Abstract
A rotatable suction roller includes a main chamber divided into chamber sections by thin discs, a number of small holes in the roller outer surface and an a pair of tubes within the roller, coaxial with one another and with the outer surface, the inner tube being fixed relative to the roller and the flow tube (fig. 9) being a close rotating fit within the inner tube to allow different sets of holes in the inner and flow tubes to be lined up and hence selectively apply the low pressure to different ones of the chamber section to allow the roller to be used with different width of material, allowing chamber sections to be closed off when not required. The flow tube may be rotated by a selector gate and locked by a bolt. The roller may be used for feeding sheet material such as paper, foil and plastic film by the operator. This system minimises any wasted energy by only drawing air through the chamber sections along the roller length that are required for the width of material in use.

Field:
The invention would be used in the foowing industries: Packaging (food and general) Converting Laminating
Background of the Invention:
This invention relates to VAF (Variable Axial Flow) Vacuum roller. I was approached by a client, to produce a variation on an existing vacuum roller that allows various web lengths to be used. The VAF will allow the manufacturer to optimise vacuum efficiency and improve reliability of the vacuum source motor and fifter systems.
Statement of the Invention:
When a selector adjusts the internal parts, varied sections are either opened or closed to allow various lengths of film to be produced without wasting energy.
Advantages of the Invention: Compared with standard vacuum rollers the VAF saves energy and will increase the service ife of the suction pump and will be using only the absolute minimum energy required to produce films that are ess than the full width of the roller face. Another advantage with this system over a standard vacuum roller is that airborne particles are not pulled through the system via open areas on the roller face.
Introduction to drawings:
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings.
Fig 1.
Shows a standard vacuum ro'ler (half section view) with air flowing out of the main chamber (1) a'ong its full length, this means that the energy is wasted if a film is produced that is any length but the full width of the roller.
Fig 2.

When the s&ector cover sleeve (2) is positioned (as shown position 4) the holes in the guide flow tube (3) line up with holes in the inner tube (Fig 6) aUowing air to pass through on'y the chamber sections required for the current operation of the roUer.

Description
Like a conventional vacuum roller (Fig 1) the invention allows air to be sucked through small holes on the roller main body. This chamber area is partitioned off on the VAF roller by means of thin discs (Fig 6/6a) that are pre-positioned to suit the customer requirements and fixed in position by welding to the inner tube. The vacuum flow can be Page 3 thrected by the means of a rotatable flow tube (Ag 9) made from a non stick material (RT.F.E) which is encbsed within a smooth bored inner tube (Fig 6) thus aowing a dose sliding fit between flow tube and inner tube. The flow tube has 1 open end and I end dosed off by means off a plug (Fig 2/7) that is attached to a guide pin (Fig 9/5). A series of holes are drilled along the flow tube length, these correspond with holes dril'ed in the inner tube to line up or close off ports as required by selection. This is governed by a selector gate (Fig 414a), which can be engaged via a selector cover sleeve (Fig 3/2) and guide pin (Fig 915). When rotated and locked into position by a bolt (Fig 3/6) the vacuum flow can be altered from a single chamber to mufti chambers a'ong its ength. Air is puUed through the system via a vacuum pump, and a flexib'e hose connected to a rotatable coupling attached to the open end of VAF vacuum ro'ler as a conventional vacuum ro'ler.
