-adhesive band 13 is adhered to the outside of the strip 1.
[0022] In its flat condition the blank of the invention is very compact. It also takes up the minimum of space when folded around an object.
[00231 The flaps folding up spaced from the edges of the strip create recessed buffered ends which protect the object against rough handling, such as being dropped through a letterbox.
[00241 Figure 3 shows an alternative blank in which the flutes of the corrugated board material run transverse to the strip 1'. The strip 1' does not require any transverse score lines as it can be folded transversely at any point along its length. However score lines 15 are provided in the end panels 2', 3' to allow their folding around objects of different thicknesses.
[00251 More than one object can be contained in a carton according to the invention.
